In every version of Escape Velocity I have seen or heard of, the alien cruiser carries three fighters.

No, I'm with Skyblade on this one. I've fought the aliens many times, and in original, unplugged, v1.05 EV, there are two fighters.

What the heck? As Jimbob said, I've never seen more than two alien fighters... Even ResEdit says the Alien Cruiser carries a single bay with two fighters. And this is version 1.0.5, which I have on three different computers. Two fighters in every copy.

Then you've screwed up your data files. Mine say 3, and my 1.0.4 data files from before I knew how to use ResEdit said three (or such was their effect :p). It's always had three. Try downloading a fresh copy, and see what that says.
My data file from 1.0.5 says one bay, three fighters, and I have made a point of ~never~ modifying an EV data file. Furthermore, every time I've fought the alien cruiser, in both 1.0.4 and 1.0.5, there have been three fighters. Didn't you once say that your data files were modified a fair bit?
Anyway, if you want htjyang-style proof with a link, I refer you (url="http://"http://www.evula.com/survival_guide/ev-ships/aliens.html")here(/url).

Remember, though, that your cruiser support usually engages one or two of them, so you might not see all three, even though they're still there. If only two show up in the system, you're either using a plug or an altered data file. Again, try downloading a fresh file from Ambrosia's site if you don't believe me.

Same here. I've never altered anything relating to the alien cruiser...
I remember version 1.0.0, when I didn't even know what ResEdit was. There was ~always two fighters, not one more, not one less. That hasn't changed as I've moved up through the EV version releases.
I re-downloaded EV on one of my other computers a few days ago, rushed through the Rebel mission string, and engaged the aliens. What do I see? Two fighters and their big mommy...

But, did only two attack you, or did you tab through the system and only find two? Also check it in ResEdit, without altering anything.
A simple poll about governments turns into a roaring arugment about aliens.
When I did it I saw two fighters, and only two. They then attacked me, and at that time there were four blips on radar: Me, the two fighters, and Big Momma.

There have always been just two alien fighters when I've tabbed through the system targets. In the recently download copy of EV (un-edited), it still says one fighter bay with two alien fighters...

Then you're plugged: You should have escorts on the radar. Either that, or your escorts engaged one, and they all left your radar view, when there would be three.
Am I going to have to record a movie of me downloading a fresh copy. opening it in resEdit, and showing you the three fighters to convince you? Geez...

We never said we didn't believe you, I've just never engaged, seen, or targeted more than three alien fighters. And I've had to have done the alien missions at least fifteen times since '96...
