hey, i'm just a lowly EV player just missioning along in a rebel cruiser. Besides just doing shipping and rebel missions and stuff, what are some other fun things i could do? -aymeigh
------------------ The answer is forty-two
Well you can take over every planet, or try too capture a Confed cruiser. (If you want one that is.)
------------------
Have you checked out the archive of plugins available on the site? EVGE, Pale, Final Battle and other major add-ons and Total Conversions are available for Escape-Velocity.
You have killed the Alien Cruiser, right? That's pretty much the climax of the game. You can keep playing after that, just to finish all the little things you havn't had a chance to.
Mission Strings: Do you have a tractor beam yet? Do you have a cloaking device? Have you run mission for shipping companies? Have you been hauling parts to TurinV for the terraformers there? Have you helped out the Armetis group yet? Have you saved Diphidia from ecological disaster? Have you located a ship full of kestrel sub-assemblies (For that matter, who has?) Have you started a new game and worked through the confederation missions? -Have you ever owned a Confed Cruiser? -Do you know what a particle beam is? -Have you ever busted up an Escort-Carrier?
The single missions... Have you helped a fugitive get to the safety of a pirate world? Have you destroyed countless confederate VIP transports?
Fun Shiznit: Have you dominated a bunch of planets? Do you have an escort fleet to be proud of? Have you dropped half a dozen space bombs right over a planet just before demanding tribute? Ever bought a fake ID? (Cheap Thrills... Wheeee!) Do you know what the SOL is? Has anything ever suffered the wrath of your Forklift? Ever designed your own ship? Ever written your own mission string? Ever edited EV in any way for that matter? Ever try to take down those pesky Confed Cruisers in a Shuttlecraft? (massochistically fun!) How about a defender?
Answer a few of those and I'll tell you what's left.

i've beaten teh aliens and stuff but i don't have the tractor beam, how do you get that? and as for teh first list, i don't think i've helped out armetis yet, but i've done all those other ones, and all the single ones. i haven't gone confederate yet, i dunno, is it any fun? and what exactly is the last big rebel mission, or the one after the SEAL team is all over with? ps i forgot which planet the fake id was on, i saw it before but didn't have enuff credits
Years ago, when I initially played EV religiously, I chanced upon a disabled bulk freighter in the Zebetrious system. I boarded it and got a little pop up mission dialogue box saying that it was loaded full of Kestrel subassemblies. I took them, but not knowing what to do with them, I just dumped them into space. Only when I hacked EV's data open and read all the mission data did I find out I had to take it to Blackthorne... come to think of it, there might have been a mention of it in that mission dialogue box... doesn't matter anyway - the blackthorne kestrels aren't that great anyway. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to work for the triad in Empire of Crime...
------------------ Given that God is infinite... and that the Universe is also infinite... would you like a muffin?
Mmmmmm, 20 space mines over Levo=BOOOOM. I think the ultimate escort fleet is 6 Rebel Cruisers, the confederate cruisers are too slow to act as escorts.
------------------ Do you want to know my signature? really? well... Tough!:p
is that a given that that bulk freighter will be in the zebetrious system? how can i find that? anywayz, i'm on a new mission, where i have to board a confederate transport and get the weapon prototype, but i forgot where it told me to look for it! was it supposed to be near ruby or astrodyne outpost or what

Can't remember where this one originates ... but it has "Astrodyne" mission tasks in it. Keep looking. You'll find it. (You are checking into the Bar on every system which has one, right?)
... don't think (I)'ve helped out armetis yet...
That's a good one. Hope you like fighting lots of Kestrels....

Visit some pirate systems....
(Visualize learning to use the (shift) key, too.)

