Port Paladin Defense Count?

From what I can tell, Port Paladin has a def count of 3505 (something like that). Isn't that a bit off? Even Gateway Station has only 1600! What's up with this? I have to dominate Port Paladin, yet to try to take a station with a def count that high, and I'm going to be here a while. I wouldn't mind it so much if I could somehow save my pilot during the battle so that I could come back to it and finish it. I tried to fiddle with the def count numbers and set it to around 1500 or so, and restarted the battle. I took out the defense dudes outside, then hailed the Port. They said the usual "we're sending out our ships..." kinda thing, I got the warning klaxon and signal up at the top of the screen, but no ships came out. Also, when I rechecked to hail them again, they were back to friendly, not hostile. Screwy, ain't it?

2700 posts? Congrats! Does anyone have anything constructive (or destructive) about the Port Paladin Def Count?
