Maybe it is a glitch?
Everythings fine. You have the "Awarness"-Skill, so you don't need the scroll and you don't need to fight against him. Forget this quest

Mary is quite useless at this point...Thanks for the reply though.
I had already decided to forget about the quest and am on to bigger and better targets!
