Hey, y'all, I am now, offically an Escape Veocity fan! I have yet to reach the "fanatic" stage, but that will be soon. Ship favorite: light freighter (opposites attract!)
But I have a little question: is there any purpose in getting Keychains on Mars? Or Workdroids on Sirius Station? Or lobsterswherever they are? If you don't want to tell me, fine, I just won't get them.
Also, I cant figure out how to shoot. Nothing happens when I press the fire button. Goitta go

if so are they cannons or turrets? if your weapons are turrets you must target the ship you want to shoot at in order for the turret to fire. or if your weapons are missles or torpedos you kinda need the launcher. now do you have version 1.0.5? and dont cosider yourself a fanatic untill you know the game inside and out. if you need anything else ask the fanatic.

Don't worry about the commodities named lobsters or keychains. Their official name is "junk", and called that for a reason. I find it best to stick with regular commodities (favorite route: Earth -> Lethe Prime with Med, Lethe Prime -> Earth with Food). Have fun out there!

I've been playing Ares too long. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I find that to be an immensly dumb rule. Oh well. Now I can fight back. Yesss!

Would you really want to fight back in a light freighter?

It's not a dumb rule, just more realistic. From my point of view, you should have to target the ship you wish to fire your turrets at. Ares does that for you automatically, which kinda takes away some of the fun.
All the fun begins once you get your hands on a Rebel Destroyer.

If you love your freighter so much, but an Argosy. They're faster and have the firepower to chase off more than defenders. You can turn an Argosy into a pretty good warship, but that means sacrificing most of the cargo space, so if you want a warship, I'd say you're better off in a Corvette. I never knew about the Earth-Lethe trade route. I always buy Indutrial at Cappela, sell it at Nemesis and buy luxury goods at Nemesis and sell them at Cappela. It's shorter, and when the Luxury Goods are priced at 'Higher' you can really make some fast cash. If you're trading, don't trade alone. Hire the cheapest freighters (Light Freighters), buy the fastest ship you can afford (usually defender) with a missile jammer or decoy flares. Tell your freighters to hold position (so they wont be attacked) and high-tail it out of the system as possible.
Some tips from a fanatic (yes, I am a fanatic, I just haven't been on the boards that long)

Are you kidding? Stealing money from pirates that hang out in Propus and Darven nets you far more money than trading. If you can't take out the pirates, do rush deliveries or, if you don't mind a crummy legal status, rob Luxury Liners in Capella. Heck, if your combat rating is good enough, even dominate Capella -- it only has nine patrol ship and gunboats combined.

Lemme see. An Argosy usually gives you, say 30000 credits. Capella-Nemesis-Capella can give you about 500000. And trading is supposed to be a means of getting cash early in the game, if you have the firepower to blow up a Kestrel in under 20 seconds, why do you need the money? Probably the best way to make money is to Have a Kestrel, nick disabled Lightnings and sell them at 1000000 each, but that requires a kestrel.

Agreed. I can make money easier at Pirate Cove's than having to answer a bunch of questions from Regis.
Hmmm, I got enough cash to buy a Corvette with full upgrades, including a Hawk bay and 2 hawks, in under 1 hour from trading, although It doesn't get your combat rating up.

if you buy a vette you'll get a combat rating pretty fast.
But whats more fun, going from Cappella to Nemesis or trying to deystroy a pirate corvette in a scoutship.

It's not a 'rule', it's simply how the targeting system works. When you're investing the extra credits needed for guided weapons, it makes sense that you should be the one telling them what they should guide themselves towards.

That's half true... It requires a tractor beam and a disabled Kestrel which the Lightnings came from (unless you do it your way...) . If you disable the lightnings and drag them to its Kestrel, they'll conviently board. Then board the Kestrel, and take the Lightnings. They should appear as weapons. That's a major money maker!

That's something I've never tried... I'll keep that one in mind.

Yes, it is! Congrats on being the first person to figure that out!
Update: Combat rating:Competant Ship: Defender, soon to be(probably)Light Freighter(I usuall Mass Expand so I'm a little more fighting-worthy, as well as Shield regenerater).
If you ask me, ramscoops are a waste. Nobaody asked, did they?
I like ramscoops, and definately don't think they're a waste. In the long run, they'll save you plenty of money. And if you're constantly fighting, you'll have plenty of time to get extra fuel.
