Okay, this board is practically dead so this topic is just to liven things up (please don't lock this one EVula, I can't remember topic I've made on this board in the last week you haven't locked).
Well I've been wondering which one of the four is better. I think the Hawk is the best, but it gets obliterated by the Gunboat at short range, and the manta's swivel laser cannons have greater accuracy, and their speed may allow them to dodge a missile or two. Anyways, what is your opinion?

The only ship out of those that I ever fly is the Patrol Ship - it's handling is just wonderful for me. It feels exactly responsive and speedy enough without being hard to control. The Manta is nice, but I never bother with it - it isn't much better than a Defender and you can't buy one until late in the game anyway.
I dislike the Gunboat's soggy handling, and the hawk is OK without being in any way worth the bother required to get one.

I take it we're putting the lightning in an entirely different class? The lightning has to take the "Best Fighter" award of all the ships in EV, based of course on personal opinion. Some people, I suppose, would prefer a ship with heaver hitting weapons such as the rapier, but I'm all about speed. Zoom Zip Zoom goes the defender.
I guess if I had to pick a ship out of the four listed, I'd hop in a confed gunboat. Just give me a couple million credits to customize it and I'd have a beast. The part I dislike about the gunboat is it's inherent Confederate status. I spend my time zipping around the galaxy performing good deeds. Everybody likes me but half the universe is prejiduce against my spiffy little blue-dotted ship.

probably the patrol ship or the manta. Well, patrol ship. (the only way you can fly the hawk is a plugin.)

First off, I only lock topics if I have a reason to. Stop giving me a reason to, and I'll stop locking them.
Second of all, I've only locked one topic, and moved another one (which locks the original, but since the topic still exists (on another board), it doesn't count).
Third, the board has actually picked up a lot more life than it has in a while. It doesn't mean that I'm going to lock this topic, though, I just thought I'd mention that.

Of the four, I prefer Gunboats as escorts (gotta love the heavy rockets). As for my own ship... I don't fly fighters.

I would have to say... the Manta it's better than the patrol ship and it can dish out a lot of damage if need be. Throw a swarm of them against a Confed cruiser and leave me to take out the patrol ships and it is another win for the Rebels.

i fly but one fighter. the lightning. as for the others i havnt flown them. but IMO from what see, the manta has my vote on the grounds of: A) it usualy beats the PTBoat it will take out a Gunboat quite often C)Hawks cant do these D)ive never seen a PTBoat fight a Gunboat.

You can only fly the Alien Cruiser if you use a plug-in. However, in my opinion, the best ship to fly is the Alien Fighter (using a plug-in to retain the outfits, of course).
I did a test with a Hawk and a Gunboat. Since all AI ships have +50% ammo, I gave the hawk another missile to make it fair. I did 2 tests. First time, the Hawk wins. Second time, the Gunboat wins. The Hawk strayed too near a heavy Rocket.
By the way, which is better, an upgraded Argosy or a Standard Corvette (same outfits as it came with)?

The Manta beat the Patrol Ship 9 times out of 20 battles - the Patrol Ship beat the Manta 6 time out of 20 battles, and there were 5 cases of total annihilation. Manta > Patrol Ship. The exception appears to be under the cover of their respective cruisers, in which case the Patrol Ship always seems to fair better (the fighters go after the opposing cruiser: the Patrol Ship does damage and lives, the Mantas usually get caught in cruiser-cruiser crossfire and fall without the Confederate Cruiser even targetting them.)
The Hawk beat the Manta 10 times out of 20 battles - the Manta beat the Hawk 3 times out of 20 battles, and there were 7 cases of total annihilation. Hawk > Manta.
The Confederate Gunboat has not been tested by me, but would typically beat any of the other three by means of its heavy rockets - although its shields, manouevrability and primary armanent are absolutely laughable, the heavy rockets are dangerous. Should the rockets miss, the battle will most definately side with the other ship. In swarms, the opposing starfighter would stand a better chance against the Confederate Gunboats.
Therefore, the Confederate Gunboat is typically the most dangerous of the four spacecraft. In swarms, however, the Hawk would most likely be pre-eminent.
Yup, but the patrol ship looks better I did ten fights of a rapier against a hawk, the hawk won twice
