CD games aren't that great

In my opinion, CD games shoud not come from shareware companys. That is why I might not buy Ferazel's Wand. I liked it when Ambrosia only did shareware games.

But, if the full game were not on CD. it would be a huge download. Not everybody has an ethernet pipe. The CD format seems appropriate for a game of this size.

In addition to Ferazel's Wand being a huge download, don't forget that not everyone has lots of hard drive space. Having most of the files on the CD frees up space that can be used for other games.

Plus, I won't ever have to download Ambrosia games when I install a new Mac OS or want to try out a new game since everything Ambrosia makes is on the CD. In my opinion, that increases the value of Ferazel's Wand even more.

As a side note, I believe that the line between shareware and commericial is blurring as the quality of shareware increases. Would you say that the card games produced by Freeverse are any less then the card games produced by Sierra? I wouldn't yet Freeverse is a shareware company while Sierra is a commercial company. Frankly, I don't care whether the game comes on a CD or is downloadable as long as the game is worth my money.

Erica...I completely agree. I don't give a flying fig if the game is on a CD or not...just as long as it's fun. I think it would be a bit silly to NOT get a game merely because it wasn't available to you the way you think it should be.

Games are getting bigger and bigger. Graphics, music and whatever else just continue to grow and take up oodles of space. Ambrosia isn't the first shareware company to put a game on a CD. No way will it be the last. The times they do change! We gotta roll with it. 🙂

Are you implying that Ambrosia should limit themselves to shareware games? Come on, this discussion about CD games is really getting ridiculous. Ferazel's Wand comes on a CD and that's that. There is nothing you can do about it.

Shipping on CDs is the only way we can have large, complicated games like Ferazel's Wand. Asking Ambrosia to do 'only shareware' would mean they would:

  1. Make less money. A full return to 'Shareware' would cause them to make less money since crippleware games sell better.

  2. Be unable to develop games like Ferazel. Games like Ferazel simply REQUIRE CD shipping. It's too big to be shipped through internet, like other games traditionally. So, if Ambrosia can't ship Ferazel on CD, no one would never get it. OR, an even worse choise would be to FORCEFULLY LIMIT the game size. They'd screw half the graphics, part of the music etc. etc. unil it would become downloadable. We wouldn't like that, now would we?

As far as I can see, it's good for Ambrosia to ship games on CDs. It's also good for the customer (us), since now we can get better games from Ambrosia.

Lord Gwydion, perhaps you would like to share with us why you don't like CD games? You just say you don't like it, but I think it'd be good if we knew so we could argue with you more easilly.
