Velocity?

I am no physics makor, but I somewhat understand the physics of EV. But I am very confused. If you are going a certain speed and stop accelerating you will continue at that speed. That being said, when you activate the afterburner, should you not remain at the afterburner's speed, unless you turn? I realize this is being nitpicking, and would make the game less fun, but is there some grounds to this issue?

Yes, in theory, you would continue at the same speed the afterburner sends you at until you begin accelerating in the other direction. You would then drop to the normal speed of your ship.

Now, if EV was placed entirely on a planet, then there'd be no questions. If there was gravity in space, then the ship would slow to its orginal speed after hitting the thrusters, due to the fact that that ship wouldn't be able to go that fast. This would be because of gravity.

But maybe the thrusters are pushers. Like, maybe they push the engine to a speed that it cannot handle, but can for a certain amount of time. So, when you hit the thrusters, you are doing more than the maximum of your engine's turbine, so it then slows after it has had enough.

Wow. I just thought of this too. But it's true.

So, you can take my opinion, or you can say:

TSB, it does not matter what the engines can handle. What we are talking about is the momentum given by the afterburners. "An object in motion tends to stay in motion until acted upon by an outside force." The problem is that - in space - there is no outside force. No matter means no friction, and of course there is no real gravity (technically there is, but let's not get into all that). After you fire the ship up to a certain speed, you could turn on the engines and it should keep going until something happens that affects the momentum.

That's Matt Burch's quote, and in this case I go with him. It's pretty much all moot, because in space there are no top speeds, other than c.

Yeah, the physics and technology needed to attain things that are in EV are pretty mcuh impossible to recreate in a game like EV.

Another thing that proves some screwy physics are the speed of the ships. Bulk Freighter going 10 times the speed of light? Bah, only in a game. 😉

Buik freighter going 10x the speed of light? Impossible. Hydrogen molecule with a weightless engine strapped on going the speed of light? Impossible. Anything but little, massless photons and neutrinos going the speed of light? Impossible.

I think that I could compile a book larger than a world atlas and more insightful than the Bible on the technical inaccuracies of EV, but I would rather spend the time reading HHGTTG or searching fruitlessly for infini-d 4.5.

yes, you would eventually slow down but the afterburners are just added acceleration as long as the engines are firing you would be accelerating the engines are not needed to maintain speed after you have gotten going. But if that were the case, then controlling the ships in the game would be far too complicated and generall suck. Its just a game not a NASA flight simulator.