i know this is cheap, but no one remembers exactly where that confederate transport is? it just sucks because i've been looking for it around Ruby (that's where i thought it was supposed to be) and i can't find it anywhere!
You need to read the mission instructions more carefully.
The Transport is coming from where? And trying to GET to Ruby. So ... think about the route it would take. You'll find it. I have confidence in you....
thanx kaptain! i take it its supposed to be coming from astrodyne outpost and going to ruby. and i forgot where astrodyne was! good grief.
ok hold on. i just found astrodyne, and traced its course to ruby twice, and some surrounding systems. how could i miss it. geez. so is it after this mission that i get the beam?
Here's the brief text for the mission in question:
?It seems that the explosions on P-0805 didn't destroy the whole facility,? the Rebel officer begins. ?They crippled it, but didn?t destroy all the data. More importantly, one of the weapon prototypes has survived. A spy has informed us that the Confederation plans to move the prototype to Ruby. They?re shipping it on an executive transport in an attempt to make the transfer with as little fanfare as possible. The transport will probably be guarded, but we?re not sure. Search the systems near Ruby. Find the transport. Board it and recover the weapon, then return here.?
Maybe that will help.
As for the Artemis Group missions, you'll find the first on any inhabited stellar. There's a 5 percent chance that you'll find this in a bar:
An old man in tattered clothes approaches you. ?Greetings, my friend,? he says. ?My name is Lucas. I need safe passage to <RST> in the <RSY> system. I will reward you well when we land. Are you interested??
That should get you started on what looks like one of the last mission strings you have left.
Spoilers Past This Point. Careful.
As for the kestrel sub-assemblies, I wouldn't bother. I've been playing since 1.0 and I've never run into it.
However, here's is the run-down on the mission:
Intro Text:
As your crew spreads out to explore the expanses of this ship, they discover that the aft cargo hold is filled with dozens upon dozens of large crates that bear ?Top Secret? stencils and are labelled with the Atinoda Space Industries logo. Opening up the crates, you discover that they are filled with Kestrel subassemblies. This is a golden opportunity... do you want to load the parts onto your ship?
Brief Text:
As soon as all of the precious technology is loaded on to your ship, you cut your link to the other vessel, letting it drift away into space. Your executive officer offers some advice: ?Captain, let?s take these parts to <RST>. They have both the need for these parts and the technology and facilities to assemble them.? It sounds tempting - however, your conscience tells you to abort the mission to try to score points with the Confeds...
A bulk freighter named "Derelict Freighter" should appear in a confederate system. Notes: Can not be in a "Wimpy Freighter" IE: AI-Type 1 (Courier, Shuttle, small stuff) Confederate Warships are set to Auxillary Ships. Apparently, this mission doesn't exactly go over that well with them.
And finally, The Payoff:
You are paid 1 million credits and the cost of kestrels on Blackthorne Station (The Return Stellar) is reducted by %20. Not a bad deal considering that a typical kestrel will run you 10M.
I'm going to pay closer attention to the derelicts around me from now on.
thanx. you guys rock
ok this sucks. i have checked all systems 3 jumps away from Ruby. should i maybe check 4 jumps away? urrgh, i'm so impatient! to me, near means 2 jumps away or less.
No Problem. I'm sorry there isn't much left to do in EV. That's why it's time for something else entirely: (url="http://"http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/cgi-bin/vftp/show.pl?product=ev&category;=plugins&page;=1&display;=name")http://www.AmbrosiaS...=1&display=name(/url)
This will link you to a massive directory of plugins. New ships. New worlds. New missions, governments, etc.... You can find just about everything here. There are even Star Wars and Star Trek conversions. Some of my personal favorites are:
Pale - Extremely well done. Polished and virtually bugless.
Escape Velocity Game Expander (EVGE) - EVGE more than any other large plug (Maybe with the exception of the unreleased/unfinished? EVES) has kept true to the feel of the original EV. For those looking to break out and beyond the boundaries of the original.
Final Battle - This plug has always been slightly buggy but always fun. It was one of the first major plugins to be released for EV. Extensive use of vis-bits create a constantly changing universe in which the rebels finally destroy the confederation in a massive war which you happen to be at the center of.
Arena - A true test of EV combat skills. especially when coupled with a stopwatch and a strict avoidance of Monty Python tactics.
Other people here on the board can give you their favorites as well.
If you can wait a few months (Or a few years as everyone else has), a new plugin will eventually be released called New Republic. Originally started by Kevin M Boots nearly 5 years ago, It's gone dormant, active, dormant, trash can, resurection over and over again. Now, it's finally nearing completion (On the work-o-meter, I'd say it's 99% completed) and you should have it sometime in the next decade. Keep and eye out here and you'll know when it hits the shelves.

Okay. If you've checked everything up to 3 jumps away, you're probably too far. Try this: Abort the mission and return to where you got it at, Palshife. Hit the bar there until you recieve the mission again and head back to Ruby. It should be no more than 2 jumps away. It will be an Exectuitive Transport called "Weapons Convoy." EV does screw up once in a while.
thank you aj, you are swell
When you've finished EV (might I recommend trying both governments?), here's a plug that I would most definately recommend:
Empire 5: Heart of Darkness
I've played it through now, and its great. The Weave really captures the whole essence of the rebellion, but has a much longer, much more in-depth story. Plus, it truly is a taxing plug. I mean, not wanting to spoil anything, but there are multiple missions where you absolutely must take over stellars to complete a mission. Bug-free, fast, frantic, and great looking. The whole empire series is great, but Heart of Darkness is, in my opinion, the best. The last time I was in contact with Tim (the developer of the empire series), he was working on another plug that looked very good, but I haven't heard anything new.
As for the executive transport (incase you haven't figured it out yet) it isn't going from astrodyne to ruby, but from the uninhabited stellar past Sirgil... try tracing a route from there, it'll be around. I know which system its in, but I won't spoil it for you. Keep searching - its there.
One more thing... whats the basic plot of the New republic plug?
We know you are probably frustrated that we don't just say "The Transport is in 'X' system." But the truth is, once you find it on your own, you'll have a much greater sense of satisfaction.
Look at what cable_guy told you about tracing the obvious route from NGC-0805 to Ruby. (I believe the "Astrodyne" name is an example of MB's sick/genius mind. It's in there to confuse us. And it surely confused me too.)
Once you find the blasted Transport, remember you are just supposed to "disable" it. I killed it about ten times before I managed to board it. (That was my most frustrating mission -- even worse the Artemis or Alien missions.) Keep smiling...!
