Not much but here's something to remind you about a plugin from the past called The New Republic. Originally concieved and designed by Kevin M Boots many years ago, The New Republic has been in the hands of many developers and laid dormant on many hard drives. I was handed control of the project last year by Kevin and, with the help of a small team, I began the long and painful task of working the bugs out of it. Then my real life fell apart. The most recent incarnation of the plug resided on the Hard Drive of Joeseph Burnette until approximately 1 month ago when we managed to regroup our Debugging team and set back out to kick some more bug-ass. In the past month, we've made significant progress but no release date is in sight yet. For now, however, just so you don't forget it exists, here's a crappy little web-page with some NR content: (url="http://"http://home.san.rr.com/talcott/nrpreview/nrpreview.html")http://home.san.rr.c.../nrpreview.html(/url)
Enjoy.

What was Kevin M. Boots's name on the old boards? I remember his name but cannot match a handle with it...
NR looks pretty awesome. Next time you have a few minutes (don't worry if you can't) is there any chance you can give us a few numbers? Say, how many systems, missions, and whatnot will be in the game?

When I was on the boards, he was calling himself 'Kevin M. Boots'.

Heh. Time for a little vagueness...
Actually, I don't have the latest version, so I don't know the exact numbers; plus I have to let my computer crash before I can run Basilisk (it's a strange glitch somewhere, can't trust Windows too much), and I don't want to do that.
Let's just say it fills up all the ship and weapon slots (er, at least I hope all the weapons slots are filled...otherwise we'll have to add some fun ones).
And there's an appreciable number of systems tacked onto the old one, but not quite as much as, say, EVGE or F-25.
Lots of missions too. Haven't really focused on testing those, but what I've done has been quite fun.
New governments should be rather exciting. Some of them you really want to meet; others you never want to.
Yeah, that doesn't help, does it? Ah well, that's the best I can do at the moment.

I don't have hard numbers at the moment and am too lazy to compile them now, but it's something like this:
New Repbulic uses all the ship resources, though some ships are carried over from EV.
Weapons/outfits are not completely maxed out, but there are enough goodies to do most anything you need to.
Systems - roughly double the number in EV
Governments - at least 5 completely new governments and a new sentient species.
Missions - still undetermined, but more than in EV. This is the least complete and most difficult part of the plug. Some of the missions are just fun, but there is plenty of serious work for a mercenary captain too - if you don't mind getting shot at.
Some new planet and station graphics, some new landing pictures to go with the new planets, changes in some of the old familiar places, probably some other stuff I can't remember right now.

That's all I wanted to know. Thanks.
Wow, some of those pics looked really cool. What exactly are you guys doing to finish the plug? Need help, I would be willing to help you out anyway I can.

Okay. To complete the plug, we're simply beta testing what's already completed. Everything is complete. The problem is, we average about 6 new bugs every day.
For the time being, I'm not accepting any more beta applications. Those who are already doing testing are people who have been working with the plugin for the past year (At least) They know it inside and out and have a working knowlege of what to fix and how to fix it.
Anybody without that knowlege would problaby shoot themselves 10 minutes into the testing process and I don't want anybody's blood on my hands until next year

Ahhh.....when I first saw this, I thought it was referring to the "Star Wars 2: The New Republic" plug. I guess not.
Still, looks cool!

Any vague idea on when the plug will be ready for release?

Is "sometime in the 21st century" vague enough for you?
As AJ said, we are continually finding bugs, glitches, and inconsistencies that need to be corrected. We all are working around school, jobs, and other real-life demands so there is really no way to predict when the job will be finished. New Republic has been in development off and on for around 5 years now, a few more weeks or months won't matter much at this point.
If I didn't know any better, I'd say it was older than EV itself...

Well, there was a period of time where nobody was standing by it, just walking over it and ignoring it.

Actually, several such periods
Those of us working on it are all a little bit crazy (You have to be to work on a plugin that's been around since the beginning of time.) As for it's greatness, the EV community is the jury. The more I play it, the more I like it. And, the more I play it, the more I realize just how big the damn thing really is. It's also scary to be playing in the setting of the EV universe without seeing an original EV ship for a few dozen jumps.
The hardest part of debugging NR is most likely going to be making sure that all the VisBits are working properly. I've located one bug so far in that field and I'm hoping I don't come across another (And yes, VisBits are used all over in NR. The Universe Changes and grows as you complete various stages of the game.)
Kevin, Did you can the sequel to NR or is that still alive on your EV CD?
"Kevin smacks Low-Key upside the head."
What are you talking about AJ? What NR2.
With shifty eyes, Kevin runs away into the darkness..............with a CD in his hand.
