Frogmarch?

I've noticed that in his plugs, Tim Isles makes use of the term "frogmarch." Here's what I found out about it:

(shift and alteration of “frog’s march” (not recorded in U.S.), as in 1871, 1873 quotations) Especially ‘police.’ to carry (a resisting person, such as a drunk or recalcitrant prisoner) face downward by the arms and legs; (hence now solely) to propel (a resisting person) forward, as by seizing his collar and the seat of his trousers or by pinioning his arms behind his back. (1871 in OED: “They did not give the defendant the frog’s march.”) 1873 ‘Slang Dictionary’ by Hotten: “Frog’s March,” the manner in which four or more policemen carry a drunken or turbulent man to the station-house. The victim is held face downwards, one constable being at each shoulder, while the others hold on above the knees. Often...another...officer... beats time...on the recalcitrant hero’s posteriors.) 1969 in OEDS: “He. . . took me by the collar and the seat of my pants and frogmarched me the length of the café.” 1992 Newsday (CNN-TV) (Dec. 9): “Tightly bound and frogmarched away.”

An article was written about it in the Washington Post: (url="http://"http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&node;=&contentId;=A25362-2003Sep30¬Found;=true")http://www.washingto...0&notFound=true(/url)

Anyone have any ideas on this?

I've used "frogmarch" many times in the past... what's so remarkable? Is it perhaps a British word that is uncommon in the US?

According to the article, it's currently "all the rage" in Washington. But it was used before in "Clear and Present Danger" and "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." The article does make clear that it is chiefly a British colloquialism.

Frogmarching is common enough in New Jersey...

Perhaps he is from the west coast. I have never heard of this term either. And I don't think I've seen "Clear and Present Danger", and don't recall that in the Harry Potter book. But, whatever.

I'm from Cali, and have spent a good deal of time in Texas and the Mid-West. I've never heard the term.

I never heard or read that word until 30 seconds ago when I read this topic.
