I like the Rebel Cruiser because of the sound effect of the manta's being launched, it makes me buy it and when I buy it I have to upgrade the speed and turnrate and give it a bit more weapon space so I can get a hawk fighter bay. I also stock up on torpedos and heavy rockets.
Sometimes if I can afford it I hire escorts to help me smash the confeds even though I can take a confed crusier myself

Agreed.
I started last night by taking the Rebel Cruiser sprite and converting the entire background to bright green (the way the Ares engine likes them). However, Hera didn't seem to get along with the sprite... As for details, I'll probably post those at the Ares forums. I hope the sprite isn't screwed, since it only took me an hour to carefully select the corners around each frame.
I've never tried creating an AI vs AI battle between the two capital ships of both sides, but I've seen them take place in the game. Usually, as one might suspect, the 'Fed Cruiser and its better shielding and firepower pay off. But every now and then, I'll find an engagement between the two end up in a draw (both get disabled, or both fet destroyed). About 30% of the time, the Rebel Cruiser leaves victorious.

In my going around the galaxy pillaging everyone, I have seen many a battle between Rebel and Confed Cruisers. Guess what? The Confeds ALWAYS win. Go Confeds!!!!1

Not always. I've watched Rebel Cruisers leave a battle between the two victorious.
You're a Confed fan? Get out of here, before you are either killed or bombarded with Rebel propaganda!

Bah, you Reb's ain't so tough. Naw, yur jest a bunch o' hogwash. Any Confederate ship can waste any Rebel ship in its class! What d' yeh say about that? Huh?
Confederates, stand proud! We can wipe out those damn Rebels in one fell swoop! If we wanted to, that is.
Picture this: a single battle. Every ship in the entire game that has a beef with someone else. Confederates, Rebels, Pirates, Lethean, Cydonian, ConEx, Starbound, and Astex. Who would come out on top? I'd say ConEx, Lethean, and Confederate ships would be the only ones left.
Confederates rule! Ar har har har!

Rebel Destroyer.

Lethean, UGe, and Probably the Rebels, though them vs. Confeds would be close. Pirates have a tendency to go after Confeds before Rebels in my experience though, so that would certainly tip the scales if they weren't already. UGE would undeniably win a merchant war.

Most of the pirates that I have seen go after the Rebel ships, while the UGE vessels pick off their enemies. Now, if every ship that belonged to ANY government in the galaxy was in one system, I'm betting that the Confederation would come out on top. Death to the Rebel Scum!
(NOTE-I enjoy blowing apart Rebel ships more, and I'm really not a Confed fan but they have better ships)

But the UEG doesn't battle other shipping companies.

Economically, they do. For a battle like this, you'd have to make the shipping companies all fight each other. It'd be easy enough to do in a plug.

I tend to think the original, HHGTTG, is the best book in the series. The first few are all very good though.
UGE doesn't attack, but they do fight back against ConEx when it attacks them.

The first three books of the trilogy are the best.

Agreed. Mostly Harmless and So Long lost didn't have the same affect. Ther're still good books though.
How'd this become a gov debate? Rebel vs. Confes Cruisers. I'm gonna do 10 AI test with 7 battles each to find the victor. 5 battles in Meteor systems, 5 in clear. So, I would I go about doing this?

I pine for the EV:N AI. Then we'll see the two cruisers at it. (...thinking that EVN handles the use of maneuverability better...)
You would all be wise to check out the original debate on confeds vs. rebels in the EV archive section available (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/webboard/Archives/Archive-000001/HTML/20001030-6-000187.html")here.(/url) While it starts out as a debate on the two governments, it quickly moves to ships and then on to other funny stuff. It's board history and you'd do well to check it out.

The Rebel Cruiser is loaded with missiles, and is armed with heavy rockets. By contrast, the Fed Cruiser's got missiles and torpedoes, no heavy rockets to be seen. Now lets face it, the highest yield weapon next to the space bomb is the heavy rocket, and the Fed Cruiser doesn't have it. Oh sure, it has those neato neuron blasters though. You know, the one that shoots about 6 inches in front of your face. Good luck hitting a ship with that toy. Now you may be saying "But Crusader, Torpedoes do way more damage than missiles, so it evens out." No it doesn't. I'm sorry people, but Torpedoes are slower than mud, and they are so easy for me to dodge it isn't funny. Even in a "slow" Rebel Cruiser can doge em with no problems, I know because I've done it. Torpedoes may cause nice damage, but they are slow and any smart pilot in a Rebel Cruiser can dodge a flurry of torpedoes. Can that be said of the slow Fed Cruiser? The one thing the Fed Cruiser does have going for it is its shields, but the Rebel Cruiser's superior speed takes away from that a bit. **
Hehe. Thought I'd bring that up.
