snd resources?

What's the easiest way to add snd resources? I don't just mean sound effects---let's say I wanted to make a certain planet play music when I landed.

Is there a way to convert an mp3, wav, or AIFF into a format that a mod can use?

(I'm trying to use Wiretap for this, if possible.)

Any decent audio program should be able to export snd resources, they are called "System 7 Sound"'s. Quicktime may even be able to do it itself.

Well, I can't find any way to do that in iTunes, Quicktime (not Pro), or Audacity.

What would you recommend?

So, when you stick sounds into EV:N, you have to use the system 7 format? Even if you're in os X? Cause whenever I tried to put in sounds, I pasted them into the resource and they never played in-game.

'System 7 Sound' just refers to a particular manner of packaging 'snd ' resources, which was introduced in System 7 and hasn't been supplanted - it's less common (and a bit less convenient) in Mac OS X, but not replaced. If your sounds are not playing, the problem may be that they're at the wrong sampling rate or something along those lines - I don't remember the exact numbers, but I believe EV Nova prefers its sounds in a specific form.

^I'll try it anyway.

I've been wondering about this myself.

I have (in OS 9) the following programs:

Peak 2.5
Peak 3
Cubase 4.1
Rebirth
Rebirth 2.5
Toast Audio Extractor

Surely one of these can turn WAV, AIFF and similar into snd files. I'll try Super 7 (through I've never heard of it referred as that before) if it doesn't work, I'll be getting in touch.

I assume it's the same story for intro music as well (EV/O only)

QuickTime Pro can do it easily, as can pre-3.0 versions of MoviePlayer.

SoundApp is awesome. You don't need to pay for it, either. 🙂

iTunes can convert to MP3, but nothing else. That's all the conversion it's capable of.

EDIT: Yes, if you can get WireTap's timing right (AppleScript, anyone?), it saves in AIFF format, which uses snd resources.

This also means that your worrying about AIFF -> System 7 Sound is pointless. 🙂

^Really. I thought I tried opening an .aiff in ResEdit and it didn't work.....I'll have to try again.

AppleScript couldn't do that. Honestly. I'm an expert.

iTunes can convert to MP3, AIFF, WAV, and, in recent versions, AAC (m4a). You choose the format in the Importing section of the Preferences dialog.

What? System 7 Sound is a method of packaging snd resources, but AIFF is a separate sound format. They both support uncompressed sound, but that's about all they have in common.
