Good to hear. I've also finished the the chapter which contains the founding and development of the UFDW (United Federation of Dreden Worlds), and I'm working on the Battle of Dreden at the moment. What I posted earlier in this topic is actually the first chapter, although it takes place after the battle. It will get more interesting as we go...
Also, this story will have complete hand-drawn illustrations (once I get the time to finish them), colorized in Photoshop. Drawing puts credit toward my Arts high school credit, so I can shed plenty of time on it.
Speaking of chronicles, what's your story about? Or is that top secret at the moment?

Suggestions: Make sure that no one just leaves in the middle of the story. If they have to leave for a short while, make them let everyone know in the discussion topic. If they want to leave permanently, make them find a replacement. Make a limit for a # of players per government so that, for example, Lethe doesn't have three players while the 'feds might have two.

Number of players per government should be largely irrelevant with the way I plan to do this. I'm also not planning on forcing the Rebel/Fed story to be the main thread of the webstory, though it may well end up that way anyway. If people all want to be independent, that'll probably be fine with me.
Actually, we can probably start gathering people now, so I can start pretty much whenever, because players are really about all I'm going to need.
I don't have my exact title worked out yet, but suffice it to say that I'm going to be involved with Diphidia II and controlling that planet through an NPC.
The three firm rules I have so far:
1. Use Common Sense at all times. 2. The Moderator is always right. 3. There will be no new technology. Flagships may be upgraded in accordance with rule #1. If you want to put a Rapier Bay or something on your flagship, that would be the only form of new tech acceptable.

Captain Luke, head of the Astex Defense Corps. (I think they'll need one if you're Diphidia... ;)) Moderate funding from the Confederation. Flagship is a Confederate Cruiser with extra shields and armor, a particle beam (if that's allowed), and a bay for the best Confederate fighter, whatever its name is. I have a fleet of 3 more Cruisers and 5 Frigates. Luke likes to hang around New Providence and guard the freighters from pirates and Rebels. Close ties with the Confederation and Liberty Station.

Sure, sure. That'll give me a good excuse to start some of the stuff I want to do anyway. Thanks.

That'll probably be up to whoever runs the Confederation...

Subject to approval from the Confed Navy, I imagine. I don't have any problem with Independents using military tech, or vice versa, but you should have their approval first in the case of using military tech. Astex is technically independent, though I imagine the Confeds would license their tech to you, since you guys are so buddy-buddy.

Yes.
Originally posted by Luke: a bay for the best Confederate fighter, whatever its name is.
Well, duh, the Confed Cruiser comes with a Patrol Ship bay. You don't have to mention that.
Originally posted by Luke: I have a fleet of 3 more Cruisers and 5 Frigates.
Don't pick the rest of your fleet just yet, I'm still working on the system for starting fleets/construction, and that might actually be a tiny bit large. OTOH, looking at how small a fleet would overwhelm my initial inclination on a starting fleet size is probably going to cause me to revise that. Um, yeah, definitely. That shouldn't be an unreasonable fleet at all. /goes back to drawing board
I think the best way to do it is to post the story topic and tell people join if you want, pick a side. Not to advertise for 6 months (BFSIII) and to let people drop out. Most webstories, people say that they'll have it ready to go in 2 weeks. 2 weeks later, its a month, a month later.... You get the point.

Yeah, well, I mean it this time.
Seriously, there are two things I need before starting: a simple map (which, I might add, is already half to three-quarters done), and some players. I'd prefer to start after EVW tubes so we don't have two going at once, and not before Sunday, but other than that, I'm ready anytime. I'll probably have the map done within the hour.
The map, BTW, is going to be the only official external reference. This is not going to be a complicated story.
Basically, I'm planning on starting ASAP, players or no. It'd just be convenient if I had a few planning to participate ahead of time.

Not at all. Here's a "teaser:"
Takeover! ... The Commerce War
(This story was inspired by Captain SkybladeÂ’s Battle For Sol webstory on the EV Board (Summer 2001). I am trying to maintain the same high level of energy and excitement found in SkybladeÂ’s stories ... and avoid the chaos that sprung from allowing new technology and ships. Judge for yourself if I have been effective. ...And, thank you, Joseph.)
=============
“I just killed my best friend!!!” Karl wanted to scream out loud.... Instead, he barked, “Next!” and the gunners targeted another PDP Rapier and blasted away at it. “I’ll hurt later,” Karl muttered, “I’m busy right now....”
Hours later the battle was over. The casualties were tallied. The dead had been ceremonially cremated and jettisoned. The wounded -- personnel and ships -- were being triaged.
Kaptain Karl was finally alone with his thoughts. And he was not good company for himself. Wondering for the eighty-ninth time, “How did I get in this fix?” Karl attempted yet again to reconstruct it....
--------------
Two years ago, in 2644, the healthy competition of capitalism in the west-central portion of the galaxy turned very unhealthy. As so often happens, no one seemed to know precisely what triggered the intense fighting ... but everyone seemed know it had something to do with a large convoy of Freighters loaded with Root Extract and Seaweed. ...And credits. LotÂ’s of credits.
The convoy, made up of Bulk Freighters and Light Freighters en route from Spica and Kathoon, was ambushed in Polaris space. Tens of thousands of tons of product were stolen or destroyed. The Root Extract Market on Darven and the Seaweed Market on Diphidia both collapsed.
Economic conditions went from Boom to Bust so quickly both DarvenÂ’s and DiphidiaÂ’s systems were plunged into Depression. The governments of each system blamed the other for the fiascoes.
(Observers noted it was bound to happen. For the last decade Diphidia, Zaxted and Sauron had economically allied against Darven and itsÂ’ two neighbors, Perseus and Propus. Each faction belligerently claimed the other was greedily manipulating the markets in Food and Equipment. Since all six systems participated in these markets; the stakes were high. When Sauron, Diphidia and Zaxted formally aligned themselves under the name MerchantÂ’s League it only made it worse. The competition quickly formed the PDP Group ... and the tension and anger only increased.)
The tensions erupted into war with the attack on the convoy.
... Well, that's the first part of the first chapter. Look for the rest on Chronicles ... in another year or so.

