I just played through Realm of Prey (great plug Tim) for the third time. The first two times, I played through with a Guild Terminator. This time I used an ADB Condor, followed by a Syndicate Guided Missile Destroyer when it became available.
I easily trotted through the missions untill I made it to the mission that you first encounter an Alien Comtaminator(the cruiser class). That mission was the one and only time I died.
I found the plug very well done, but find myself wondering: Could it be done in a fighter or a freighter?
I would like to challenge the EV community to attempt playing through Realm of Prey in a fighter or freighter of your choice. Please tell me of your results.

(babble) I'm currently quite aways into the Earth mission string (I just finished helping out the FMG for the first time (they said there'd be more related missions) in an Argosy, and unless some incredible nasties lurk in further missions, it is rather easyish. This is because of all the insane sheild and armour upgrades available (100 shipyard units of sheilding for 3 tons!!!) means any freighter can be kitted out into a powerful warship. Take the DREK secure freighter - 400 tons of cargo equates to 380 tons of weapons space plus enough cargo to do the mission string. Add that onto the expansion that came with the ship and it equals around 550 tons. Take off around 180 for sheild and armour upgrades - and you have a ship with around 200 units of sheilds and 1000 units of armour and still 370 tons of space for heavy weapons - and enough turret slots to create a kick-arse war machine. The only drawback is the cripplingly slow speed - which is why I chose the Argosy instead of the DREK freighter.
And neutron turrets kick arse :). Their range is much longer than most energy weapons, which means that I can just run rings around warships - and neutron turrets are fairly slow and innacurate, so as long as I'm a fair distance out I can dodge most of them because of my relatively high speed (350 after upgreades) - whilst I return fire to what is essentially a sitting duck. p.s: a shuttle's trade-in value is more than its initial cost - which makes a very easy way to make money

Wow, an argosy... A bold move there kiddo.
(babble) I probobly would have gone with that if I didn't have 36 million to blow. Then again, maybe not. I have incredible speed requirments (I'm not exectly the best pilot). If it can't do 450+ with afterburner, I cant fly it effectivly. Throw in the fact that I'm just not patient enough to strafe a warship for 20 minutes, and you get my choice of ships (a warship that floats like an azdara and stings like a dreadnought).
Through the game I used Scatter Turrets. They've a long range and a low impact, and when I compared them to other turrets in the plug, I found no equal. Maybe I read the files wrong, or maybe I'm biased. I always found the Scatter Turret to be the best weapon on the market. (/babble)

Well I've been doing fairly well so far in my argosy (apart from one niggle - a couple of missions expected me to demand tribute from stations with well over 1000 cruisers defending them. Maybe there's some way to get around this but I just 'tweaked' the defence values to make it beatable), but I'm now facing the mission with the alien mothership and I just can't defeat it in an argosy! I can just about take out the fighters, but its turrets have a ridiculously long range and I can't use my turrets (or that useless anti-alien gun - it does bugger all damage and has no range whatsoever) before I get decimated.
Any clues on how to defeat this thing?
(edit)I also had 6 kestrel escorts (you said nothing about using escorts ;)) but they did nothing before they were destroyed. blech, forget it. I hung around blackthorne raiding pirates until I had enough credits to hire 6 Terminators, and contrary to my expectations they made very short work of the mothership :). The final mission was a bit of an anticlimax though..
Anyone ever tried a perigrin? Once you've put a few upgrades on em their powerful enough to take on anything.
You know, i just thought of a way to beat the plug in a humble Shuttle. Get a cloak and both the mark 1 and mark 2 ramscoops. Just cloak while yer escorts (captured or otherwise) rip the opposition to peices...
Um, why would you WANT to fly anything slower than 450?
