This is certainly realistic, cadet (in fact, you're getting more than you should). Think about it. Pirates are trouble makers, renegades, thieves. In other words, outlaws! They have no organized government. In fact, if Escape Velocity were truly realistic, all the known pirates would have developed their own small bands of fleets to fight not only the major governments, but each other. Pirates in space would be no different than they would in the 17th and 18th centuries. They were small bands of outlaws who owned maybe one or two ships, and they faced the entire dominating British Navy. The only band of pirates that ever gained much power were the Corsairs, but the United States Navy rid the Mediterannian of them once they devoted a large fleet into doing so. In short, you are getting more power in this webstory than a realistic pirate leader should.

We are only called Pirates because we happen to loot ships. In reality we are the remnants of the United Earth Government, fighting to regain our position as the democratic leaders of the galaxy. We initially supported the Rebellion until those traiters turned their back on us and forgot all about our aid.
