I just drew up a quick concept of what we may like in the site: (url="http://"http://www.mlanier.f2s.com/evd/")http://www.mlanier.f2s.com/evd/(/url)
That could just be a frame at the top of the main page.

Is this what you're talking about (url="http://"http://www.ub2k.com")www.ub2k.com(/url) ?

Yup
heh, if I were you guys I'd keep a LONG way from anything that involves PERL and flatfile databases.
In my experiance the best combination is PHP4 and MySQL. If you want somewhere to host this check out (url="http://"http://www.phphosting.com/")http://www.phphosting.com/(/url) and (url="http://"http://www.tera-byte.com/")http://www.tera-byte.com/(/url)
As for the language, PHP is very PERL like, except for one very important exception: it's an embeded HTML language. That means that it basically is placed in an HTML page, rather than being a seperate stand-alone program. It also benefits for faster execution and a more stable enviroment.
As for the scripts, there is vbulletin (http://www.vbulletin.com/) which is basically UBB for PHP/MySQL, w-agora (http://w-agora.araxe.fr/) which can do just about everything imaginable, from discussion to news to file transfer and phorm (http://www.phorum.org/) which is the discussion board I use at (url="http://"http://www.evp.f2s.com/boards/")http://www.evp.f2s.com/boards/(/url) There is also a in-progress script at (url="http://"http://sithweb.sourceforge.net/")http://sithweb.sourceforge.net/(/url) which aims to power such sites. It's written by me, and it is on a tempory development hault while I concentrate on my 6th form qualifications at school (bleh)

w-agora seems impressive, amajor upside would be that it seems to be free.

The only problem is we have someone on the team who knows PERL, although none of use know MySQL or PHP. :frown:

If you know PERL you'll pick up PHP very quickly, just read the manual. SQL is not easy though, especially when you need to know the difference between such things as left and right joins...
For a quick tutorial look around the the PHP Resource Index, (url="http://"http://php.resourceindex.com/")http://php.resourceindex.com/(/url)

Unfortunatly I dont. Micah's our hard core coder.
I' might consider trying to learn it, but I'd need to free up some time. Maybe when I finsh that infernal site(not evdev.net, a differnet one).
I've decided to learn PHP. That site you posted blackhole is very usefull, now maybe we'll be able to get a really good webboard for the site.
I began learning PHP (Very nice language) on Friday, two days ago with PHP Essentials by Julie Meloni. With that, came some basic MySQL stuff too :). It's got everything nice about Perl, without many other good things.
Oh yeh, another thing. Can I join the team? I was away from the boards for a while when this thread started and I'm too lazy to scroll back through hundreds of posts to find the info
Anyway, I already have some of the groundwork for such a script.

Is that like a book you buy in a shop or is it downloadable?

It's a physical book that you buy.
heh
I'd love to help put I have no Perl/SQL/PHP/anything skills.
Good Luck, I'll probably use the site once it comes out.

How much does it cost, I think I might actually read a book, I want to find out how to use DreamWeaver and UltraDev (when I get it) to it's full extent and maye flash too, I be interested in becoming a proper designer.

I don't have it with me right now, but I remember it being somewhere from $30-$40 (US Obviously).
Just set up another board. I've not really done much working with it so far, but the URL is (url="http://"http://www.mlanier.f2s.com/evd_board/pl/ikonboard.cgi")http://www.mlanier.f...l/ikonboard.cgi(/url)
Um, yeah, we should finalise a colour scheme etc.
