Plugin Development Questions

This may seem like a question for the Dev. board, but I think that its ok here...

Where can I download the EV Resedit template? I couldnt find it on the addons site under utilites... does it have a new name now?

And I know that ResEdit is much prefered over EvEdit, and that ShmeltaV is great for missions, but will the Ev Developers map work? I know it will work, but is it good and stable like Res or is it unstable and crash prone like evedit? I just mean, should I use it or not?

Well, I'm pretty sure the ResEdit templates come included with the EVBible, a necessity if you wish to edit EV through ResEdit. Now, I'm not too sure what you mean by the Ev Dev thing, mayhaps you could elaborate?

I mean the EV Developers Map.. Its a utility for the creation of systems and possibly stellar objects, im not sure. I was just asking if it is a good, stable tool to use or if I should just try to stick to ResEdit.

------------------

Well, I've never used that, but then I've never tried to do any serious editing of system placement in ResEdit, though I imagine a grid coordinate map would help with that. The version of EvEdit I use is 3.2, and it works fine for me, though its shareware thing is very annoying once you've used it for awhile. Now, Macavenger seems to be a very strong proponent of ResEdit, but I've never been able to get everything down in it to use it comfortably.

So instead, for major edits I use EvEdit, but for minor tweaks ResEdit is best for its reliability, plus any kind of outside guides and such that you can lay your hands on of course.

EV Developers's Map, sadly, is not a complete program. Pontus lost the source code before he could finish it. It dosn't do spobs.

EVEdit 3.2.3 (I think that's the latest, but I havn't used EVEdit in ages) has a pretty bug-free system and spob editing system. I suggest using that.

One thing that we can all say, anyone who does spobs in ResEdit, at least for a larger plug, must be insane, or a masochist (sic). It takes forever and is very nerve-racking.

However, Pontus' later effort, EVO Developers' Map, is complete and does an excellent job with spobs, dudes, message buoy strings, descs, and anything else needed for system/spob creation - and works fine for EV as well as EVO plugs. A nice feature is the ability to preview the spob and landing picts, including custom picts, in the application.

As for doing spobs in ResEdit, it is slow, but not slower than doing them in EV-Edit and then going through again with ResEdit to clean up the messes left by EV-Edit.
