I seem to be unable to use the Plasma Dump outfit. I'm flying a Rebel Destroyer and was trying to use it to destroy the Replicons (on behalf of the Asteroid aliens). But it doesn't fire even when selected and targetted. I've tried in various star systems to no avail. Has anyone met this problem?
On a side note, I ended up using about 60 torpedoes for each(!) of the 3 Replicons. Next time I'll just carry a PT boat...

You might not have enough fuel. The plasma dump uses quite a bit of fuel.
PS-Wow. This is my 500th post (Not that it really matters).

Bingo! It uses exactly 5 jumps of fuel. I'd reduced my ship to just 3 jumps to get more weapons space since I have the Power reactor (which refuels 1 jump every 10 seconds or so). The plasma dump is very powerful for an unlimited ammo weapon - about 100 points' worth of damage. But that would still have been... 12 charges to kill those Replicons (60 torpedoes * 20 pts = 1200). Eek.
BTW why do some ships defend themselves even when the cloak is on? Most ships sit and get killed by my Lightnings (5 - one extra courtesy of the Asteroids) but others (like the Replicons grrr) defend themselves and blow my fighters up.
Anyone have an opinion on the various bays? I have a Lightning Bay, and I'm wondering if it's really as good as a Thrasher bay plus a Manta Bay. I tried 2 Thrasher Bays - still limited to 4 ships, although they launch 2 at a time. Ditto for Mantas - still 6 max. I wonder if 4 Lightnings will beat 6 Mantas + 4 Thrashers... probably not, eh? 4 Lightnings = 16 Missiles, 8 Heavy Rockets, 160 Javelins, 16 laser cannons. 6 Mantas (18 cannons, 12 Missiles) and 4 Thrashers (8 cannons, 12 Missiles, 300 Guided Javelins) total (26 cannons, 24 Missiles, 300 Guided Javelins). Right now I'm reluctant to switch because of my "bonus" Lightning. I guess I could keep the Lightnings and just sell the bay... or just buy all 3 bays grin. 14 (plus 1) fighters - woo hoo!

I'm assuming you're talking about special mission ships here, where you cloak and then your fighters can beat on the ships, because they sit there and do nothing. If so, it depends how the mission is set up. The special ships have a "ship behavior" field in the mission file. If they are set to "always attacks player", then they will attack only you and, if you cloak, sit there and die. If they are set to something else though, if you disappear, they will move and attack other hostile targets. This is probably the problem you're having. BTW, if you don't know this already, when dominating planets, the defense ships are set up to always attack you, so if you have fighters/escorts and cloak, they just sit there too. With an outfit that gives you a jump of fuel every 10 seconde, you could probably stay cloaked forever, and have a really easy time taking over planets.

Thanks - makes sense now. I guess I'll have to stop relying on my fighters all the time. Launching 50 torpedoes is more fun than worrying that the capital ship will kill off my fighters anyway. But having 6 Mantas, 4 Thrashers and 6 Lightnings (got an extra one) is a whole lot of fun. I think I'll go back and play as a Confederate captain now. Having a PT boat for a fighter sounds like interesting
As for the permanent cloaking, yeah, it pretty much lasts forever with the Power Reactor - many minutes, at least, but it's not really enough to defeat the 3000-strong Earth fleet - at least not quickly. I added the Defender bay, giving me (6 mantas + 4 Thrashers + 6 Lightnings + 8 Defenders = 24 ships) but Earth's defense fleet has lots of platforms, which take forever to destroy even with my fleet. I don't have so much patience.

I was just answering from a technical standpoint - I've never played Galactic Scourge, just understand the engine pretty well. Should be more than enough time under cloak to dominate most places though. And I envy your 24 fighters - I really like using them, but don't have any plugs or anything that allow that many.

GS is a pretty good plug, and it allows Bays for Defender, Manta, Thrasher (slightly better than Manta), Lightning, Flea (like Defender but faster), Patrol Ship, Gunboat and PT Boat (gunboat with torpedoes). They weigh 25-65 tons, so a Rebel Destroyer can carry several different bays if you sell most of the OEM gear. Ditto for the Kestrel, Rebel Cruiser and freighters with mass expansions.
Pale is another plug that allows fighter bays - some (non-Kestrel) ships carry fighters already - the Wight has 6 Rapiers(!). And I know the Lightning Bay (4 Lightnings) exists, so you'd have at least 10 fighters this way.
In any case I find that fighters are fun, but ultimately better suited to mission objectives (kill X) than general piracy (when you want to disable and not destroy ships).
just use your cannons/turrets. I only use my primaries. I can take on many ships only using guns.

You forgot the DDT fighter bay (holds six), the PT boat dock (holds one), and the DDT destroyer dock (holds one).
