really sorry if this has been addressed before, but hey, I'm a newbie!
Right then. I've worked with the Rebels for ages, and have access to all their ships and outfits etc. Being a cruel and heartless money-grabber, I held all of the Confed systems to tribute (well, except Centuri, Sol, and that one with Ruby in it). Anyhow, I was in some southerly pirate system and noticed the fake ID. Being dim yet ambitious, I freed all of the Confed worlds, parted with my Rebel Cruiser sniff and purchased a less obvious Kestrel. I then bought the fake ID, and I've been cruising round the Confed systems for ages, hanging round the bars like a...well, that's not important, but what I mean is; is it possible to get the best of both worlds now by becoming an ex-Rebel Confed, despite my patriotic Rebel past? Any help, besides starting a new pilot file (the shuttle - NOOOO!) would be greatly appreciated - cheers!

So, you mean you want to be able to purchase Rebel and Confed secretive ships and weapons/outfits? Well, I haven't tried it because the Rebel Destroyer can be outfitted better than the Confed Cruiser, but whatever floats yer boat. Just try killing some Rebels and Pirates. Then you'll be on your way to the Confed missions. I don't know if this will work, so backup your pilot. But if it does you will have access to both shipyards/outfit yards. Sound good?

Sounds great. How's that for abruptness?
If you've done any rebel missions, there's no way to get the Confederation missions, and therefore no way to get access to Confederation technology. Even the fake ID won't help.
However, there is one interesting thing I'd like to point out that's somewhat related to this topic: If you complete the 'Destroy Alien Cruiser' mission for the Confederation, you will obviously be given access to Confederation ships on Luna. However, if you go to Palshife, you'll find that you also have access to all the Rebel warships.

iSense Matt was programming in the wee hours of the morning when that mission was made...

I don't think it's actually an error; I've examined it, and it looks like that may have been the only way to do it and get all the desired results under the old mission bit system. Matt probably figured that it was unlikely that anyone would finish the Confederation missions and still have a good enough legal status to land on Palshife.

Nope, I've fixed it in a plug before. CompBitSet2 for the Rebel "Destroy Alien Cruiser" mission wasn't used. I gave both of those missions 161 for CompBitSet2 and changed the bit on all the Alien Fighter përss. Works perfectly.
Say, maybe there's an idea for moderation, EVula...

I believe, however, that the CompBitSet2 field did not always exist, or at least did not always work, and that without it, what I said stands.

Hmm. Well, it was always used on the Confed "Destroy Alien Cruiser" mission already, so it must have worked when the bug was written, or it wouldn't work at all.
I believe there was a plug called Switch Sides that made it possible to do both govt's mission strings.

The thing is, if I download the plug to play both sides, my conscience yells "you evil cheater!!" and I feel compelled to wear a sackcloth over my head for several weeks...

I usually find a passenger or cargo mission for that particular Forbidden Planet™ which I wish to land on. And my conscience remains silent.

I actually usually have high legal status on most planets of both governments after completing the Confederation storyline.
On the subject of being a confed rebel, whenever I try to be an evil Confed bloodsucker, my mac's conscience chip makes the rebel Manta I'm shooting a confed cruiser. So, the moral of this story is, SCREW THE CONFEDS! POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!!!!
