New Horizon system names messed up.

Hi! I'm a long time reader first time poster. 😛 I have been having a problem with New Horizon (and Dark Beyond actually). All the system names and planet names display as bunch of garbage. This happens with ship names also. It doesn't seem to be a plugin size issue or anything.

I have 60MB allocated to EV and Quantamire Trilogy seems fine and it's bigger then Dark Beyond. I've tried redownloading both of them and they still do it. I read through just about every post in the forum and haven't seen anyone else mention this problem.

Could I be missing a font or something? I'm using Mac OS 7.6.1.

Anyone have any advice or experienced this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Are you by chance trying to run more than one plug at a time? By that I mean major plugs that are likely to overlap in terms of the resources they change.

Or (and this is more likely, maybe): are you using a pilot file that you've used with other plugs? If so, try using a fresh pilot altogether.

Nope. The only plugin is EV Tuner and I was starting a new pilot. The plugin provides some pilot files also but they do the same thing.

This happens to me in EOC. But I'm running EV under emulation. Sometimes I think it might just be a problem with running any operating system older than OS 8. But I'm not really sure.

And you've substituted the five New Horizons files for the five original EV files: EV Data, -Sounds, -Music, -Graphics, and -Titles? If so then I dunno. I just tried it myself and had no problem. You may want to contact the plug maker and ask for guidance.

OS 7.6.1 will have NO problem running anything EV. You've just done something wrong in your setup process. (and I hope you have Virtual Memory off.. if you don't, then EV will go screwy)

Sigh. Yeah virtual memory is off. Good thought.

I'm pretty sure the setup process is correct too. Tried it a couple of times doing it exactly like it says in the docs. Same thing with Dark Beyond also. Tried them numerous times double checking what I was doing with the docs and even downloading new versions.

I AM running it under emulation but no other plugs have ever had a problem. My machine is pretty beefy(800mhz 256meg ram) so I even run EVOveride all the time with no problems. It's just these 2 plugs that are having problems (well at least so far).

Just for the record I use a PC over a Mac for one reason and one reason only. My work is all PC's and I'm a programmer so I need to work at home, etc... Can't afford more then 1 computer at a time and I ended up giving my old Mac to my grandma when her Mac croaked. Now I'm having serious withdrawels and getting pumped over EVNova. I might just have to bite the bullet and give blood or something to buy a newer(used) Mac.

Anyone who actually thinks PC's are better is a masochist. IMHO of course. Though I did enjoy building my PC. That's something I couldn't do with a Mac. So there's something I guess.

That problem is almost always as a result of memory. 60 megs should be enough, but maybe under emulation the rules are different. I've also heard that too much memory can sometimes mess EV up though, so you might try kicking that down to 40 or so. If that doesn't work, run it up to like 100; if things are already screwed up, what have you got to lose?

Hmmm... Hadn't thought to lower the memory. I'll give that a try. Like you said it can't hurt. 🙂 If not I'll probably have to get a Mac off of Ebay or something anyway to play EVNova. I doubt emulation could handle it. I guess I could sell my Magic cards they are just sitting in my closet right now anyway.