Karl: Story looks good from what I've seen. Looking forward to its release. I'm honored that BFS inspired you.
Mac: I'll be happy to help you run the webstory, or just plain participate if that's all you need.
Hey Mac - Can I participate in your webstory?
If so... Prime Minister of Zaxted
Flagship: Modified Kestrel (Death Incarnate) - 1 extra torpedo launcher + 10 extra torpedoes - Slightly inflated shields and armor - Flare launcher + 30 flares - 2 extra proton turrets
Fleet: (subject to change due to public disclosure of fleet sizing rules) 3 Kestels 6 Corvettes 12 Rapiers 12 Lightnings

Of course. Everything else there looks pretty good; the ship mods certainly qualify under rule #1.
Originally posted by Captain Skyblade: Mac: I'll be happy to help you run the webstory, or just plain participate if that's all you need.
Another advantage to taking the minimalist approach is that it becomes very easy to run. All I have is a strictly political map, which might need updated once a day as systems change hands. I think I can handle it. So, if you want to participate, just pick a side.
Speaking of the map, I've finished a preliminary draft of it. Working on this, I'm trying to work out a balance between realism and as few rules as possible. The main issue to control here is fleet sizes and buildup. My current intention is to make this much more free form than past stories, but avoid the completely unrestricted chaos of BFS I - I don't think the anarchy will work as well with a bigger group. I also want to avoid using EV's default price structure, which is unbalanced for this sort of thing, nor do I particularly want to work out some kind of precise strength rating for each ship. So, what I'm thinking of heading for right now is scrapping credits per se entirely, and going to a system of economic and industrial units. (Note - economic units included primarily so that players can engage in economic warfare, or hiring mercs, or similar, otherwise I would have scrapped them altogehter. This is in keeping with trying to make this a true multi-dimensional story, rather than a war simulation.) My plan is to give ship classes a rating, and ships in that class cost x number of economic and political units. Basically, we're looking at fighters = 1, medium ships = 2, capital ships = 3. (Exception, Defender - they suck enough they would probably count as a half, so you get two for one) Economic units would be stored in the government as a whole, probably added every page or two - I'm still adding up some numbers on that. Industrial units, primarily for shipbuilding, though if someone else figures out some other use for them that's fine, would be stored by planets. So, to build ships, the fleet would have to linger for a post at a planet with sufficient industrial capacity. I'm not planning on any formal time for a planet to regenerate its industrial units, but keep it in line with rule one above - let's not be hitting the same system for it's full capacity twice in ten posts. This both encourages realism and keeps fleet sizes managable.
So, on my map, I've gone through and given every system provisional economic and industrial ratings. This has been somewhat subjective, but the main factors I considered were presense(arg - sp?) of a shipyard and tech level for industrial, and commodity prices, desc texts and a couple subjective modifiers (i.e. Sol got bonuses for being the Confed capital, being the human homeworld, and having a significant tourism industry, which is good because it would have gotten a 1 based strictly on commodities) for economic strength. I wouldn't mind if everyone takes a look and points out anything you think should be different. I also gave food exporters (based mainly on having low food prices) A dot or two for agriculture, with two dots designating a major feeder of the galaxy based on desc text.
Anyway, the map is (url="http://"http://home.attbi.com/~e-gamerguy1/evwebmap.gif")here(/url). Gray dots are industrial, green economic, and yellow agriculture. If a color doesn't show up, that designates a zero.
PS if anyone else has any aspect of certain systems they want to exploit and would like systems with certain characteristics marked in some way, let me know.
PPS I'm still looking for a name, ideas welcome.
Hummm I'll be the leader of Zaxted system (Unless Sirgil can quit the Rebellion and become independent?).
Command Ship (Mod-Kestrel) stats:
(Sold missiles and missile launchers) (Sold Lightnings and Lightning Bay) Increased shielding and maneuverability (sp?) 4 Proton Turrets 4 Proton Cannon 2 Torpedo Launchers + 50 Torps
There, that seems reasonable, doesn't it? That's what my Kestrels usually end up looking like.
Possible fleet: 4 Kestrels 5 Corvettes 15 Rapiers
Am I supposed to include merchant ships in that?
As for a name, how about "Macavenger's Common Sense Webstory"?
I hereby propose that we rename the rules the Edicts of Macavenger; they have more ring that way. Also, add; "the Moderator reserves the right to expel anyone who commits major breaches of the above Edicts of Macavenger." And put the "Use Common Sense" bit in bold.
