I dug waaaay into the old posts until my fingers were raw and bleeding, but did not find any comprehensive trade route topic.
Soooo, what commodities should I buy/sell, and where?

Buy Some Salian Brandy from salia, go to freeport, andthen sell it. You'll make a bundle.
The best route of all time is Thehir to Gribn in the Hatuli system. Use Miranu Heavy Frieghters and you rake in almost .5 mill. per run.

What you do is get 60 million credits. Then you hire 6 miranu H. Freighters. Then you do whatever you want, because you have 60 million credits.

I want a doughnut. A Doughnut as doughnutty as a doughnut made of flour, water, one large egg, sugar, a pinch of yeast, cinnamon to taste, and jam or jelly filling, depending on preference. Its not a doughnut as something in any way metaphorical. Just a doughnut.

I have to agree with that Gribn and thehir route. The Saalian Brandy route isn't worth it because Freeport is renegade and you have to bribe them more and more, taking a chunk out of the profits... But the Thehir/Gribn route has roughly the same problem.. Renegades just loooove hanging out there...

Get a UE Destroyer, Disable a bunch of Miran Heavy Freighters, take them over, then buy one of yourself. Make the Saalia/Freeport shipment. You'll make more than 5 mil per run - that should pretty easily cover the bribe for the pirates. And you can kill Kraits and Helians, and outrun Turncoats (pretty amazing that one of those things can outrun anything)
But what am i saying, trading sucks! You can make more money plundering pirates in South Tip. If you're just tring to make money, here's a tip:
Step 1: get a defend planet mission in south Tip Step 2: wait until everyone arrives, then abort the mission Step 3: let the renegades kill all the milita guys(and if they start to lose, just kill the militia guys! - you make it up to the planets later by disableing/boarding/eventually killing the renegades) Step 4: disable and board all of the remaining renegades Step 5: if you killed any militia guys, make sure to blow up all of the renegades and not just leave them drifting in space to even out you're record.
you'll get a lot more than the 200,000 credits the planet pays you! And it's faster than running back and forth between Saalia and Freeport, and not as boring.

Hmmmmmm, that would even it out...
But now I totally agree!! Trading only makes te same amount of profit as raiding but it's not nearly as fun!! My favorite trick is to go to the Gribn and Thehir system {Forgot it's name} And just keep landing and taking off, disabling all the renegade ships in the process. Make some money, and people love you for it!!!
You're right of course, commodity trading is VERY boring. However, I don't really have the option to plunder ships when I start a new game, because I have little money and a mere shuttlecraft.
But once I DO reach my goal of 12 million, then I can purchase a crescent warship, beef it up, and dominate some planets.
I always practice piracy on the renegades.

Just get your ass up to Centauri and land on First...Centauri. Buy food, then go to Liat. Land and sell the food, buy fertilisers. Get your ass back to Centauri and sell it there. Repeat, get lots of freighter escorts, repeat...
After a while you get money, get a better ship and make harder runs. Tip: I posted a topic a time ago...lots of good trading routes there, you should check it out.

A lot of people say that the best trading route includes a run to Pax station in the Dogovor system to pick up crassworms. They're nutritious and they taste okay too! You can do this in a shuttle with fuel tanks, but you really ought to wait until you have a scoutship or a transporter. Nice and fast! Do not engage the Voinians or they will reduce you to cosmic particles.
The monks at Omm pay top dollar for crassworms, which they use in some top-secret pharmaceutical manufacturing process. Buy medical goods and head back the way you came, but stop off at Telnan in the Ariane system. Medical goods are always in demand here.
If the monks at Omm are on strike, prices soar. Fly empty to Telnan, or fly to Huron instead.
Once at Telnan, sell the medical stuff and buy equipment (at medium price, but still worth it) and take it back to Pax.
Rinse and repeat, and rinse and repeat, and rinse and repeat as required. With a full set of captured or hired freighters, you can rake in millions in minutes.
