Missles, what are they good for?

really now?

Ok, so after playing through just about all the Nova story lines, I decided to go and try Overide, since Ive heard good things about it.

Now, I'm looking at the missle selection, and we seem to have three choises. Hunter Missles, Rockets, and Needle missles.

Both Rockets and Hunter missles take up mass (2 tons each), and niether of them give much in performence to balance that out. Needle missles dont take mass, but not only is their damage piddly, but about 2 out of every 3 missles you fire will just spin uselessly about instead of impacting the target (never mind their suposed advanced targeting system).

am I missing something that makes missles worth having?

Obviously, you haven't explored much. There are a whole lot more missles than that, but I'l leave you to find them yourself.

Hunter missles are slow, but Voinian ships are slower. They do a fair amount of damage against armor. They are confused by sensor interference, but not easily jammed by ECM.

Needle Missles are fast and fast firing. Since the renegades developed them, they are designed for attacking 'soft' targets, like traders. They are not confused by interference, but can be jammed by ECM. If the government of your target has an inhernet ECM value, then your missles may veer off-course.

Rockets are Rockets. They're good against armor. The Voinians have a special type of rocket that can be fired from a 180° firing radius in the front.

Once you explore more, look for dispersal rockets-the best, in my opinion.

I never used hunter missiles much because of the mass of the launcher, apart from anything else, and the fact that most of my playing time was on a rather old machine and thus the firing rate was pitiful.

I have used the rockets on occasion for taking down Voinian ships in lesser craft, but they can be very hard to time, especially if your ship has decent speed.

Needle missiles used to be really good but I believe they suffered from the guidance changes in v1.0.2, which rendered other secondaries (which you will discover) pretty much useless and meant that needles have a tendency to spin around in circles more often.

Overall I've never been much of a secondaries man, except for Javelin Rockets in EVC ... and of course the Plasma Siphon :).

Rockets are in fact very useful, but you need good timing and a maneuverable ship to get the best use out of them. They hit hard, but are very hard to aim right.

Once you explore the galaxy more, you will encounter various other secondary weapons that are perhaps more worthwhile.

That's one of my favourite things about the Override galaxy - the weapons used by the different races are tailored to destroying ships of their own type (which conveniently also happens to be their enemies' type as well :)), and the division between heavy shielding and heavy armour really means that you have to equip yourself for the situation. This really isn't the case in EVC or EVN.

Mine too.

I like Hunter Missiles despite their cost and weight. They have good distance and come in handy at times. Follow everyone's advice... explore and you will find other upgrades for your ship. I never relied on the Needle Missiles. I prefer shields and turrets.

Hunter Missiles cannot be jammed. Period.

In depth analysis

Cool cool. Ive sort of come to the conclusion that missles in EVO are very specialized, and not as comon place as they are in Nova. Oh well, thats cool.

Now, on a side note, does anyone know why I cant put turrets on my Ardra, despite having more than enough free mass and no other turreted weapons (the statistics insist that the Ardra has max turrets of 2)

First, it's an Arada.

Second, for whatever reason, in EVO one turret takes up one turret slot plus one gun slot.

The reason is that the game would be unbalanced otherwise.

You speak as if that were not true in the Nova engine.

Having to use weapons designed for the Crescent galaxy may prove to be little of use when used in the war-torn region of the UE/Voinian war. Also, it's also inconvenient if you have to restock on ammos that you have to make a long journey. Now if you were to use rockets and hunters against Crescent ships, they too may prove to be little of use as well, but not so much as compared to energy weapons. This is because rockets and hunters do energy damage as well, but not at a great amount as energy weapons do, and the fact that shields are the first to be hit before armor makes Crescent ships more vunerable in situations when armor is all they have left for defense. So far the trade off on mass weapons are that they are slow inaccurate and they take up more space at very costly prices.

Rockets are great. I never liked Dispersal rockets myself, not that they're bad, but any time I'd get that close to a shielded enemy I'd use Defence Pods.

Specialized weapons are much better. The difference between hunters and rockets are quite large, while IR or Radar missles are just matters of personal preference.

I simply love rockets... although they seem to fly at funny angles if you use the graphics makeover that give EV:O a pseudo-3D appearance.

Otherwise, I find rockets easy to aim, and their long range and rapid flight is nice. Also, there are almost always opporuntities to top up your magazines. When fighting the Dreadnought, I dsiable every single one of its interceptors, and loot the rockets out of them. The Dreadnought really takes a hammering.
