I mean... it came out like 7 years ago and Nova's out...
Oh well, nothing beats the original game if you ask me... it's just old and I find it hard to believe that a lot of people still play.
------------------ "Ah ah... I know what you're thinking. Did he fire six shots, or only five? Well to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you got to ask yourself one question: do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"
:CHUCKLES: I do play this game for old time sake. I just played through eight hours of Realm of Prey on the Earth String. Beside, there is an official & unofficial port of this game and EVO to EVN.
------------------
What's Realm of Prey (I assume it's a plugin... what's it about?)?
Then you need to know Tim's Plugs In.
Empire of Crime
Realm Of Prey
Brotherhood of the Kestrel-COMING SOON
EMPIRE
ENDGAME
And a few others.
Also, get Galactic Scourge
Realm of Prey is basically an excellent plug. Took a while.
Go to the Adds-on Page.
I played EV original for the first time since getting nova...
and two things really struck me. First is how fast and smooth it runs. (my computer is on the minimal edge of running nova, but thats 10 times faster then the computer I played EV for days and days on.
And the second thing is how stinking slow hyperspaceing is... I couldn't stand it.
Inerita less ships, or tunneling organs and not to mention multi jumps really make hyperspaceing nothing. The standard ships are also much faster to jump, and more dont need to slow down as much, and haveing capslock double jump speed, hyperspaceing is at least 4 times faster in nova, and ten times faster still with multijumps. Add to that the dozens of fuel generating outfits, and most ships can do infinite range hyperspaceing.
It makes a huge universe so much smaller. I used to count each hyperspace jump on alternate paths just to save a jump or two, now it dosent matter, you can fly through or around anything with no pain. I want EV ported just so I can add a tunneling organ and play it again, because as it is, it just feels too slow its unbearable. (I actually had a plugin to make every single ship in EVO have fast hyperspace because i loved the feature so much.)

Look at the last sentence, Rich Hardslab. Contact Soviet Mikee for the official and SpacePirate for the unofficial one.

Yes, you need to play Nova. Or get a emulator with OS 8.1 and gamma ramping patch. Anyway, inertialess and Multi-Jump Organ are explained by EldrichEvil, a guy famous on the Nova board for writing Batlle Reports, stories about Nova that teach you playing at the same time for those that have never played before. Yeah, we all still play EV. Fun!
Clean, simple, uncomplicated fun will make EV immortal. I await it's carbonization.

I still play sometimes, not everyday or anything, but every coupla' days. 'Course when it came out, long ago, I was pretty much into 'er most of my free day.....I can't get into Nova like that for some reason, I don't know why....its definatly superior in most ways... And I definatly NEVER felt like playing EV:O for an extended amount of time.

I haven't played in so long...
------------------ I had a dream that I had about a dozen links here. Mostly to other places on this site. Weird.
I played it until I upraded to OS9 on my 6500 and it got deleted. Lucky me, CD! cough
Yes, I also play it occasional under OS 9 on my G4.

So install it again on your 6500. Glad to know you still have it on your G4 though.

Haven't seen you in a looong time, G@rett.
I play the original EV very rarely at the moment... I play EVO pretty regularly, though - it's always been my favourite of the EV series.

We all still play EV because its a classic and so much better than Nova plus the reason its more addictive and its just so cool when you have a Kestrel!

That's a tad speculative, if you ask me. Look at the Nova board, and how many topics it has compared to this one. It's obvious the majority of EV fans like Nova more, but we can never be certain. Many of the people here still play the original game because it's original, for one, and fairly easy to build on and experiment with. I seldom play this game, but that's only because I don't have the kind of time to even start playing more complicated games like EV Nova, and even EV Override. For me, it's a matter of free time, but others who just like to play the games play them, and there isn't any problem with that.
You also have to consider people who have just switched to Macs or something, and have just found this game. Most would like to start with the original rather than skip ahead to Nova.

Personally, I like EVC because the string splits, (Especially the dead-ends). But the main reason is because EVC is a game, and it's a lot of fun. EVN is a simulation, and I prefer the less realistic version.
I don't think its fare to try to compare EV's popularity to EVN's simply based on the fact of the post count of the board. This is not the original board, nor is it even the second board- but the latest replacement that wasn't put up until 2000. Almost none of the original members were even still around by then, and interest had fallen on development for plugs since EVO had slightly better parameters to work with, and people weren't making "This plug has the super-duper kissmyassyourasseverybodysass weapon" plugs anymore- they were going for bigger story lines (hence Nova). EVN's board post is also bloated because of the pre-release guessing and crap that people were doing.
I don't think anyone can question that EV made the largest effect on the Mac gaming community, and 10-15 years down the road it'll be the game out of the three that people will remember fondly like that pyramid game that no-one remembers the name of from so long ago.
