More ResEdit-Related Questions

Special ships have a mission bit (example: executive transport is set to mission bit 67). What is the ID of this mission under the ResEdit mďsn resource? What do I have to add to the 67 (in this case) to find the correct mission ID? I couldn't make much sense out of the EV Bible here.

Unless I'm wrong, the Hawk cannot be purchased as the player's ship, correct? If so, is this the only ship in the game that the player has no access to?

Once the Confederation mission string has been completed, what planets are their ships available on? I'd also like the same information on the Rebellion ships.

I'm pretty sure of the answers for most of these questions, I just need to get them verified.

Well, mission ID's can't be obtained just by looking at the mission bit. You can think of mission bits as switches; when you complete a certain mission (the most common example), you often set a mission bit -- that is, you turn on a switch. Most mission bits are used for the purpose of creating mission strings (I'm sure you're familiar with this use), so it flips a switch that activates the next mission in a string. In the case of a lot of government ships -- the ones you see with mission bits specified (say, like the Rebel Cruiser), a special mission bit is set by a mission that makes the ship available for purchase. In this example, when you beat the Alien Cruiser mission, mission bit 61 is set and you can then buy a Rebel Cruiser.

In short, there is no correlation between mission bits and mission ID's unless the developer makes it that way. There's no simple formula for that.

However, I'd look for Pontus's Mission Bit Reporter -- it's a handy tool for sorting out what mission bits do what -- and what mission ID's set which mission bits.

Unless I'm wrong, the Hawk cannot be purchased as the player's ship, correct? If so, is this the only ship in the game that the player has no access to?

Yes, you can't purchase it. This was done by setting the mission bit as a high number that isn't a special tech level at any stellar; thus it's not available at any stellar.

There are other ships you cannot get access to, like the Alien Cruiser and Fighter.

There are also ships, like the Escort Carrier, that you can't get access to but could possibly capture (though you do want to accomplish the mission probably). These cases are more common in plug-ins.

Once the Confederation mission string has been completed, what planets are their ships available on? I'd also like the same information on the Rebellion ships.

I believe it's Palshife for the Rebels and Stardock Alpha for the Confeds, but my memory could be shot.

To make sure, check the tech levels of the ships you're not sure of, and find the stellars that have those tech levels in their special tech fields.

I'm pretty sure of the answers for most of these questions, I just need to get them verified.

Well, I hope I verified most of them. If you have any more questions I'll be happy to answer them.

Thanks Firebird, that cleared up a few things. Regarding Confederation ship availability, I was pretty sure you could also buy them on Luna, but perhaps I'm getting confused with an older version of EV...

According to ResEdit, Luna has the special tech number (5001), not Stardock Alpha. So I would assume you can only buy Confederation ships on Luna.

Yes, the ship-buying location for the Confederation is Luna. That's also where they build them (as noted in the dësc, I think).

Yeap, the description is what made me double check in ResEdit about the Confederation ship purchasing location...

"Luna is Earth's only moon. Terran Naval Yards has its main shipyard facilities here, as Luna's low gravity and near-perfect vacuum are ideal for heavy warship construction."

Yeah, I wasn't really sure; it was a good idea to check.

That gave me a question to ask -- the Rebel Cruiser description says that the rebels are "operating in the worst of conditions" and so on; does the Rebel Cruiser's availability on Palshife imply that it's built there? In the plug-in I'm working on I'm trying to polish up some of the long ship names; I'n not sure if Palshife Shipyards or Palshife Drive Yards or something of the sort would fit the Rebel Cruiser. I was thinking more Akio or something.

No. It is simply sold to civilians there.

The Rebel cruiser sold to civilians? If that's the case, I could add some extra polish to my plugin idea...

Has anyone had problems with the EV Formula Calculator? Whenever I insert a ship ID, it gives me PICT IDs that don't add up with ResEdit... I tried giving the calculator 141 (the Rebel Destroyer's ID), and it gave me sprite and mask IDs of 1026 and 1027 - the Rebel Cruiser's ID.

I keep forgetting you're the type who automatically assumes I should know everything. 😉 And by the time you complete the Rebel storyline, you should be categorized as a mercenary, not a civilian.

A civilian is a person not in the armed forces. A mercenary, unless inducted into the military, is a civilian.

A civilian involved in the military, correct? Maybe militant civilian is the right word if we're going to categorize a mercenary. 😉 I do very much doubt the Rebellion simply sells off their cruisers to the average civilian. A mercenary is really like being in your own armed forces - it's different from being a civilian.

Yes. But a civilian none-the-less.

I never said that. I merely said that civilians (ie. people who aren't members of the Rebellion navy) who are authorized purchase the cruiser from Palshife.

It's not a problem.
The Formula Calc recommends ID numbers that exactly fit into the sequence for all resources related to a ship, so the "correct" IDs for sprite and mask for ship ID#141 would be 1026 and 1027. However, the sprite and mask pict IDs do not need to be any particular numbers as long as the correct ID numbers are entered in the "spďn" resource for the ship. It is conventional to start with ID#1000 for the sprite of the first ship and ID#1001 for the mask to keep things simple.
