it's not always a bad idea. Look at ID Software. They have released the source for Doom, Quake, and Quake II. They expect to release the source to Quake III before too long (once the new DOOM engine comes out). The license is written so that you cannot make money off the source, but it's free to use and learn and develop with. You just have to pay them a license fee if you want to SELL what you created.
It's a very good PR move for ID, and it gives potential licensees a chance to see what they would be licensing. It also lets hobbyists start with a strong code base when developing free games. Plus, they never give out the newest code, so their competitors cannot get a leg up by perusing their source.

Quite correct, it isn't always a bad idea. Look at Maelstrom for an example: Ported to Linux, an online high-score listing, and it's native under OS X now. In that case however it was a fairly old program which wasn't the big money-maker it had been in the past. Not to say it had outlived it's usefulness...but it sorta had.
Ferazel is still making money as far as I know, probably not as much as when it first came out (and probably not as much since you have to order the blasted CD, the reason why I never bought it) but as long as it's providing money then there's not really any reason for Spees to release the source code for it.
Another reason: ASW and Spees in particular aren't exactly the big money makers that ID is with it's large-scale productions such as the Doom and Quake games. Those are full commercial games which can provide large amounts of money via the licensing you described. I don't see that as a very viable option for a small company such as ASW when the source code is owned by the programmer himself. ID owns the source for it's games and can therefore license it all out to people while making money. For one person to do that and still expect to make money is asking just a bit too much in my opinion.

You're right. Every see an ambrosia game at you local store? Nope.

Much obliged for the agreement, Ice. As for having seen ASW products at local store I have seen Snapz Pro X at one of the Apple Stores. They were rather having some fun with it but weren't exactly selling it.
There is a reason for Ambrosia staying out of stores. That is a whole other league, you need packaging and a whole lot of other stuff. Ambrosia just cares about making a good game not all the other stuff. when EV3 comes out I hope they push it at the Apple store though.

I've heard rumors about Apple wanting to slap Snapz Pro X on new Macs, but I'm not sure about the source. Can't say I'd blame them though, it's far superior to Grab and anything else out there.
I, for the most part, am dead. Do not expect me to post anymore unless it is earthshaking Ambrosia news, and even then, only a couple times. I am wrapped up in the chaos of Sep. 11th, my dead tiger salamander, my moving to NC, my starting Middle School, and, most of all, (url="http://"http://www.bzcommunity.com")www.bzcommunity.com(/url) . The online LEGO Bionicle forum. I'm there under my old username. Come visit, maybe stay! It's a great forum if you like Bionicle. Bye. No more posts for me. Moderator, please terminate my account.

Re-reading your opening statement, I take offense to it. I am plenty regular. Currently there is not much happening you can't expect us to post everyday. I by the way, I post way more than Simone.

With the release of Dr. Tall Land and OBW, there will be more posts. We're not dead yet!
------------------ The idea that an all-knowing being created humanity is absurd, mostly because anyone with any intelligence could have done a much better job.
Okay. ONE more thing. When is OBW going to be released?
Originally posted by Globzilla: **Okay. ONE more thing. When is OBW going to be released?
I'm glad you asked that. We don't know. In a few months or so. I don't know. All I know is that it will not take it a year.
Originally posted by Ice: All I know is that it will not take it a year.
Can I quote you on that? Will you all get breast implants if you over shoot that target date? May I ask who is in charge of OBW? I know it is like communism, but who is/are the leader(s)?
Also, what is Extemporaneous? Chopped liver? You will note that unlike DrT and OBW, Extemporaneous was and is made by the person for the people. I have no secrets. Unlike those other more fascist level creators, Extemporaneous has something beautiful, to show for itself. OBW and DrT have no proof of anything. How do we even no they made something? They clutch their dwindling ideas close to their heart like the Gollum. Gollum... Gollum... Gollum...
Anyway. My forecast for the Ferazel community: *Extemporaneous X is released to the many raving fans, about 500. *Dr. Tall land is released, yet no fans scream for it. *OBW is released in partially completed form or when Aschaaf turns 45. *The Ferazel boards tumble into the realm of Avara. *Zelda and Spamguy visit only occasionally to insult those you remain. They become the Karzgul or Fallen Moderators. *Overrider still asks, "Where is Knight of Ni? Where did everyone go?" *MonsterLady remains but is constantly drunk on her Canadian Konkee, she makes drunken references to, "be'ng the... hiccup ... fasterst beta tester this side of BC... what's BC? It's bigger than $#@% Texas, damn newbies... hiccup..." *Merciless becomes the next Ben Spees, with all the baggage which comes with that. *Ice and Bob still say that OBW will rise again. *And the occasional newbie quickly decides to leave this elephant graveyard.
And what of Emperor Ent... After completing Extemporaneous Final, he pitches it as FW 2 to Ambrosia. He is then banned from the webboards for being "damn annoying." He manages to get a new IP and weasel in. Once comfortable weaseled in he becomes the last bastion of hope. What is that bastion? Why, Ferazel's Wand: The Odyssey, of course.

Ent - you hit the nail on the head .... hiccup.

500!? Some people download it, but never play it, I'll bet.
***Dr. Tall land is released, yet no fans scream for it.
Ah, but you are only half right.
***OBW is released in partially completed form or when Aschaaf turns 45.
Okay. Now that's stupid.
***The Ferazel boards tumble into the realm of Avara. *Zelda and Spamguy visit only occasionally to insult those you remain. They become the Karzgul or Fallen Moderators.
And soon all will perish, says the prophet, Ice.
***Overrider still asks, "Where is Knight of Ni? Where did everyone go?"
Just open thy eyes and will see him posting.

***Ice and Bob still say that OBW will rise again.
It will.

Posted by Ice: Ah, but you are only half right.
I don't know what you mean by that but I'm fairly sure you're not defending me.....
------------------ Dr. Tall says: Taller is Better (url="http://"http://drtalll.tripod.com")Dr Tall Land(/url)
As I always say, behind every jest there is truth. Humor is often a distortion of truth. But that truth is still a truth.
However, previous versions of Extemporaneous surpassed 500 hundred downloads. The current version has 365 downloads. 500 hundred was an exaggeration used to make a joke. I am sure Dr. Tall Land will get plenty of downloads. I will download it. I hope you will, too. OBW's projection date does seem, ah... far off, though. However, when OBW is released I will download it more than once. Oh, and I was once more than a member, I was a founder (of sorts). Think of you guys as the Avengers, me as Hulk. I was there in the beginning, contributed it a lot, but left to go stomp on buildings. Check your plot and title name. Yes, I am very proud of my contribution... of pessimism.
*The Ferazel boards tumble into the realm of Avara.
Well, personally I think Ares is in a similar situation itself, despite its many years of success. Hera was released with a general lack of outpouring support. It's inevitable, but consider that Avara gets a post every three or four days...the moderator there has only 50 posts on his total. We're a little quiet, but we're not going to become them.
*Zelda and Spamguy visit only occasionally to insult those you remain. They become the Karzgul or Fallen Moderators.
Is this your prediction or your analysis of the present? But hey, at least I get to keep the job title...
*Merciless becomes the next Ben Spees, with all the baggage which comes with that.
I think you may very well be right.
I'd pay to watch Merciless and you fistfight over who gets to grab our attention the most with a dazzling new game.
