Don't think there's an official explanation, but I've always though of it on the lines Number Galatic Catalog, or something like that. It would fit better if rearranged. If I can ever do the TC plug I'd like to, I plan to use SCN, for Stellar Catalog Number, which makes more sense.

NGC is actually a rel designation. It stands for New General Catalog. It's a catalog of stars, nebulae, and galaxies created in the late nineteenth century by J.L.E. Dryer and updated in the sixties by R.W. Sinott. It is a reference guide for finding and identifying as well as describing a stars properties.

And just in case anybody else was going to ask, all systems in EV (at least the non-NGC ones) are real stars in the universe.

Uh, actually, many of them are references to various science fiction works. Zaphod, for example, is a reference to a character in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy named Zaphod Beeblebrox, who could accurately be described as having "two heads, three arms, and an ego problem." There's also various references to Star Trek, Star Wars, Dune, etc.

1.I don't think so.
2.No, but you can capture them.
3.Rebel, Confederate, Diphidian, Artemis Group... I think there's a couple more.
4.The answer is 42.

Yep, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. What a great book... Zaphod Beeblebrox (the main character's best friend's best friend) does, indeed, have three arms, two heads, and a huge ego. The third arm was sergically attached, but he was born with the second head if I remember correctly... Huh? What? Oh yes, Escape Velocity... right.

I used to always wander why the opening screen to "Escape Velocity" showed a Rebel fleet attacking earth, since the Rebel mission strings in the game do not allow the player to actually lead an attack on Sol...

How do you know it's Earth? It could be a depiction of the Rebellion's first major victory, or something like that. For that matter, that wasn't the original image. Take a look at (url="http://"http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/Ambrosia_Times/March_96/Art/EV1.gif")this image(/url), which shows the opening titles from a pre-release version of Escape Velocity.

Castor and Pollux are real stars. Apollo was named after the American moon-landing project, which is why the planet in that system is named Armstrong. Zeus and Hera I believe came directly from ancient Greek mythology. Persephone, which contains a planet called Rupert, is another reference to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. In Mostly Harmless (book 5 of the h2g2 trilogy), a tenth planet is discovered in the solar system, which is officially called Persephone, but is nicknamed 'Rupert' after an astronomer's parrot.

What makes you think he's wearing anything? Look at the intro page for Clavius and Beyond.

Persephone also comes out of Larry Niven's "Known Space" series of books and short stories.

Yes, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy trilogy contains five books - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy; The Restaurant at the End of the Universe; Life, the Universe, and Everything; So Long and Thanks for All the Fish; Mostly Harmless - all of which radically contradict each other and themselves. ๐Ÿ™‚
