Make a copy of the pict, open the copy in Graphic Converter or a similar program, and put the threshhold(sp?) to full. This should make any color besides black completely white.

I wouldn't know how to do this exactly with Mechanisto, but inside Infini-D, I apply the color white with maximum glow to every portion of my ship (or planet). I then disable shadows, and set the lighting directly above the ship. I spin it like I normally would with a sprite, and that's all there is to it.

I don't know if Mechanisto lets you, but in Strata I just make a movie of the ship. Then I put it in m2s and let the sprites and mask get done that way.

You can do that to, but if you are wanting all the mask for a bunch of ships, it would be much quicker to make a copy of your sprite, open the copy in photoshop, and put the threshhold on full. Try it, I think you'll save a bunch of time that would have been wasted rendering the ship all over again.
Don't you put the threshold down to minimum? That's how it's always worked for me in GC. Well, not minimum, that's 0 and makes everything white, but 1 makes everything but black white.

I save my sprites and masks as 36 frame movies as well, in QuickTime format. I then copy the frames into Photoshop one by one...

Photoshop is truly a luxury. I'd recommend it to anyone who has any kind of interest in graphics. The money isn't easy to come by, though...

Sooo how can I make "shaders" for mechanisto out of .pct and other standard graphic formats?
Man-O-man.... Making 3d models that look like EV ships is really hard. I keep making stuff, and it keeps looking like a bunch of cylinders and sheres sitting next to eachother... Just looking at the wire frame and trying to make it look good is hard as hell. I think I will just keep getting other people to make graphics for me.
I have had nothing to do today, so I kept playing with mechanisto. I figured out how to make wings for ships, and I made this:
It is sort of cool... at least now I can make simple things like this, and not have to rely on shipyards for planets, because it is very hard to find spobs on the net nowadays...

I am trying to make a simple ship in mechanisto... I make a hemisphere, and then put a small sphere on top of it to be the cockpit. I give them very different shaders... But when I render, the sphere is nowhere to be seen. I set the camera angle to right above the sphere so that it cannot be missed... still not there. I played with the light to no avail... I moved the sphere away from the hemisphere and rendered, and it was fine. The file is (url="http://"http://home.cfl.rr.com/aresev/shipscene.sit")here(/url). It is a mechanisto scene file. I would love it if someone could tell me what was wrong.
Hemispheres can only be viewed at certain angles, noramlly you can't see then from the back. It you want that kind of shape. Insert a spere and dent it from the back to make a half-sphere. You will have to adjust different dent setting for it to make a clean dent that make half a sphere. Or, if you want, I can post a model of a half-sphere here. Hope this helps.

That image of yours would make an excellent spob object. If you don't want to continue making ship attempts, at least you could texture spheres and use them as spobs. Keep trying, modelling will come around soon enough...
