Multi-lingual/translated plugs

Something struck me this very moment: there are only plug-ins in English (or American, depends on the "s" and "z" ). Are there any people out there who would like to have some in other languages? Because it could be very interesting, and could create lots of diversity I know it's a weird idea, but it could really be cool (at least for those who understand them). I, for example, speak English, French, Dutch and a little German. We could have plugs in one same language like we could have some in many different ones. We could have ones with translations ("Je ne suis pas du tout d'accord," said the foreigner. "Il est trop jeune." -- and then you have someone translating for you if necessary).

For those willing to discuss the issue, there will be this post and one on the web board (that's for people who wouldn't normally do the plugs themselves)
(if you think it's a really stupid idea, then just don't answer, and don't even bother reading this post anyway)

I know some people will think of translation devices, but that's a little lame I think. Come on, you've got to have different languages, otherwise it kills culture diversity.

So, comments?

And who here speaks different languages?

Note: I know it's pretty much the same thing written here as on the other topic, but who cares? This is for developers. (and mods of course if they want to answer ;))

Part of the dialogue and a lot of the terminology from mine is in ancient Egyptian...

That's a good start then. 😉

And how do put ancient egyptian into a dialogue?ż?

Edit: do you use the latin alphabet for it or do you somehow manage to use cyrillic in the game?

Vowels have to be interpolated from Coptic or other more recent languages....

There's a fine professor I know at UC Santa Barbara who has had some interesting side jobs: (url="http://"http://www.anth.ucsb.edu/faculty/stsmith/hollywood/index.html")http://www.anth.ucsb...wood/index.html(/url)

Regarding multi-lingual plugs, take a look at this topic: (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/webboard/Forum9/HTML/005510.html")singing the praises of {}(/url). If you write descs like this: {bxxx "This is English" "This is another language"}, then Nova will choose which text to display based on the state of the bxxx control bit. This would let the plug-writer control when a player is entitled to see which languages.

My own knowledge of foreign languages is fairly limited, but if a plug with a good story forced me to occassionally deal with the abilities and shortcomings of (url="http://"http://www.worldlingo.com/products_services/worldlingo_translator.html")WorldLingo(/url) or one of the other translation sites, I'd consider it a fun educational opportunity.

But you'd think people would be more inclined to play plugins in their own native language... This could easily be done with chärs, just choose your language, set a bit, and use the {bx "text" ""} idea.

SpacePirate: I fully agree. In fact, how many would like a plug in French? How many would like one in German? (or even Dutch for those Dutch and Flemish speakers. No, I will not tolerate a debate on the differences between Dutch and Flemish! ;))

Waw I've never écrit un message in zo veel talen It's trčs vreemd.

Anyway not to disturb the mods I will first do some translation.

I said that it would be nice if we created our own languages like Tolkien did for sporadic use , I for one would love to do this. 🙂

Actually guys, somebody did write a plugin that included English, French, Dutch and German, and followed it up with one with snippets of Turkish.

Ik ga dit niet allemaal vertalen - zij die niet weten zullen denken dat het vertaald is.

Je ne vais pas traduire ce que j'ai écrit en anglais. Mais tout le monde qui ne parle qu'une langue va penser que je l'ai traduit.

I must say that's impressive.
Hey, Martin, you're one of the first people I know of living in England who knows English AND French AND Dutch! Thumbs up! Especially since Dutch is considered either a condemned language (by many, mainly francophones in Belgium) or a small useless language.

So what would you think of a plug using a new invented language? 😉
And do you think a plug with language diversity is directly better?

If you are going to take the years it'll take to make a halfway decent language, I'm all for it. Otherwise, it'll be utter crap, a novelty.

A plug with random text thrown in could be a bad thing, or a good thing. If there are a few characters that speak french, leading to an all-french sidestring, that could be pretty cool, for those who understand the language. But if something critical is going to require a different language, forget it.

Hey, SP, of course you don't create the whole language in one go. But you start working at the sounds they use, the way they talk, , and then you start creating the words you need. You don't create the equivalent of a whole language. Just what you need. And anyway, if someone doesn't understand a language that much, you'll try to keep your wording easy and simple so that the person in front of you isn't totally lost.
On the other hand, it can't be made up to quickly otherwise it's really crap. That, I agree, is true.
It just requires a little time to find out who speaks the language, a little of their cultural history, and then the things mentioned above.
(oh, and, a language of Tolkien's level is pretty useless for a plug. At least, that's my opinion)

Meh. That'll teach me. Actually is seems we're indeed in the capital of the EU, Brussels, with obviously French and Dutch, but also the languages of the other members.

This has been one of the most educational posts I've read in a long time. And I realize that my French is quite rusty...

My favorite idea so far has been a small subplot that uses French, German or Spanish, and those who know how to speak the language can follow it. There ought to be enough with at least a basic knowledge of one of these three to give it some appeal. I know a bit of French, and I can stumble my way through German. And if you want to really drive everyone nuts, I'll help anyone who wants to write something in Middle English. 😄
