I have been playing evo for over....hmmm.....about two years now (I think) and I have not concieved what the self distruct button does. When I press it it starts counting down and then it stops. Is this actually a usefull thing?! Please help!

If you actually want to die than you have to hold the button down. If you don't, it will count down to zero and then abort.

The self-destruct is for when you wish to have a clean record and don't want to go out in a blaze of glory.

Or for when you realize that you just jettisoned the UE ambassidor to Emalghia and don't want to go back and tell them about it.

Well, you just have to hold it down when it hits zero.
What is it good for? Scaring the crud out of your little brother when he is playing. Do it enough times, that he thinks it doesn't work, then hold it down. "MOMMY! MY UNITED EARTH CRUISER JUST GOT BLEWED UP BY Censored(my name)!!!"

Hehe I once accidently self destructed and forgot that I didn't have an escape pod... And I was playing strict... that sucked
------------------ Arrrrrrr, matey!!!!
I generally don't use the self destruct.
I think in the original EV I did it by accident once. I wasn't playing strict, but if I remember correctly I'd just captured a Confed Cruiser in something like a shuttlecraft (a R.Cruiser and C.Cruiser disabled each other, and I got pickings!)
That definately wasn't fun...

Hmm, I had the same situation in EV recently, except that my shuttlecraft didn't capture either the R Cruiser or the C Cruiser, but I became ultimate immediately, and somewhat hated by both sides - which made the pilot no fun and he got deleted :)!

Thanks for the help seems like a...um... usefull tool > That is if you wish to be blwon to smitheriens.
Yes, one would have to say it has very little obvious strategical use :)!
Once, one of my friends was playing on my computer, and he asked how to jettison his cargo. My response "Command D" boy that was entertaining, he didn't hold it down of course, but still fun.

Ah! Another control that I've never seen reason to use - why would you ever want to jettison stuff exactly? Usually it will have you fail a mission - but I can't envisage a situation where jettisoning is easier / better!

I for instance had a renegade mission and was paraniod that the UE would scan my ship. They can't of course but I was new and didn't know it. So I jettisoned and got rid of the cargo, aborting the mission. And sometimes you just need the space.

The reason was that he had gotten the first Artemis group mission in original EV, and was tired of getting it over and over, so he took the mission, left the planet and jettisoned the dude into space.
Hm, too bad you can't see a little guy waving around with his hand screaming for help....
Yes, good call :)! That would make the feature far more useful for simple entertainment value.
