HOW HARD IS IT TO MAKE A PLUGIN?

HOW HARD IS IT TO MAKE A PLUGIN? DOES IT INVOLVE A LOT OF TIME?

oh yah the caps, sorry i forgot!

Well, IMO, plug-ins are divided into 6 basic parts:

•Missions
•Stuff Besides Missions
•Resource Patching
•Graphics
•Publicity/Web Stuff
•Testing

The basic stuff besides missions can be accomplished very quickly with just some patience. I find missions to be very annoying when you make a lot of them. I just dislike the time it takes to make every resource and do all the math. When you're making a large plug, and you need to replace a bunch of objects, it can get annoying too. Especially making system replacements that involve systems with mission bits and certain parameters that you want to include. The graphics really just depend upon what software you're using. It's preferable that you know HTML or have an editor so you can design a good info source for your plug-in. The testing is only hard with a huge plug like F-25. In F-25 there's a link in southern Kytaarii space that allows you to jump about 8 jumps to another destination. Overrall, plug-in development is only hard if you've got a huge plug.

Well, it depends on what you want in it -- a basic plug (a coupla missions + outfits) wont take too long - probably something like 3 hours.
Having said that, A-Radar took a lot longer, and that didnt have any missions or outfits in V1.0.0
Something like Revenge took me weeks or longer to do. But that was integrating it with the existing universe.

In answer to the question, it takes as long as you want it to. Something like FH takes ages but that's an overkill 😉

Simple plugs -- a few hours tops.

Micah L - you don't have to do the math. EV Formula Calc does it all for you.

It isn't that hard to make a plugin - unless you are the kind of person who wants to do it the hard way and only use ResEdit. To make a simple plugin, (2-3 ships, outfits, maybe a planet) takes about 15 minutes to 2 hours.

Get your hands on EV-edit, it makes it SO much easier.

coconuts?"

I guess I should express the fact that I think that EV-Edit is WAY too far overrated. It has a nasty habit of trashing plugs, and I personally get a much better feeling when using ResEdit. I hate doing missions through, so I use a modified data file with Schmelta-V to make 'em (until the bit limit gets hit (if ever)). I also prefer using the EV-Developer's map to place systems since it is definitelly much more stable than EVE. I wish I knew C though so I could make some completions to EEEVO. One of the other problems is that once you've used EV-Edit a certain amount of times, it takes forever to run through the countdown.

You can just trash the prefs.

I've been working on the preparation of my upcoming (not any time soon) plug-in, After Effects, and it's taking a sh*tload of time. I've been doing this for about 4 months total... PREPARATION!. Gathering artists (I finally got one that isn't going to boot camp), preparing a web page (that took most of my time), writing a good story (I'm not saying mine is good, it just required a lot of thought...), etc. Most of the programming is really tedious, even with EV-Edit. The fun part is the missions. My favorite thing to do is write the story and all the ship, weapon and outfit descriptions. It's a lot of work if you want to try and make a decent plug-in. If you're dedicated you should be fine...

It's quite easy once you get the hang of it. Just dig arround your data files with Ev-edit a litte before you start, to get used to the interface.
