I mean, it's 10 Million.
With about a quarter of the price, you get the Rebel Destroyer, which wins a Kestrel any day.
I don't really get it about the Kestrels.. I've never used one, so I don't know, but..
They don't have that much shields or armor
They're as mobile as a flying brick
They're way too heavy for a ship that sleek (should be a 2-day jump ship IMO)
The stock Kestrel doesn't even have a threatening supply of secondaries. I mean, 4 torpedoes? What the...? That's not even enough to cripple an Argosy!
Those Lightnings are just a plain waste of money. And I bet half the price comes from those Lightnings.
There really should be a light Kestrel, which would be more of a Destroyer than an escort ship.. More secondaries, no Fighters, 200 tons mass, 5M price.
Is the Kestrel really worth the 10 Millions?

You have mocked the best civilian ship in EV! That makes me want to write a defense.
1. You have to start and finish the Rebel string to get the Rebel Destroyer. In the start of the game, you cant get it. If are in the middle in of the Rebel string, you cant get it. Do you know the Kestrel is the only ship in EV that got into Nova?
2. Yes they do. They have the most shields of civilian ships. You are making the mistake of comparing them to government ships, which are naturally much better.
3. So? Heavy warships arent supposed to be fast. Think Confed Frigate or Cruiser. If you need speed, get speed upgrades.
4. It is to balance. So the computer ships arent too dangerous to the player. So that the player doesnt get endless ammo for free but has to spend And yes, it is enough to disable to disable a Argosy. I have tried.
5. Oh really? How did they drop a Pirate Corvettes shields to 30% then?
6. But yes, having a version that costs half less and has more secondaries would be really attractive.
7. Many prefer the Corvette because of its speed. But it remains the most powerful ship you can get without sticking to either government. It is worth the money.

Ok, I see your points, but still. And if you do have access to military warships why stick with a civilian one?
You can survive easily the Fed or Rebel main string with a Corvette, or as I did, a Lighting.

Krestels are great because the have enough crew (twice as much) to make captureing a Destroyer possible. Its just too hard to disable enough destroyers to capture one when the second best ship has 1/3 the crew and is outmatched.

I've flown around in a Kestrel because It's pretty fun. Then you realize how much you got ripped off. It would be better if it came with more...stuff, It seems strange that such pricy ship would be short on starting things (minus Lightning bay) compared to others.

Kestrels suck!!!! They may be considered the most powerful civilian ship, but they suck!!! I mean it has 1/2 the sheilds of any other heavy ship around, it costs 2x and if you're not good at using bays, it sucks even more. Just go for the corvette in my opinion.

That comparison isn't fair. Yes, it is the most powerful civilian ship, but then you say it's the worst capital ship. No freaking kidding. It's a civilian ship. The governments are not going to let civilians have more powerful ships than them. It's common sense. It costs so much because it's an original design. The Rebel Destroyer is so cheap because it an upgraded Argosy. (By the way, the ship name Argosy was also used in Nova, as well as Lightning, Cruiser, Destroyer, Shuttle...) A freighter with decent (okay, excellent) speed and a #$&#

Yes. Probably he hates it so much he must prove its bad even with unfair comparisons. It does include two Ligthnings. And as I said earlier, I fought one and won without fighters, secondary weapons, or dodging. And that is indeed duh. Why would fighters be legendary for causing problems for warships otherwise? Getting swarmed by warships is even worse as it will kill you even faster with its power.
One cannot make comparisons to evaluate ships when one is played by a human. As we have seen in other threads a determined player can typically destroy any ship with any other ship. The field must be level.
To do this make a system with an average of 2 ships populated only by a düde of Rebels of ship A and an düde of Confeds of Ship B. Put yourself in any fast ship but give yourself a cloak and a dozen ram scoops. Then just sit and watch what happens. Land on the planet as many times as it takes to get the mix of ships you want. Repeat many times and take the average result.
You can vary it by adding different levels of static or asteroids. Or by adjusting the odds so you sometimes get 2:1 fights. You can also modify it so that ship A is a pirate and ship B is a brave trader. This way A will always attack B first.
Alternatively, to see fleets react create a mission where a group of Confeds enter a system filled with Rebels (ships E-H). Sit back and watch what happens. Set the goal to be observe and require and set no bits. Put it in the mission computer on all planets at 100%. Make as many of these as you like in the different permutations you wish to explore. Accept more than one and really watch the sparks fly (more for entertainment than useful data)!
All this requires is a basic understanding of ResEdit, the EV Bible, a notepad, and some time to watch.

Kestels are ok but really not worth it, my upgraded argosy (not rebel destroyer) with maxed out shields, 2 proton turrets, hawk bay with 2 fighter and and 13 missle with 2 missle rack took out a kestel with 3/4 health left in armor. The best thing to do is to capture a kestel instead of buying it. A good place to capture it is in the system of Darven i think it's called that with a space station called Blackthorne. And one question that i have that is not from the topic can anyone give me a website where i can download a emulator so i can play ev for pc?
