merits of EVO vs. EV

Based on the comments of numerous people on the EVO board, it appears that most of the regular posters here like EVO quite a bit more than EV. Without starting a war between supporters of EV and supporters of EVO, I would like to know why you like EVO more. Please be specific, e.g. don't say that EVO has a better storyline without saying what elements of the EVO storyline you like better.

I will be starting a similar topic for people who like EV more on the EV board.

Thanks in advance for sharing your opinions.

I like EVO better mainly because of the bigger universe and more storylines/races.

Well, I don't prefer EVO's scenario over that of EV's, or vice versa. What I do like is the larger universe to explore, as well as the greater amount of missions, which really helps the replayability factor. The engine is also a bit more advanced. One area where Override has a clear advantage is AI skill. Now granted EVO's AI is relatively weak, but EV's AI is as dumb as a doornail. I can be taking on 4 or 5 different Confed ships in a lesser but somewhat faster ship, and as I fly by a Frigate all it does is sit there in one place shooting at me with turrets (regardless of whether I can really be hit), making no effort to pursue me. The Alien Cruiser is beatable in EV because of the relatively dumb AI. If it and its fighters were operating under Override's AI, I think the battle would be considerably tougher, especially under 1.0.2's conditions.

That's pretty much why I tend to like Override more.....but only by a bit. I still appreciate EV a lot, especially with EVGE running. 😉

I find the plot and ships of EV to be more fun, but the EVO engine is better.

I gasp actually prefer EV, but EV:O is a close second-

1- Two words- Frozen Heart
2- The diversity and realism of ships
3- The diversity and realistic properties of weapons
4- The larger galaxy

I like the bigger universe of EVO as well, and I've always thought the ships were mainly better - it took a long time to get into anything that you could really see and believe as a ship in EV, and when you did there wasn't much left to do - I never played it with any plug-ins though, so I can't speak for them :).

I don't like the way that EVO leaves so much unexplained and unfinished for plug-ins to be made, but I guess that's the nature of the game, and I doubt EVN will be much different in that respect.

I like the bigger range of choices in EVO, ie. UE / Voinian and Azdgari / Igadzra / Zidagar, not to mention Renegades.

I do think the EV galaxy was friendlier though - I always liked getting hailed to help other ships with delivery missions, but that rarely happens in EVO, which makes that big universe a pretty lonely place!

Personally, I downloaded EV:O, and have never returned to EV.
Well, okay, I did, but ONCE just to hear the awesome theme song- EV:O's little flutes sound like crap on my laptop.

While, at first, I scoffed at the graphics of EVO, once I began to actually play it, I noticed the detail is much higher than that of EV. The massive universe, too, is fun to play. I doubt I have more than one pilot file that has EVERY single planet explored.

The storylines offer a huge diversity, which has already been said, that allows me to play the game many times over, and still manage to be surprised at every twist and turn. The increased AI actually makes the game difficult, to a point, to play.

But the main reason I love EV:O so much more is the large number of ships one can fly, and the limitless outfits you can equip. Quite simply, no two ships will EVER be the same. Instead ov EV's missles and torpedoes, you get needle misiles, pursuit missiles, hunter missiles, heavy rockets...

Yes, Override has more outfits, but if you want to get your favorite stuff, you have to go around the huge universe and get maybe two things from this culture, another from these guys, a couple from them.. this takes time, and everyone has to like you.

Override leaves many questions and cliffhangers and doesn't satisfactorily explain anything exept the hard core stuff, like "This button makes your ship go forward, this makes it turn. Now shut up and guess at what this over here means."

The UE are obviously the good guys, you don't hear people say "Well, the UE are realy evil, and the Voinians are good," like with EV you hear, with some reasonable arguments, "Well, the Rebels are realy evil, and the Confeds are good."

None of the ships match up. There are about three million EVO ship classes, like this is a Crescent Lazira, it has no counterpart with the Miranu, UE, or Voinians. And look, the UE have four zillion trade ships, the Voinians have one, the Miranu have two, and the Strands have none. Huh?

The bigger universe isn't always a good thing, and a lot of it is boring and uninhabited.

I don't know... EVO just gave me a bad feeling. it's fun, but not as much as EV.

Please, no more multiple posts -- it's officially considered spam, and you may be karmaslapped for it. We got your point in the first post. 😉

On topic: EVO is just plain bigger, in terms of universe, missions, ships, outfits, everything everyone has mentioned already. However, from all I've heard (though I haven't played EV much myself), the game balance isn't as good as in EV. 🤷 I can't say for myself, but that's what they tell me ...

I dont think that this question can be answered with hard facts. You cant really judge these two because one is the predecessor. For one thing, EV was an amazing game, especially since there were none like it, it was the original. EVO is the sequel so of course there will be improvements, but EVO wouldnt be here if it wasnt for EV. So to bring this to a close, they're both good in their respects, but are unjudgeble. But if they came out at the same time, i'd buy one, and steal the other.

I like EVO's engine (AI and other features) over EV.
If you like EV's storyline, but like EVO's featureset,
and feel like playing around in ResEdit, it's possible
to port EV to EVO... Give most of the ships the
"use afterburners if advanced" flag after tossing in
the new template and file type, and EV becomes much more challenging.

As far as base storylines go, I am a sucker for a wider variety
of outfits, ships, etc...so EVO has my vote.

However, there are some TCs which are quite good for both.

Hecter's going to hunt you down.

Interesting, though, that most sequals, be it movies, or computer games, are WORSE than the predecessor(SP?) Personlly, prefer EV:O, simply for the larger size. The engine's more or less the same, so most things should be easy to port.

As to the comments that it's too hard to find different outfits, due to the large universe. I saw tough...but some fuel tanks. Searching for new, fancy outfits is part of the game.
