Back in the days of the original EV pirates were probably the easiest thing to get. I have been able to disable Confed Frigates and Cruisers (lead them out of your range while you fire proton turrets), and I have also gotten Rebel Destroyers. Has anyone ever gotten a Rebel Cruiser?
What I find interesting is that the Rebels (though new compared to the Confederation Navy) has somewhat better armed ships. The C-Cruiser had 4 or 5 Patrol ships, missiles, I think turrets, and the neutron blaster while the R-Cruiser had 4 or 5 Mantas, torpedoes, missiles, and lots of turrets.

I have captured any ship i ever aimed to capture.
Confed Cruiser had 4 patrol ships in it's bay, some 15 torpedos, 4 proton turrets, and 4 neutron blasters.
Rebel Cruiser had 4 mantas in it's bay, 20 missiles, and 3 proton turrets.
sorry to disappoint you but the confeds are better armed. The rebels make up for that however, with much better speed and manuverablity.

But how can that be.......it has been that usually in my experiences that the Rebel Crusers won. Is it because that they targeted the patrol ships and then unleashed it's leftover weapons on the Confed cruiser?

Hmmm. I have only witnessed one occasion since playing EV for seven years where a Rebel cruiser defeated the Confed counterpart 1 on 1. It was a very lucky moment where the Mantas distracted most of the Confederation cruiser's fire away from the Rebel cruiser and in turn got pounded ferociously. And even then, the Rebel cruiser won the battle with all fighters lost and shields completely gone.
The AI for the cruisers does indeed take on the enemy fighters once they take fire from them. Usually whichever side succeeds in destroying the other government's fighters first gets the upper hand in destroying the cruiser-class warship (as logic would put it).

I've never seen a Confed Cruiser defeat a Rebel Cruiser. The Rebel Cruiser is too fast for the Confeds to target with their neutrons, and they can get out of proton distance fairly quickly.
Without cheating by changing crew numbers, I've caught all playable ships except Confed Cruiser. Just never really wanted to. I suppose If I did I could. Well, If I really wanted to, I'd cheat. Whatever.

I didn't even know that programmers put in cheats to their games that long ago---especially one so small (disk space storage).

As long as there were games, there were cheats.
I specifically meant editing the game using RES edit, a nice little editing utility.
I dunno, I've always enjoyed watching one-on-one capital ship battles, and I've both sides as the victor in different battles.
The Rebel Cruiser is certainly more maneuverable, but the AI doesn't take much advantage of it -- it usually will charge the Confed Cruiser and will often still be hit by a least a couple neutron bursts. Even without the neutrons, as long as a few torps hit them, the Rebels are toast with their vastly weaker shields (though as some people have pointed out, the fighters are always a factor, so that's why I've seen it both ways).
It's sometimes just as interesting between the Rebel Destroyer and Confed Frigate -- while the frigate usually wins, I've seen the Destroyer come away lucky because more of its torps hit, and I've even seen matches where both ships were disabled (fun for me to board!).

I used to have a full escort fleet of Rebel Cruisers. For 1 on 1 battles that I've seen it's about 50/50, but I haven't seen many of those. Most battles I've seen one side had more ships .

Imagine six escort Rebel Cruisers? It was a pretty awesome force. Seven if you include mine. Then there are the 28 mantas from the 7 bays. Needless to say it was an almost indestructible force. >

I can imagine that. 120 Missiles flying, so it is a insane rain of Missiles. And because gets half extra, 180. Not even the strongest ship can stand a constant stream of fast, reasonably powerful weapons. Not to think of 18 Proton Turrets. Their destructive ability is atleast equal to that of Heavy Fusion Beam, if not several. Even four is awesome force, able to rip Kestrels apart. And 28 Mantas... its not swarm or a squadron, its a system filler, near the max amount of ships. Could you submit that to the Pilot File Trade Network? I would like to try that out.

When you say "nearly indestructible force" do you mean that there have been battles where you lost some ships?

One time, I got a Confed Crusior with a Kestrel. It was the odds of like 2% but I did it. I had a whole lot oof fun with that Crusior.
