I just came up with a new challenge: What can you accomplish in EVO one-handed?
To take part, pick a hand that you are going to play with, and put the other one somewhere out of the way. The main implication is that you can move OR fire OR switch weapons OR switch targets OR autopilot, but only one of them at a time.
The best I've managed is (just) taking out a Voinian Cruiser using a Zidara equipped with Neutron Turrets and a phased beam. It's very difficult - what can you manage?

Actually, if I can stretch out a little I can both move and fire primary weapons at the same time.
I'll try this when I'm home w/ the family mac...interesting challenge you got here.

The main challenge is having enough dexterity in your pinkie finger to navigate the ship while firing. I actually tried it once, but my pinkie wasn't good enough, so I kept running into things. I think it would have been much easier if I were left handed so I could have used my pinkie to fire instead of my thumb.

That's a very interesting proposition, though Monty Python is still an option with one hand (get into firing position, take your hand off the controls and just fire).
If I don't use it though, I think I might even change my strategy in terms of what kinds of weapons I'd use -- rockets and other hard-hitting secondaries might work well in this kind of situation.

I'm curious, do most people fire their secondaries with their right or left hand? I mean, normally.

Well, in EVO 1.0.2, that would be a lot more boring -- since the ships keep stopping every now and then, you'd have to switch to the controls every couple seconds. I guess it would work eventually, but you couldn't fire continuously and so it would take a lot longer and leave you vulnerable to new ships coming into the system.

Left. My right hand is reserved for only controlling the ship, which is necessary since I'm a lot more of a finesse pilot in general and need the extra control. Besides I don't use secondary weapons as often as I should so having my left hand control (almost -- any letter key I'd normally type with my right hand I still use my right hand for) everything else is not that big a deal.

Looks like Mazca was thinking a bit too hard about the Igazra while playing...

That's one of the funniest things I've seen somebody post in a while.

Hmm, about that -- I've never noticed that huge of a difference in the new AI's ability to deal with Monty Python, it just seemed like they were a little more sensitive to it, though it was still possible to execute fairly easily enough. I just had more trouble running away from Kraits when there were more of them than my shuttle could handle.
But I guess what you're saying's right -- it's just an inconvenience, not an impossibility.
And forge...that was hilarious.

All you'd really need to do is switch the keys around so you can reach everything you need with one hand. I use eight to 15 keys(depends on species and which mouse I'm using) with my left hand when playing AvP, and I don't think you need that many for combat in EVO. I know I don't. Target, fire, three for steering, change secondary, fire secondary... shoulden't be a problem.
Of course, I think Mazca had the default setup in mind.

Been there, done that. A few years ago I beat the whole Voinian, Miranu, and Azdgari strings one-handed. I was bored, and there wasn't much outside the comp I could do with my right arm in a cast for 6 weeks.
Normally, I've got my right hand on the arrow keys, left thumb on the space bar(primaries), pointer on the R(closest target), middle on the W(change secondaries), ring on the tab(sift targets), and my pinkie on the shift(secondaries). Well, when I'm fighting atleast.
If I switch out to use E-D-S-F for my maneuver keys, I can fight one handed with very little impediment. Without switching keyboard layouts, suffice it to say I can press both shift keys at once.

Interesting, I use my ring finger for W; I don't press tab very often in combat while firing secondaries, as I generally prefer to have a target before shooting them (well, I suppose rocket-type weapons would be okay...).
When I use my afterburner, I tend to use it for short periods of time and while concentrating on maneuvering, so I think I actually use my index finger for that.
Mrrf. Well, I generally don't use an afterburner. If I'm flying anything, it's an armour-plated bitch with guns bursting from every oriface. Neutron turrets, hunter missiles, SADs/SAEs, all the fun stuff. I generally eschew fighters in favor of more ammo or defense. So, afterburner is not my highest priority. Also sometimes I'll want to engage a closer ship with unguided weapons and one that's farther away with missiles or turrets, so being able to select is helpful.
I have the "control" key as weapon selector...it's closer to the shift button. Makes more sense.
