well, yes, i agree by all means that if youre also using javelins (a 0/15 weapon, 3.75/15 after the formula, 11.25/45 adjusted, 22.5/90 with two launchers) you already have the armor damage more than covered, so you should buy in a ratio much, much heavier with laser cannons.

For reasons already posted on this board, I am voting for Laser Cannons. I prefer Proton turrets, but the laser is the better cannon.

I can't believe that these two are tied...Although I voted for protons, I use laser cannons much more often.

Protons gain another vote...
I wish I had posted your post, asmodeatur I'm specialist of calculations For calculations reasons, I vote for the Laser Cannon. Proton: heavier, slower, slower recharge rate, only a bit more damage per shot for shields, and no ship has enough armor for the mass damage to be interesting.

All you proton fans should be ashamed...I can't believe how close this has been.
Let me push lasers ahead. Put my vote for lasers.

To my disbelief, laser cannons are now in the lead.
I think my votes for Laser Cannons and Missiles have a lot to do with mass. In the case of the cannons at least, Protons are a bit better, but the ships that need cannons to be effective don't have the mass for Protons. I do like Proton turrets better, because the ships that carry turrets all have he room for those.

I used to be a major suporter or Proton cannons but then looked at the space and said hell with it. Right now i fill up on laser cannons then proton then javalins. So LASERS!!!!!

I'm kinda surprised to see lasers in the lead here, didn't know there were so many other laser fans.
I agree with your sentiments abiut space, Tycho Maudd. Well said, I think.

Right on. I'm also surprised, very surprised in fact to see lasers take the lead by two. Protons have been considered a long-time favorite of Escape Velocity, but I guess less mass has always been attractive when it comes to outfits...
Lasers are only good for attacking the Alien cruiser. Otherwise, they stink, big time. Protons have much greater damage and it's worth it for the extra size.

Would someone please do a proper test here? Check up on the lasers shield advantage and average armour:shields ratio on ships? I think Carnotaur will be surprised...

Well, I checked for the Alien Cruiser, shields only.
Kestral: 3 Laser Turrets = 9 shots/sec 4 Laser Cannons = 6 shots/sec 10.5*15=157.5
3 Proton Turrets = 9 shots/sec 5 Proton Cannons = 5 shots/sec 12.5*14=175
Corvette:
2 Laser Turrets = 6 shots/sec 4 Laser Cannons = 6 shots/sec 10.5 damage shields/shot = 10.5*12=126
2 Proton Turrets = 6 shots/sec 5 Proton Cannons = 5 shots/sec 12.5 damage shields/shot = 12.5*11=137.5
Rapier: 4 Laser Cannons = 6 shots/sec 10.5*6=63
4 Proton Cannons = 4 shots/sec 12.5*4=50
Lightning:
4 Laser Cannons = 6 shots/sec 10.5*6=63
5 Proton Cannons = 5 shots/sec 12.5*5=62.5
So, on capital ships, Protons are more efficient against the Alien, because the Turrets fira at equal rate and tip scales. Lasers are a better choice on the Rapier, because it only holds 4 Cannons. They are also a tiny bit better on the Lightning, but .5 points/sec is hardly significant. Overall, I go with Protons against the alien.

Interesting statistics...Laser cannons are always better when used on fighters, but protons are a good choice for the capitals. But often, I take on the alien cruiser in a fighter, so laser cannons are necissary to save some room and tear through the shielding a bit more quickly.
Originally posted by Asmodaethur: **so you see lasers actually do much more damage (26% more damage in fact) to shields in the same time period. more damage is not the same as less damage, i am afraid (nothing personal) hee hee! **
Hee hee yourself.
Seriously: That is some nice reasoning, Asmodaethur. Very thoughtful. Very well done!

Wait a moment. Why on earth is someone reasoning that the proton is better, and isn't even making it a fair test, because they're saying "5 protons" to "4 lasers"? Isn't that a little unfair?
