Shuttlecraft: 3 laser cannons. Don't expect to destroy anything tougher than an argosy unless you use the Monty Python.
Scoutship: 4 laser cannons, 2 javelin launchers+rockets, 1 missile rack+10 missile, 1 armaplast plating. Quite a formidable ship if you use it correctly. I suggest circling your opponent and firing your laser cannons and javelin rockets. When your target is out of range, use your missiles.
Courier: 1 laser turret, 2 laser cannons, 2 javelin launchers+rockets, 1 missile launcher+10 missiles, 1 mass expansion. This ship is a cargo ship, not a fighter, keep it that way.**(/quote)
With these ships, I tend to forget about the l cannons and turrets completely. With the exception of the scoutship, you can't do very much. Instead, I go for very heavy missile capabilities - enough to drag down most warships - and sometimes a pair of javelin pods to replace standard weapons. I hate ammunition limits, but...
(quote)Originally posted by Zax: Clipper: 4 laser cannons, 2 javelin launchers+rockets, 1 missile launcher+15 rockets, 1 armaplast plating, 1 sheild booster, 1 mass expansion. Use the same strategy as the scoutship. (/quote)
I tend to cut out on missiles at this stage, and go for more armour and shielding, as well as the speed upgrades. With that, I can usually make a pretty nice fighter.
(quote)Originally posted by Zax: **Argosy: 2 proton turrets, 3 laser cannons, 2 javelin launchers+rockets, 2 missile launchers+30 missiles or a hawk bay, 1 torpedo launcher+ten torpedoes, 7 mass expansions. Makes an average warship. Too slow for circling manoevers, so use hawks/missiles against fighters and use your torpedoes against larger ships, then when they are sufficiently damaged, move in for the kill. **(/quote)
Nice outfits - although how you got 7 mass expansions, I have no idea. I tend to throw in the speed, shield, and armour upgrades (including tritanium), forfeit missiles, torpedoes and Hawks, and use the rest of the space for protons and lasers. It's a matter of style - I hate anything that I run out of. : )
(quote)Originally posted by Zax: **Light Freighter. 1 laser turret, 1 hawk bay, 2 missile launchers+20 missiles, 1 torpedo launcher+15 torpedoes. Why you would want this as a warship I don't know. Just send in your Hawks, hold down the shift key and pray Rapiers can fit them comfortably, where Lightnings can't, and a Rapier with tritanium...
(quote)Originally posted by Zax: Corvette: 2 proton turrets, 4 laser cannons, 2 missile launchers+20 missiles, 2 javelin launchers+rockets +1 hawk bay or 1 torpedo launcher+25 torpedoes. I was never keen on fighters either, to be honest, as I always pampered them and sent them out for the easy jobs. My Corvettes are armed with turrets, cannons, javelins, then speed, armour and shields, and any spare room is used for missiles. Since Corvettes are pretty nasty, and all the armour & shields make mine very strong, I tend to go for the more blatant circle of death, rather than strafing (although I still strafe cruisers).
(quote)Originally posted by Zax: Kestrel: 3 proton turrets, 5 proton cannons, 2 torpedo launchers+30 torpedoes, 2 missile launcher+35 missiles, a sheild capacitor and 4 mass expansions. A good warship, same tactics as the corvette. (/quote)
Usually use the torpedo space for other things, and a few more missiles. I tend to go back to strafes, which are possible with speed upgrades, and are powerful enough to destroy anything lighter in one or two goes. Of course, heavy rockets are absolutely devastating, so I still start off with a rocket-taunt, and a missile-taunt for good measure (get them down to primaries before I dispatch them).

Not crap at all, I just wanted to write out my opinions.

Good tactics, although I usually like fighters, they give me a bit of extra firepower and you can prevent them from dying if you keep attracting your targets attention with your own weapons. And you can only fit four laser cannons to a ship, so if a ship can stock five cannons, I usually but five proton cannons instead of four laser cannons. I forgot to mention speed upgrades, they're massless and should be added to any ship.

3 lasers, 2 proton?
i hate to mix weapons. (its an OCD thing.)

You could even have four lasers and one proton, but I agree with U.E Admiral, I hate to mix weapons.

I wouldn't go near having only one of anything - they tend to miss a lot and be fairly ineffective. I don't have a probably with mixing weapons - not since lasers > protons in cannons. I like having good weapons.
This may sound funny.
My Rapier is armed with 12 missles(my favorite) 1 proton turret, 3 proton cannons, a rear laser turret. My shield rating is so high because of my 4 shield capaciters, and a shield booster. I can usually slug it out with most capital ships. So in my opinion missles RULE!

I sometimes get a/two missle launcher and max out space on my alean curser with missles and armor>>> captil ships are space dust
Works for me!

Okay NOTE TO ALL n00bs, SHEILD CAPACITORS AND BOOSTERS ARE USELESS! THEY ONLY INCREASE YOUR SHELDS BY 1.5 UNITS AND REGENERATE THEM 0.7% FASTER!!! open res-edit to find out why.
P.S my rapier has 2 missile racks, 50 missiles, 4laser cannons (they're more powerful than proton cannons, look in res edit to find out why), 2 javelin pods and a layer of armaplast. It makes for a good planet dominating ship

I myself use torpedoes, but only when my armour's low and I'd die in a dogfight. I used to use missiles because you can take out the pestering Manta that's attacking you with a few, as opposed to torpedoes which won't usually hit. so go for torpedoes.

Have you tried putting 4 shield capacitors and a booster on a Lightning and then having a dogfight? It's shield regeneration rate becomes insane.

How did you manage to get a proton turret and a rear laser turret on the Rapier? Both take up a turret slot and it only has 1.

I know you're a mod and all that, but you should know tha a sheild booster only takes -2 off your sheild regeneration rate, and that's peanuts. Maybe you use a modified version of EV.

Instead of accusing him of cheating, why not open up EV and find out?

Fine, I open up EV. I look at the Sheild booster, it says that theild regeneration increases by-2. I open up sheild capacitor, I find that it increases sheilds by 15. I open up Defender and Patrol ship, it says they have sheilding of 100 and 200, therefore all sheild units must be divided by 10 to give an accurate shipyard representation of the true ships sheilding. 15/10=1.5. And I'm not accusing Mazca of cheating, I modify EV all the time to test plugs (and I opened up a newly downloaded verion of EV, by the way.

My Rapier has always come with a rear laser turret, and still not had its turret slot full. Probably yet again another bug on my copy.

Meh, I never use turrets unless I can have 2. 1 is just a waste of mass, when a coulpe of laser cannons will suffice.

Open up ResEdit all you like. But have you actually tried the tactic I suggested yet? Go on.

I generally put nothing but cannons on a Destroyer or anything smaller. You can stuff a lot of proton cannons on a Rebel Destroyer, and firepower that concentrated can hurt... especially if you decided to go ahead and get proton turrets as well. Nasty combination.
By the way, can anyone tell me how to change how far a cannon / turret beam can shoots within ResEdit? Can't seem to find out how to do that...
