Missiles, Torpedoes or Hawk Bay?

Oh man, I've just bought a shiny new Corvette (for the n th time) and I don't know which one to get. I have 56 tons left to use.

I'm assuming you've already decked it out with javelins, flares, and other smaller goodies.

If this is all you have left, I'd hedge between torps and missiles, though missiles are probably the better general-purpose investment. Hawk bays are fun, but I find heavy rocket launchers equally fun.

Heh, I'd probably get lots of torps.

Torps. You can fit two launchers and twenty-six torps on your 'Vette, and that is quite a formidable load.

I thought torp launchers weighed in at 25 tons. That would come out to two launchers and 6 torps...I'd find one launcher and 31 torps a little more worthwhile...

Oh? 😕 If so, then having two missile racks and 36 missiles would be better.

Wouldn't that be wasting ammo? If I were you, I'd buy me some javelins, for attacking small ships, and a turret, for self-defense.

Not necessarily - the faster you can fire off your munitions, the smaller the amount of shielding regenerated.

Javelins are, in my opinion, the best secondary munitions.

Enlighten me: how would a turret help with a self defense?

Hmm, with that amount of free space I would go for missiles, probably. You don't have enough space for two torp launchers and a good amount of torpedoes, so 2 missile racks/36 missiles is probably your best bet. Make sure you have 2 javelin pods and a full loadout of jav-rockets first.

Space Bombs, you can really have some fun with them.

------------------

Firestorm, yes space bombs are very fun, but zax has some needs here.
Go with missiles. Unless you're headed for the confed cruiser, or a rebel destroyer, yer missiles are fine. They are cheaper and take less space. Then save up and buy a kestrel, or steal a cruiser !!! 🙂 :). (if you don't want to steal, just save up money and complete the confederate alien mission.)

------------------
Why? Because I have nothing better to do.

Well, I decided to ignore all the advice and went for a hawk bay :D. I eventually got a Rebel Destroyer, dominated some planets, ditched the pilot file and startid all over again 😉

Hand me the gun and say that again.

Simply circle around the enemy ship and fire the turret. 🙂 Turrets are also good in close combat, if your ship is fast. My favorite tactic is circle, closely , around the unsuspecting enemy, staying behind it, and firing all my weapons. The enemy will eat all of your lasers, protons, or whatever, and go KABOOM!

I think the space-bombs are easily the most fun. Nothing beats disabling a corvette with a single space bomb. However, if you're actually flying anything weaker, you had better be very careful not to end up in the blast radius.

Second to the space-bombs in fun-factor would have to be the hawk bay. I don't know if this is due to the lack of hawks in the game or the thrill of owning a craft with a fighter bay, but it just is. However, replacing lost hawks can get a little bit spendy over time. Try to find a computer AI pers argosy with hawks and do a quick-disable (multiple torpedo rush / space bomb? / surprise attack of some sort). You may get lucky and the hawk fighters could end up in the ammo field.

Torpedos make the most sense, in my opinion, because of their destructive power and range (See missiles vs. torpedos topic). However, with only 50 or so tons to work with, they don't make much sense from an economic standpoint. A single launcher can't pump 'em out fast enough for me and two just doesn't leave the room for ammo.

Missiles, on the other hand, are virtually useless against capitol ships. They're only extremely effective against fighters and other small craft, especially when you're in a hurry. I usually throw a missile rack and a few missiles onto any kestrel I own to streamline lightning-disabling procedures (3 does it nicely).

A quick word on fighter bays: I typically don't even launch my fighters from their bays. I've always been a little to afraid that I would lose a seriously expensive investment. I've also never been very trusting of the computer AI. 99% of the time, I'll tell my escorts to hold position upon entering a system just to keep them out of trouble. AI ships with fighters are an exception. I'll often let them launch their fighters and then hold them back. After all, landing on a planet will regenerate them. (Is the same true in EV Nova? I havn't bothered checking yet...)

With escorts, I just use them for cargo space. Usually, I attack, my escorts chicken out, and that's final.
Lightning bay? Well, you just simply capture pirates and add them to your bay. Simple... And unlike you, I trust the AI. (Only the Lightnings.)

I asked you how they could be used defensively, not offensively.

hehehe, i know everyone's gonna oppose me on this, but heavy rockets all the way. 😄 Missiles and torpedoes are good for people who like to attack from a distance, but i like to get up close and personal with my enemies, it makes the battles all the more entertaining to see them explode right in front of my rapier. Unfortunately, there is always the risk of dying from the shockwave.

Target any fighters to use the turrets on while fore guns fire on your real target. Expecially when you own a Kestrel or 'Vette.
Just a suggestion.

Heavy rockets weigh the same as space bombs. Same with the launcher and the bomb rack.
