Proton Turret vs. Laser Turret

Normally, I go with proton turrets all the way. Decent range and excellent damage rate make the weapon fit for use on any capital ship. But lately, I've found the laser turret to be an efficient weapon. Better range, at the cost of less damage rate. My Rebel Cruiser is maxed out with laser turrets, saving me forty tons of extra space I would normally be using for the proton turrets. I can still just as easilly destroy Confederation capital ships using laser turrets in a deadly spread. These turrets are also handy against large numbers of fighters...

Anyway, this is a poll for which turret you prefer. I'm going to go ahead and vote for the Laser Turret, though I would vote for protons on any other poll. Just state your vote and give us some reasons. πŸ™‚

proton turrets all the way.
I used to mix them to get range and damage but i dont end up using the extra space so protons turrets. A confed cruiser with four of them is deadly to any thing in seconds well worth the space.
reasons. the protons is just more destructive and even though the range is not as good the only ships that use laser turrets are small enough not to damage you any way so range isn't important thats what missiles ans torpedoes are for πŸ™‚

Wow, well said! I agree with you 100%...The only problem is that people often under-estimate laster turrets because only the middle-siized and smaller ships carry them. Since the weapon is never seen in stock throughout the game, people often don't see the potential of the weapon.

Anyhow, good reason. πŸ™‚

Laser Turrets.

Before I would have said Proton Turrets, but range is all. Range is one of the most important things to me in a battle situation - secondary weapons aren't an excuse for having a good range. Range in imperative, and it gives more advantage than you'd think. If you don't believe me, take a closer look at the Manta and Lightning in action.

My exact opinion as well. Speed and range will beat bulk and firepower anytime...

Oooohh...I'd have to say Proton Turrets. I never had much of a problem with the lack of range and my Proton Cannons seem to make up for that. Though the difference between the two turrets was never all that much to me.

The very definition of the word "special" means something out of the ordinary

Protons. They do a lot more damage, and the lower speed and range are so small as to be inconsequential. Note that I think there's nothing wrong with Lasers, and use them regularly in things like Corvettes and Argosies(In the now rare occasions I have one) to save space, but in a large warship that has the space, Proton's damage wins.

unlike the laser cannon vs proton cannon issue this one is much more clearcut (go read that thread if you don't know what im talking about okay???). hee hee πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰

laser turrets and proton turrets both have the same reload. laser turrets do 10 damage against shields, 0 against armor. proton turrets do 10 against shields, 10 against armor.

applying the armor damage = (AD + (SD/4)) and shield damage = (SD + (AD/4)) we get:

laser turret: 10 shield damage, 2.5 armor damage
proton turret: 12.5 shield damage, 12.5 armor damage.

so the proton turret is 25% more effective against shields, and 500% (!!! hee hee πŸ˜‰ ;)) more effective against armor. five hundred percent!!!

but wait, you say, being young and ignorant (hee hee πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰ just kidding hee hee πŸ˜‰ ;)).. what about the range? laser turrets have 235012823085 times more range than proton turrets, right??? nope!!! both types of shots have the same duration, but the lasers fire slightly faster (875 vs 850), giving them slightly greater total distance covered before they expire: a grand total of about 3%. maybe it is a little more because the lasers have a longer graphic and EV may be a bit lazy in its collision detection and mask checking (i'll ask matt sometime. hee hee πŸ˜‰ ;)), but i would say at most they have a 5-6% longer effective range. this really should not matter unless you are doing something very cheesy like monty pythoning all over the place because you have no skill and can not beat EVs simple AI without being super cheap. you aren't monty pythoning all over the place, are you? even if you are, 5% should not compensate for five hundred percent greater effectivness against armor that the protons would give you.

really the only thing that laser turrets have going for them is that they take up less space, but since they are soooo bad at killing armor, youd probably be better off buying, for instance, 2 proton turrets (60 tons) instead of 3 laser turrets (also 60 tons). you'd lose about 25% of your efficiency against shields, but gain 300% efficiency against armor, which is probably a worthwhile tradeoff even with EV's shield-heavy ships. plus, proton turrets are blue (i love blue hee hee πŸ˜‰ ;)) and do not have the yucky laser sound, so my vote goes to proton turrets!!!!!!!!!! hee hee πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰

Proton Turret, definately!

The only situation when I'd buy a laser turret would be if my ship can hold a second turret but has just between 20 and 29 tons of space left (after all other upgrades and secondaries I want to have).
