EV for the...um...PC (duck)

Before you start screaming at me for the message subject :), I've gone through and looked at some earlier posts about EV/EVO for the PC. There was some talk about emulators ( part of my question ) and the usual Windows user flaming =P.

First of all, someone wrote that you can find emulators for "apple but not for windows" I haven't had any luck finding an emulator for my PC to do a virtual mac interface. I have a 75 mhz Mac and believe me its not fun when you got a UE destroyer with all of its blaze cannons and turrets facing you and firing, the game gets so slow its hard to do anything and my ship usually gets torched unless I'm cheating ( rare :))

And its been like 6 months since anyone I can find posted something like this, again I post the same question posted many times in the past =P "Is EV/EVO/EV3 coming out for the PC at ALL? Any ports?"

Thanks, and yes Microsoft wants to steal your dog, your house, your possesions, your life savings, your cat, AND your donkey.

------------------

NO. EV or any of it's cousins will NEVER come out for the PC, man.

Think. Ambroisa only makes games for the MAC....

75 mhz?? I feel for ya.. Is it a Performa???

Very funny, now beam down my clothes. These ladies look rest-less..... uh-oh...

go to (url="http://"http://hammerand.virtualave.net/ev/install/pcee.html")http://hammerand.vir...stall/pcee.html(/url) for a 51 point instruction set for how to run EV on a PC

Why don't you just get the new $800 iMacs?
Or maybe a G4 Cube? πŸ˜‰

There are a number of mac emulators for the PC, the one most often recommended is 'Executor' from
www.ardi.com

I assume you have adjusted the game speed to the maximum and tried the 'double speed' (frame dropping) option. the only other suggestion (other than a new CPU πŸ™‚ ) I can offer is to turn off virtual memory if you have it on - assuming that you have enough RAM to run the game without VM.

I have played EV and EVO on a 33MHz Mac and did not have any major problems related to game speed, with EVO it was annoying that things moved so slowly, though. If your ship is regularly getting torched in combat it may not be the game speed that is causing your problems, since everything is slowed down, not just your ship.

No and no.

Good luck.

Wait a sec... a 75MHz computer?????

I have a 66Mhz, and I love EV/O, I'm not compaining!!

There's a EVO checklist on the page I gave you, you have to backtrack though..

download the DisableSmokeTrials plugin (http://www.AmbrosiaS...lay=date&page=1 and scroll down) and than turn smoke trials off (in prefs) if you already have smoke trials off... then... uhmm... you're a bad pilot! πŸ˜›

P.S. i have a U.E. Destroyer with 3 blaze cannons and 3 blaze turrets, and it doesn't slow me down to shoot them all at once, even with another U.E. Destroyer shooting on the screen it only slows down maybe 5 fps

------------------

Man, I have a 33mhz Mac, and that works!

100mhz is optimum speed for EV.

my friend played EV on a 25mhz LC3...it didnt work too well. maelstrom works good however...

------------------

Wow, lots of replies...well first of all..

1. Its a 7200 Alpha 75 mhz

2. I don't have smoke trails, this is EVO V 1.0.0

3. I already bought a new computer, which is a Pea Sea =P, 500 mhz, I don't want to get a Mac just for EV and a few other things, most of the stuff I can get is for the PC, granted Windows sucks and is a heckuva lot slower than the Mac OS is, and doubly hard to use, but face it guys, theres more out for it.

4. Thanks for the emulator link I'll go check it out

5. I'm not a bad pilot I took down a Confed cruiser with a lightning in EV original ( yeah I know the AI is moronic but it still has a lot of shield )

6. I'd rather not sacrifice the graphics for speed, I can put up with the slowdown but its hard adjusting from 500 to 75 mhz, trust me, the whole computer seems like its dragging in molasses after my PC.

7. I think I've heard of Executor but I think I came across it when I only had my Mac

8. I'll look at the 51 point instruction for running EV on the PC =p but what about EV edit and can plug-in's be moved e.g created on the Mac, transferred via disk and put in the EV directory on my PC if that works?

9. I shouldn't have gone to sleep after posting this with all the replies =P

10. My mac is obviously not going at 75 mhz and its quite old, I wouldn't be surprised if a 33 mhz/66 mhz mac could match or outperform it entirely, it's seen a lot of wear and tear and has a lot of junk running on it that I'm still wading through and trying to eliminate, I've only gone back to my mac recently

11. Maelstrom doesn't even compare to EV πŸ˜ƒ

12. After posting this I realized that maybe one of my plug-ins ( self created or not I don't know ) may have added more blaze cannons/turrets. I took out all the plug-ins to play a balanced game ( for once =D, believe me with some of the weapons I had in EV with a few seconds of continuous fire I blew up an asteroid, yes you can do that, but it takes a LOT of damage ) and the Destroyers and Carriers seemed to have a lot less firing.

