I was wondering something. How many people here often use strict play? Also do you have any humourous stories of when you were using it?
I only really made one serious strict play pilot. Dwayne Dibbley was his name. I built him up from his little shuttlecraft to a rebel Cruiser. Took me a long time, I wanted to truley play strict, so I didn't do the classic thing of quiting and restarting when things went bad, the alien mission was fun!
After completing the string, I fancied more of a challenge, took over some planets etc, then went into the minor strings. I did the mission where you travel to the system (can't remember name) in the top right hand corner, and fight that huge fleet of Kestrels. I was destroyed by the last one, one of those classic examples of the last missile being the straw that broke the camel, and ejected in my escape pod.
I resurected in Levo in a lovely new shuttlecraft, yay! thought I :). All of a sudden the red alert klaxon sounds, and a Kestrel bouty hunter appears, with its usual cheerful message!
As good a pilot as I am, a shuttle verses 2 lightnings and a Kestrel isnt much of a fight, not even my bank account of 20mil could save my pilot, who was promptly blown to hell! Talk about gutted!
Anyway, anyone else have such stories?

I loved that episode of Red Dwarf
The first time I ever tried to play strict I got killed on takoff by a pair of pirates. It was a looooong time before I tried again. By that time I was a whole lot better. I took off feeling confident and found myself sitting before a screen reading "<PN> has been killed" in only a few seconds.

When I first started playing, I always played strict play, and so when I got my first Clipper, I got 2 scout escorts ( big mistake ) I was attacked by 3 defenders and they blew me to bits.

sooooooooo good
As for me, I've never comleted any major mission strings in strict play. I'm much too impatient (ever get that feeling to take on a kestrel in a scoutship? )

Indeed.

Yes, but the feeling is quickly replaced with a strange burning sensation as I'm greeted by the buisness end of a Lightning...
I wouldn't last long enough in strict play. I be too busy getting blown up by a pirate kestrel. Then my nice little shuttle craft will be dust.

I'm not the only one! It didn't work so well when I transferred my pilot to a new computer without transferring the registration and 8 months later when I opened up the game for the first time Hector destroyed all my hard work, but that wasn't EVC.
I think my strangest EVC strict play story was when I decided I'd take down a Corvette with a Defender. I lost more Defenders then I could count before I got lucky and had help from another ship in the system. I think I might have successfully captured the Corvette, but I don't remember.

Which one? Duane Dibbley was in more than one episode.

The particular episode I'm thinking of is the one where the despair squid makes them think that they have been playing a virtual reality game. The cat turns into duane dibbly and has some really funny lines about that.
My favorite Duane Dibbley quote was from "Emohawks, Polymophs II":
"Just let me check: thermos, sandwiches, corn plasters, telephone money, dandruff brush, animal footprint chart, and one triple thick condom... you never know! " - Duane Dibbley, Emohawk

Actually, I do this quite often.
Upgrade the engines, buy 4 laser cannons and 2 javelin pods, monty the lightnings, and it's not really that hard. I usually pick off pirate kestrels by landing on the uninhabited planet in the pirate system NE of Spica, making quite a good profit and then moving onto a corvette