And I agree with not hitting a system for it's full productivity unless it's urgent; the little civvies need some resources to build civvie things with, right?
And (although I'm not planning on using them) should we allow Neutron Turrets? In accordance with the First Edict of Macavenger they would be very heavy.
------------------ (url="http://"http://www.geocities.com/shades_shipyard")Shade's Shipyard(/url), the source for your ship needs.
Hey there everyone. I would love to join in this new webstory, but i don't ahve much experience in the way of online stories :).
First of all can i PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE have a lightning from EVN?? I just love the look of those things, i'll only have EV weaponry and the like, but i just wanna have a lightening from EVN, they are soooo cool.
So if you do let me ahve an EVN lightening, here's what it'll have.
Modified cloak (modiefied so fuel loss is insignifigant, if thats ok) Space bomb rack 12 Space bombs (enhanced a tiny bit so they can knock out a confed cruiser with 2 hits, again if thats ok) Escape pod Auto eject 1 nuetron blaster Upgraded engines All the avaible sensors Ram scoop 5 jumps of fuel All avaible shield upgrades
Uhhh... I think thats it. If this doesn't all check out with the rules, then i guess i'll change the stats. (please let me ahve an EVN lightening)
And for my character? He will be a Sauradian (reptillian like creatures with lots of talons and courage, fast reflexes, scaely strong skin... If im alowed that). He will own the small mining station built on the remains of the Astordyne station (IIAT short for if im alowed that). The rest of my ships are
10 bulk frieghters 2 rebel cruisers (i bought them IIAT) 20 mantas (IIAT)
Thats all i can think of now, if this isn't all ok, please say so, and i'll change it.
start wishful thinking maybe i could get a Saurdian battle dragon end wishful thinking
------------------ Yesterday, we bent our nexts to kings and emperors. But today, we kneel only to truth -Kahil Gibran
I may not be Mac, but I can tell you that we're only using standard EV ships (except for command ships, which can be modified). So the EVN Lightning is a no-go. Also, we're only using stock EV worlds, so a mining base on Astrodyne is a no-go. This is based entirely on the stock EV universe, so your character is a no-go (although Tim Isle's Empire of Crime is great; look out for Realm of Prey). But I'm not in charge; that's just very very likely what he'll say. So you're welcome to play as long as you use the stock EV universe, obey the Edicts of Macavenger, and for goodness sake read the thread before posting.
Now that that's out of the way; I've decided to be Yemuro, not Zaxted. A little less economic points, but just look at those industrial points! Yai aik ai!
I'll take Darven. Character Name: Leto Ipvicus Position: Darven Administrator Background: An ex-trader and Privateer, Leto was born on Levo a few years after the Great War. His father was a prominent beuacrat in the Levoan government so he had a good education and a strong grounding in politics and leadership. After he graduated from college he bought a small Courier and quickly began to make a name for himself as a pilot running food and medical supplies through Pirate infested space lanes. Leto became the Administrator of Blackthorne Station after in-fighting among the local Pirate bands weakend them enough for an organized group of merchants (led by Leto) to kick them out. Over the years he has earned the admiration of the more respectable Pirate leaders through his piloting skill and bravery. Pirating is not allowed in the Darven sytem, but pirates are still allowed to dock for repairs and sanctuary... as long as they behave themselves . Personal Flagship: Modified Kestrel, the Phoenix -Enhanced Speed, Maneuverability, and Shielding -Torpedo System replaced with Heavy Rockets -+1 Proton Turret -2 Neutron Cannons
Fleet: 15 Corvettes 12 Rapiers 12 Lightnings
------------------ Out ride the sons of Terra, Far dirves the thundering jet, Up leaps the race of Earthmen, Out, far, and onward yet - Robert A. Heinlein, The Green Hills of Earth
How are defense fleets going to be handled? I think we might be able to multiply the number of dots (industrial, economic and agricultural) by 2, then give the planet as many ships as that can buy in one go. Example: Darven has five dots total. Multiplied by two=10 dots, so you could have a defense fleet made up of say 1 Kestrel 2 Corvettes and 3 Rapiers (if you use the 1 dot= a fighter 2= a Corvette ect. rule).
I like your basic idea, Mac. I've got no objections.
I'll participate / lead the Rebellion. I think I'll have the time to make some kind of contribution to this webstory.
I like your thingy ... thingy ... wait a sec, I'll find it eventually ... defence fleet thing, Ipvicus. When do we start?