13. Thanks for all the feedback πŸ˜ƒ

------------------

Ho boy, that's a lot of complicated steps =P, and I'm not proficient in the slightest with Dos, looks like back to the Dos handbook..sigh. Welp, off to get this installed and call Ambrosia for my EV reg code again, unless I can move the EV License in the preferences folder to the PC and have it work, is this possible? And what about the moving plug-ins part?
<edit>
AHHHH! What's EV 1.05f? (excuse ignorance, been away =P) It says EV 1.05f runs in double speed, well I cant do that heh , does the normal 1.05 not do that?
If they all do its back to the mac =(
By the way is there some file that EV makes that has my reg code in it?

(This message has been edited by AnaerobicShark (edited 08-03-2000).)

Ok how do you register Executor? I have a Name and Serial number for it, < don't ask me where I got it {smirk}, I think 150 bucks is a bit much =D> I'm trying EV now on it as I write this.

<edit>
Its really choppy, do I need to follow all the 51 steps? I just downloaded the .bin and extracted it with Stuffit Expander, and launched the game, but do I need to do all the stuff in Dos for it to run at the correct speed? Yes I've tried changing the Game Speed setting.

------------------

(This message has been edited by AnaerobicShark (edited 08-03-2000).)

I've tried it with both the Win32 version ( as win 98 specified operating system ) and the DOS version with ALL 51 steps, and it still skips frames regardless of the game speed setting. Anyone got any ideas, or is there a better emulator for this?

------------------

To my understanding there's 2 commercial Mac OS emulators. One of which your using (I
don't remember what the other is). I've heard that they both suck pretty equally though.
If your not interested in buying a new iMac (which is a great value at $800) then whynot
consider upgrading your mac? Maybe you could find a cheap upgrade card on ebay (like $50
or something)? If your using VM then maybe you should also check ebay for some cheap ram.
Just a few thoughts. On a side note if you bought your PC for the larger game selection maybe
next time you should buy a Nintendo or Playstation. Cheaper then PC's, less hastle then PC's
and more reliable. Then you could buy a mac for the rest of your computing needs ... okay
I'm done πŸ™‚ .

Wow, I hear all this 33 mhz and 75 mhz...

You are all really gonna hate me when I say I have a 350 mhz G4...

Your problem is because of the fact that emulation (excepting console emulation) is only good for business software (e.g. databases), not gaming.

Should be. Try it

If EV/O work, plug-ins should. Remember that large plug-ins require more memory allocated to EV.

"EV 1.05f" is probably the folder EV 1.05 is located in. All versions of EV and EV:O are capable of double speed ( the game omits every other frame) by pressing the 'CAPS LOCK' key. The registration info is contained in the 'Escape Velocity License' (or EVO License) file in the 'Preferences' folder in your System folder.

Ok here we go with a list again πŸ˜ƒ

1. My power mac is THE ONLY one in the 7200 series that cannot be upgraded in any way besides RAM

2. I don't want to spend 800 bucks for EV πŸ˜ƒ

3. I don't hate you for having 350 my PC is 500 πŸ˜ƒ

4. Yeah they'd cease to be mac-only they'd also stop going down deeper into the red on the books πŸ˜ƒ <sorry mac lovers =)>

5. Yes, I know its difficult to get the original proccesor speed and compatibility with an emulator, even with 500 mhz. Windoze sure doesn't help it.

6. You can't allocate memory with windows and the Get Info screen in executor isn't the same as the one on the Mac, no Preferred Memory, Min Memory, etc.

7. Can't be the folder, because EV 1.0.5 was a separate entry from EV 1.0.5f, I'm not THAT stupid to not know what the funky F means ( no idea how to write the symbol on a PC except using character map and I'm too lazy to look for it )
but it doesn't really seem to matter since 1.0.5 is skipping frames, double speed or not, even with game speed at lowest its still skippin'.

8. I'm not interested in buying an emulator, if you note my earlier post about....shall we say...FINDING the reg code for executor πŸ˜ƒ

9. Thanks πŸ˜ƒ

------------------

Btw speaking of that, is Executor a Name and S/N Shareware type of software like EV? Or do I need to send them that abysmal price of 150 bucks for something thats not so valuable? I could probably get a better mac comp off ebay for that. E.g the demo does not have all the features in it, you need another version, not just a key that unlocks some restricted features in demo version. Get what I mean? Heh I hate to pirate it but 150 dollars is just a plain rip off for hard to use software like that. It's not good at all even when not running apps, poor copy of the mac interface.

Is there a better emulator than Executor?
