Couldn't you at least make the masks by selecting the black area around the finished sprite, copying it, and pasting it into a new document? I can do that easily in Graphic Converter, you get a perfect mask in about 5 seconds that way.

You can, but auto-selections usually aren't very exact, and tend not to pick up everything you want them to (even when your tolerance setting is extrememly low). I do my masks the way Weepul showed me, and everything comes out exactly right. Time is the only problem, but hey, it usually is with everything.

One method is to open graphic converted and set threshold to "1". This turns every color that is not black to white. Works quite well.

Yes, I used to do that, but I think the color select is better. See, with that method you may have to clean it up if there are black pixels in the middle of your sprite. Instead, just click the magic wand (dynamite stick, whatever, not the transparency one) and select your black background. That will pick up all the black outside of your ship sprite. Then you can copy and paste it into a blank file, making a perfect mask with no clean-up.
What's so inaccurate about that, Skyblade?

If you have lighting applied, it's likely to cast shadows along the sides of your ship. Those shadows cause dark grey to completely black sections at the edges of your graphic, which tend to cause problems when doing any kind of selection. I've tried numerous such methods using Photoshop, but manual selection works best (time-consuming though it is).
Last night, I tried a new method for creating my ship masks with Infini-D, and I got much better results. I applied lighting directly from the given camera angle, colored it white, and set the intensity to maximum. Only needed a minute or two of Photoshoppin' after that.
So Captain Skyblade, when can we expect this out?

Give me a month. I'll try to beat that, but you never know what the Christmas season may bring.

You could basically call any kind of progress log spam, you know. I've posted those messages hours apart.
Yeah, I know. Just messing with you. I don't think I'll be able to find a good graphics program within affordability.
Side note: 95 percent of my class perfers PC's over Macs. I've converted two so far to the better side with Apple.com and pictures of the G4, and almost have a few more. Just need to find some good stats to compare 76 Gigaflops to.

Have you tried Mechanisto? It's a free 3D modeler, available in the utilities section of the ASW addons page. I'm using it for my 3D stuff; check out the Devil Ray, Skyblade, Intrepid, and Hammerhead in the HC BfS III shipyard for some rather primitive examples.

You could try (url="http://"http://www.apple.com/powermac/specs.html")this(/url) comparison page on Apple's site. Where do you get 76 Gigaflops? The G4 dual 800 runs at 11.8, according to Apple.

Well, there are a few good 3D programs out there that won't bust your budget, such as Amorphium. It's just a matter of how much you're willing to pay.
Macs are better. We true followers of the great Apple all know that.
Ok, thanks.
I just find out that there is a G4 in our video production lab. I could possibly use that to convert some more to the good side. Apple rocks. I can't believe people in my class really think microsoft is better than Apple because they have a monopoly.

The bigger guys are usually the bad guys. It's true with just about everything (Star Wars, EV and Override etc... :p) The majority of Americans and many Europeans like the PC system better, simply because they've never used Macs. I grew up on a Mac (ever since 10mhz and a 20megabyte hard drive was impressive), have a Pentium 333, and I've found what I prefer. The Mac OS is much more user friendly, and much more powerful (underdog though it is). It's just a matter of getting people to try it out, instead of judging it before they've tried.
