I'm so ashamed!

Well . . . after 2+ months of trying to beat Xichra on my own, I finally broke down and downloaded FerazEdit! I have to admit that it was a much easier tool to use than I expected -- I am baffled by ResEdit, and I was expecting something along those lines. Anyway . . . even with 255 of ziridium seeds, health potions, and smite rings, it took me what felt like forever to kill this *%^#%! 😉 I used the ziridium seeds only until I got to the red background and then switched to smite rings -- thinking that it would be an easy, boring kill from there. I ran out of smite rings before even getting to that "gray" area where she talks that I have heard so much about!

I have to hand it to you Ambrosians . . . you make a pretty mean game! And I thought finishing Mars Rising was tough -- those Flamingo-lobsters are nothing compared to Xichra!

Good luck to all who have yet to come across Queen Xichra! 😛

That was the only thing that kept Ferazel from getting a perfect score in Inside Mac Games; it was "too difficult."

Welcome to the club, Nif! 😉 Ferazel Cheaters Not-so-anonymous?

You're more persistent than I. After about a week, I caved in. The good thing is that the shame does go away, however. Especially when you have a new addiction, er, game to occupy your time. 😉

If you think Ferazel is huge, try Jeff Vogel's Avernum! Of course, you have to like "old-school" D&D-ish; RPGs, but if you do, the game is beyond huge and quite well done.

Ack! Between Avernum, Deus Ex, and Baldur's Gate, how the heck am I supposed to get any work done???

Must...turn...off...computer.....

sigh

Gee..I've seen a game that looked somewhat like Avernum but much much better...now what was that called? Ohhh! EXILE 1!!!!!!! Yeah, that's it. 🙂

Sorry. Just venting.

Are you saying that Exile is better than Avernum?

Personally, I think Avernum is lacking that certain something that Exile had; putting aside the crude graphics and limitations of Exile. I prefer Exile to Avernum, though if I had to pay, I'd choose Avernum.

Hey...if graphics are your thing...then by all means...enjoy Avernum. But if you're interested in a game that actually challenges you and makes you THINK...try Exile I. I downloaded the Avernum demo...I'm so very unimpressed. The Nethergate engine treats you like you're an idiot.I'm sure I'd like the game if I hadn't played Exile I. This is a very poor replacement. Unless of course, graphics makes your heart beat faster. Ok, I'm done. I'm just annoyed that an Exile II Avernum type game is coming out next.I'll get over it.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, Zelda, but having played both, I must wholeheartedly disagree.

I honestly don't see how the Avernum/Nethergate engine treats the player like he/she is an idiot. The one thing that it doesn't do is make you guess at keywords to talk to people. Traditional, but very clumsy, IMO. Other than that, it appears to me that nearly all of Exile I is in Avernum.

Additionally, a bunch of quests and new things to do have been added, the automap is far superior, and the interface is so much more intuitive. There's a lot more new than just the graphics.

It is easy to boot up Avernum and immediately write it off and Exile in a prettier package, but that's not giving it a fair chance. Perhaps you haven't played Avernum long enough to appreciate the changes?

Puzzles are more obvious now, quests are easier. And I liked the old talking interface, you had to think about what to ask someone. One example of the easier puzzles is the gremlins in the clearing. I've been told by at least two characters already how to cheer up someone that's depressed. In the other version, I had to work a bit harder to solve that one. That's just one example.

I've played the demo all the way through. I never thought much of Nethergate, so this is part of my bias. Reading my last post over, I think I came down a bit hard on the game. As you said, it's all a matter of opinion. I loved the old series because the puzzles WERE so hard. But some people found that all to be very tedious. Perhaps the plot is smoother and moves along faster now. And the graphics were in sad need of a fix.

Enjoy playing it...but it's still not my thing, man! 🙂

Bizarre... I liked Nethergate but I don't like Avernum as much... besides, Exile's spells are better.

I was so unimpressed (was I?) with Avernum that I didn't even bother to seriously play through... perhaps I'll check it out again.

If you enjoyed the interface on Nethergate, you SHOULD try Avernum again.

I'm probably contradicting myself again, I know I said that I didn't think much of Nethergate, but I was comparing it to Exile. So I didn't think much of it in comparison to Exile, but I DID like the game. (Besides, I'd feel guilty bashing it overly much since I got the game for free!) And if I had never played Exile, I know I would have been completely hooked on Avernum. I still don't think Avernum compares to Exile 1, but then..I don't have to play it, huh? 🙂

Whatever I think about it, it must be making Vogel a pile of money because he's all eager to bring out a revamped Exile II next. :::sigh:::

Thank you for posting that . . . I could not remember who had done it! I hated having to use it, but thought it was great! Thanks for making it! 😄
