What kind of editors and stuff do people still want?

What kind of utils and editors do people still want for any EV games? It's been a while since I've done a lot of EV stuff. I kinda feel like making a new util for EV/O/N.

Something I liked about EV-Edit with the other two games and that I miss having for Nova is having an editor that displays a map of the galaxy and allows you to visually edit the locations of the systems and hyperlinks between them. Nova-wise, I think everything else is covered by NovaTools.

This is what NovaMap(& Burst but I can't devote much time until after March) are for.

I'm actually quite fine with just NovaTools, Nova Map, and all the yummy w00tware utilities... although other things are useful too, such as Nova Target Generator, Nova File Changer, Nova BitMap (which is also a w00tware one, but less findable).

Hmm. Actually, I think my only request would be for a utility that doesn't start with "Nova":P

A revamp of NovaTools would be the one utility I'd love to see. Not because of anything wrong with it (it is the best EV plugin editor ever - wootWare did a great job), but because it runs in ResEdit. I think that anyone who uses Mac OS X will agree that ResEdit is one of the most crash-happy apps ever. ResEdit breaks when EVN is running, and its just slow. The best thing that could happen to EVN plugin-making is for NovaTools to be transformed into a standalone application. I'm wondering what the original reason it was created to be inside ResEdit was....anyone know?

I've been waiting forever for a non-buggy version of EV-Edit. Since my programming 'skills' suck, i need an ev-edit-ish program to make plugs. blah.

A stand-alone ship-editor might be nice, although not necessary. Visual map-editing is nice (yes, I know they're coming). Prehaps a utility that makes only paint-type outfit items. Select color (visually), price, tech-level, etc, and it generates the neccesary oütf resource.

The tools availible are really quite nice though, and I don't think it is all that important to make many more. The ones already in development should fill all the holes left.

Yeah, coordinates are pretty hard to do.

I want a full fleged EV/O/N editor that edits all three (at least EVC and EVO) kinda like EV-Edit but bug free.

This is from a EV-developer-newbie's point of view. Keep in mind that I'm not a newbie to EV, just developing for it. Therefore don't be so surprised if I'm mistaken or have the wrong impression about anything.

There seem to be so many different utilities and most of them seem to require ResEdit. Having abandond OS 9 completely, it is a great annoyance to boot into OS 9 or launch Classic just to use ResEdit. It'd be nice if there was just ONE app, with a simple UI where the user can just click, for example, on the "mission button" and it would tell you exactly what you need to do step by step. Maybe first it'll ask where would you like the mission to begin, and you click select system or systems from a map... and so on.

Keep in mind, I am NOT whining and I don't have that much time to really try all the utilities and figure them out. If anything I mentioned above is false, impossible or already done, then fine, no need to correct me because this is just my impression, I'm not saying they are 100% correct.

------------------

I like Nova Tools and all, but I would like a program similar to EV edit that allowed me to pick the resource by name in a drag-down bar, rather than by ID#. I also think the cooradinates are backwords or something.( I put y-150 x150 and the planet came in the upper right(i think, might have that backwords) which it is not sopposed to do. It should work like a coorodinate plane.)

I could live with nova tools if nobody made a novaEV edit thing, though.

Pleeeaaaaseeee!
(having troulbe animating ships)
Edit2: Anyone know how to use sprites? The Ev-tools app from wootware (?). Every time I try to convert a ship (or whatever) it asks for Nx and Ny, then crashes due to error: -108.
help?

Just a random point:
I use OS X exclusively, and ResEdit is fine for me.. having to use Classic for it is not particularly annoying because I need Classic for Strata to make my graphics anyway. ResEdit runs as fast as something very fast, never crashes, and does not break when Nova is open. So... not everyone with OS X agrees that ResEdit is evil 🙂

I agree someone should make an OS X friendly version of NovaTools, as it's annoying when ResEdit crashes about 25% of the time when I look in the oütf resource. ResEdit doesn't crash when you run EV: Nova, the whole Classic goes all purple (eh?) but that doesn't really matter as Nova takes about 1 minute to start up anyway.

I've only had one problem with Sprites: It doesn't like handling long animations (I don't know above what frame count, but it couldn't handle my 16 frame cycle-which becomes 576 frames. I just had to break the animation into two parts and render them separately, putting them together again later in Photoshop). Then again, I'm only running 9.1

The developer says that NovaTools has problems running in 9.2.

I've never had any problems with running ResEdit and Nova at the same time. Well that's not totally true. Once I forgot to close my plugin before starting Nova. If you do that, Nova won't load it. After that, I don't recall any problems...

There is actually one being made already. It will, however, be a while before it is finished - NovaTools was originally written in Pascal, and, as such, is difficult to port to any operating system envisaged later than 1990.

There are numorous things going on here. What I do when it asks for imput is to just click OK, because the presets are the ones that work the best.

Other then that, it depends on the app you're using. If you're using m2s, or p2s, just hit OK (if you haven't changed any prefs). EnRle works the same way.

You also need a certain amount of frames. 64 and 108 are the ones I stick by, but others will of course work.

I'd just like to say that I love EnRLE. It works great, and it is extremely useful. I have not explored many of the other NovaTools (besides the ResEdit NovaTools stuff) much yet..
