Whenever I've played EV (and I've used multiple copies on different computers), I've always encountered two hostile fighters during the alien mission string. Yet most folks I've talked to on the forums say there are three. This doesn't add up, as even my un-edited copies of EV say only two alien fighters show up during the final destruction mission in ResEdit. Has anyone else out there encountered just two fighters during the mission?

Those two "alien fighters" are actually your two escorts. The Alien Fighters are contained aboard the Alien Cruiser, and are launched fighters.

So that would mean there are suppost to be four alien fighters in the mission? Or did you mistake my "alien fighters" comment for the two cruisers the Rebellion gives you as escort?
Nope, the alien cruiser only holds three, hence they would be in the ship fields and not the mission fields, if you look in resedit. so yes, you get two escorts in the rebellion plotline, and fight a cruiser and its three escorts.

Yeah, it's 2, and after I blow away the cruiser, those 2 little red bastards show up ever now and then just to make my life miserable.
Well, it SHOULD be just one, seeing as how I cleaned one ship's clock but good...

Well, there are three fighters caried aboard the Alien Cruiser. They should all be launched, but sometimes something goes wrong. That may account for the discrepency. However, if you looked in ResEdit, you'll see that the Cruiser carries three Alien Fighters and no where are two Alien Fighters mentioned.

That's the way the resources are designed. However, those fighters are independent of the ones you found before. Had you destroyed all the fighters, those fighters would still attack you. And it is usually one fighter at a time, not two.
Maybe there's only 2 alien fighters in the Confed mission string because you only get 1 cruiser, and there are 3 fighters in the Rebel mission string because you get 2 Cruisers to help you,

That's what doesn't make sense... My copy of EV, as viewed in ResEdit, says there are only two fighters carried by the cruiser.

Didn't you once say that you had modified your copy of the data files? Every copy of Escape Velocity I've ever had gives the alien cruiser three fighters, and the (url="http://"http://www.evula.com/survival_guide/ev-ships/aliens.html")Escape Velocity Survival Guide(/url) seems to agree.

I do have a very modified copy of EV (which actually does list there being three alien fighters), but my untouched versions seem to have a mind of their own. Two fighters.
/me wonders if older brother had messed around in ResEdit without telling him.
I've never seen a pair of ALien fighters in the regular game, just one and three.
On another note, Skyblade, you missed a huge DP sale in Boozerma...

Yeah, it seems to be a bug in certain copies... I've only ever encountered two.

You should download a new set of data files to compare. The files from the official Ambrosia CD confirm that there are three Alien Fighters carried aboard the Alien Cruiser.

Or I could simply change a single number in ResEdit. I was just curious if anyone else had encountered such a copy...
I've always seen three fighters (or a lone one), in various versions and copies of EV. EV-Edit is telling me there are three, and NovaTools (still works, at least for viewing) tells me there are three, and I distinctly remember fighting three. I say fighting...it was more along the lines of running circles around the battlecruiser and trying to stay away from all three fighters at the same time. Fun.
(edit)Although, half the time, those alien fighters just pack up and fly past the system border while I'm attacking the battlecruiser, and I can't get them to come back(/edit)

Heh... a version 1.0.6 really needs to be released. Several items needing correction float about the forums.
