EV3 16-bit Graphics

Hey, is MacOS 8.x required to view the 16-bit graphics that will be used in EV3? If no, what else is required to view them? Can they be viewed with a PPC-equipped computer with System 7.5.5? Thanks.

think on this... EV3 is likely at least 1 year from release. At that time (early August 2001), you'll be wondering if you can run it on a six yearr old system. Now Ambrosia is great for older machine support, but you will likely be a lot happier doing one of two things:

  1. Upgrade your machine if you can afford it. I mean it. Don't just go buying accelerator cards and what not. Go buy a $500 iMac; if pricing continues to drop as it has been, iMacs will be right around the $500 mark this time next year. $500 is NOT a lot of money.

  2. At least find a copy of MacOS 8.6. Really. Drop in some RAM to bring yourself up to at least 92MB and then upgrade to MacOS 8.6 Everything will be happier.

I would recommend going with Mac OS X. It's Unix based, you know.

Uh. You can't run Mac OS X without a G3/G4 processor and be CERTAIN it will work. You can run it on some other Macs, but you are 'not supposed to'.

And it's not 'Unix' based =p

Mikee's right. Mac OS X is based on NextStep, a technology Apple acquired a few years ago.

MacOS X shares its Mach Kernel and a lot of NeXT-ish features, but Darwin is completely Unix based. There's FreeBSD under that eyecandy UI, boys. Internet Explorer froze on you? Hit the terminal and kill -9 it. Muhahaha 😉

I do pray that Apple is going to make sure that everything defaults to off... otherwise we're going to see an explosion of open, exploitable ports when MacOS X actually ships. (Doot de doo... I'm Joe User, and I'll leave my telnet port wide open and not change my root password! I like to run as SuperUser because I'm a 733+ D00D and all 733+ H@X0R$ always login as r00t)

What's Unix? I have heard of Linux.... but never of 'Unix'.
