Ok, Kestrels ARE good.
I just found it out.
Here's the way to get more money than you can dream of, in almost no time!
Step 1. Gather 10 million credits, or capture a Kestrel.
Step 2. Sell your Lightings.
Step 3. Go to a system where you can hire Lightnings, and where there's no 'Interceptor' AI ships. (Confeds, for example, attack you even if you attack a ship with no govenrment.) I do this at Lethe.
Step 4. Hire a Lightning. Go a bit away from the system stellars, so you won't annoy anyone, and then hail the Lightning. Release it from servitude.
Step 5. Immediately start firing at it. Do it carefully, you don't want to kill it, just disable it. Board the ship to add it to your bay.
Step 6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 once, then proceed to step 7.
Step 7. Go to a planet where you can sell your outfit Lightnings. Sol is a good example, at least in GS. Sell your Lightnings.
This will net you 2.8 Millions in about five minutes, if you hire/kill in Lethe and sell at Earth. In an hour, you'll have 33.6 millions, and you can do pretty much anything you wish with it. Do this for the standard duration of an EV playing sequence, 7 hours, and you'll have 235.2 Millions, which is enough to practically buy the whole universe.
The only downside is that repeating a certain pattern for extended amounts of time can get boring. But who cares about boredom, when you have a chance to get rich. Rich! RICH!

As far as I know, you can't add a disabled Lightning to your bay unless you also disable another Kestrel and it's Lightnings, tow either the Kestrel to the Lightnings or vice-versa (so the Lightnings can go back into their home-bay), then board the Kestrel and steal the Lightnings (listed as ammo). Also, you can't have any ships in your own bay when you do grab the Lightnings, then you can recall your Lightnings to their bay. Of course, I just launch my Lightnings, capture the other Kestrel's Lightnings, then recall mine. This works with any ship with the appropriate bay (Rapier bay...). I just wish we could grab already disabled fighters to add to our "cache." At one time, I had eight Rapiers in a Rapier bay (got rid of the Lightnings and their bay) on my Kestrel. One BIG problem is when you've disabled more than one Kestrel and more than one fighter! You've got to match up the right fighter with its appropriate mothership.

Actually, you can capture disabled Lightnings as long as you have a bay, and it's empty.
You can add captured fighers to your bay until their max capacity is reached. You can add further fighters if you steal them as ammo from disabled carriers.
And again; OLD. No, really, it's nice to see people that still like this game so much. If I still had OS 9, I'd play it all day.

What I like to do is capture a few argosies or a bulk freighter. Then just start jumping from system to system in a Kestrel with an empty bay. You will be constantly attacked by small pirates (Defenders, Rapiers, and Lightnings). Destroy all but the lightnings which you disble (as I recall, 3 missiles does is this perfectly (except in GS)). Capture, sell, repeat.
Same as above, except no bar is required and everyone loves you for killing pirates (even though you lured the pirates into their system in the first place).
