Hey guys, I'm returning to EVO after years off. I havn't owned a mac for a long time so the EV:O Nova plug is -amazing-!
My question is about my combat rating. I'm currently Dangerous, and I've been playing for a few days now killing every ship that I see and it hasn't gone up yet. I'm trying desperatly to get to deadly so I can take over a few planets >: ). Do I just need to keep at it? Or do only certain types of ships in certain systems count towards my rating? Or do I need to be doing something else like offensive missions or something?
Thanks in advance =D
EDIT: Also, does it matter if my escorts finish off the ship or if I make the killing blow?

Doesn't matter which system you are in, Combat Rating is based on number of kills, doesn't matter which kind of ship you take out. So if you take bar missions to kill renegades, your rating goes up as well as your status for the nearby planets. Go up north and kill a bunch of renegade CWs. Your Combat Rating will increase rapidly. Good luck.
Combat rating is based on the number of people you kill; not ships. I would suggest offing the Voinians, as they have the highest crew count, followed closely by the UE. Don't even bother with Crescent ships, as they are twice as powerful as conventional craft, and operate with half the manpower.

Yes, that's right. I didn't make that very clear.
Note that in EVN, your combat rating boost is based on a separate field from the crew count, thus allowing you to have e.g. weak ships with massive crews. The EVO plugin for EVN just maps the crew count to this field, though, so it should all work properly.
Used to be the first thing I did after getting a scoutship in EVO was try to gank a few kills on the UE/Voinian border to boost my combat rating.
Awesome, thanks for the help =D I'm not Ultimate lol.
I've got another question that I'll ask here before I start a new topic.. I'm concidered "Prime Evil" in the Azdgari system, and Public Enemy/Most Wanted on all the other Azdgari worlds.. If I kill enough Zidagar / Igadzra will I eventually be liked by the Azdgari again and be able to start their missions?
Yes, as long you haven't done the missions for either of the other strands (they're mutually exclusive).

Ok, thats good news.. I've been killing Zidagar for hours and my standing hasn't changed at all... Does it still count if my escorts get the killing blow? Also, does it matter what system I'm in? Do I need to be in or close to the systems that hate me? Or does any Zidagar kill help
Do note that the only Strand introductory mission that actually starts in the logical place (that being, inside the territory of the Strand in question), is that of the Zidagar. For the other two strands, being in good standing really isn't a requirement for initiation. That is not to say, however, that getting into the good graces of your intended employer is a bad idea. Destroying the other Strands' vessels, as well as plundering them, will make the one Strand very fond of you, and leave the others loathing you.
To inform you of where to find such missions without actually telling you outright I'll give you a few hints.
Spoiler
Look for a Zidagar outpost with Renegade problems.
One particularly paranoid Igadzra has taken interest into certain supposed aquatic delicacies on sale very far from his homeland
The Azdgari are practically born into the pilot's seat; when they lose their ship, they're certain to be in the market for a new one
If you still can't figure it out, consider where they won't be; the realms of the hated other Strands are illogical, and those of Humanity and the Voinians are highly unlikely. The Miranu and Strandless planets, however, are far more probable.

Dunno about the escorts, but you must be within at least two jumps of a system for them to care about the ships you destroy.
If you're having "legal difficulties" you could go buy a fake ID on one of the Renegade planets, that should help you if you've been murdering the people you want to team up with. Also, I'm quite sure (but not 100%) that if one of your escorts make the killing blow, you get nothing.
But the Fake ID Papers only work for UE space (and if you're playing the original, not the Nova port, it only clears the UE core-systems at that). Killing Renegades works for everybody (except the renegades), and is cheaper to boot.
Plundering also adds up brownie points I think.

The act of boarding does, in fact, affect legal standings, however, the theft of the crafts contents has no effect. The magnitude of response that you get from a given government depends on how much they 'hate' boarding (i.e. a government that loathes you boarding thier ships will kiss you for boarding an enemy ship. Same goes for destroying ships).

Yeah, that's what I meant to say, the act of boarding the ship can affect status.
If your escorts kill a ship, your combat rating goes up, at least in the EVN engine, and I can't test this easily now, but as far as I remember it was the same for EV/EVO. If you want to test, just start a new pilot get a bit of money, hire a couple cheap fighters, then tell them to attack an easy target. Your combat rating should go from harmless to mostly harmless.

You're correct. I play each and every game the same way: Before taking any missions I kill renegades to boost my rating and credits. Sometimes I'll capture a few escorts just to let them do my dirty work and for something different to do, and I notice my rating does go up.
Back in EVO proper the shots you fired after you'd destroyed a ship would raise your combat rating too. This was most noticeable with Freighters, which took a while to blow up - you could keep on shooting while they blew up and get up to above average or so from scratch in just a kill or two - a good way to start out, with -trader- ones, given that they don't shoot back :). I don't believe this is the case in the nova engine.
Edit: Woo, post 700 .. almost 7 years registered .. coincidence?
