Moments of Pride and Accomplishment

I thought about starting my own thread, "Woe, Dispair & Agony," but I didn't want to have a thread for just whinning. Anyway, here goes....

From my previous posts you know that I have had rotten luck on the Astrodyne V (weapons prototype) mission. After zillions of visits to Palshife I finally got it again. Armed with El Guapo's strategic advice (Thanks, ElG7. I even practiced on some Transports around Capella -- to be sure I was ready.) I headed off to finally complete this crazy mission.

On arriving at Sauron I 'released from servitude' my Argosy escorts (to reduce my fleet's attraction to pirates). My Destroyer was ready....

I jumped into ****** and ... there he was! No pirates. Just Mr. Transport, a (harmless)
Rebel Cruiser/with Mantas ... and me. I had him targeted and...

"What the ...!?"

The Mantas pounced on the Transport and wasted him!

"Mission Failed."

That is the fifth or sixth time I have failed to complete this mission. (I have dreams about this nutty mission.

I hate this game....

Let's see what this button does....

I remember I was really happy when I first accomplished that §/%&ed; up mission in Pale. You know, the one where there's around 20 Rebel cruisers you have to kill...in a kestrel (or similar). Now I just capture a wight, head to Evildrome, and use the Mt/D turrets to waste 'em. 😄

Here's my story:

I was working on the clavius missions, and i finally found the system where the 'clavius hammer' mission takes place (through some wierd problem w/ my computer, i had been carrying it around for a while before doing the pre-requisites). Anyways, my trusty Firestorm had taken out a few fleets in the past, so i hyper in, assuming i would get a quick victory. Man, was i wrong!

I was greeted by a bunch of those things that look vaguely like phantoms (they say "warning, pi-meson particles detected" on the targeting screen), a 'few' NPPK stalkers, and a bunch of atroposes (or atomoses, i'm not sure which). Anyways, i go after an atomos, since i had flown one and knew how to kill em'. As i begin my flybys on the big pack of fighters, the stalkers broadside me with nuclear rockets. OUCH! Back at virgo, i try again, hoping they couldn't salvage anything from the wreckage of my previous attempt (sorry, not on strict here). When i return, i resolve to pay better attention to my radar display. Unfortunately, the stupid nebula interference kicked in. Same bad station, same bad channel.

I return to the system for a third time, very, very angry. The first thing i do is kill those blasted stalkers. At one neutronic torp each, and 62 neutronic torps on my kestrel, i make short work of the sorry ships. I move on to the atomoses. Realizing that they have neutronic torps, but aren't smart enough to use them, i hit them w/ one torp each, disabling them and letting my turrets destroy them.

At last, i move on to the wierd pi-meson ships. Assuming they are similar to phantoms, i begin spearing them (a term from and EVO discussion-you rush at them, making one pass each time, and back off to let your shields recharge before your next dash through). Unfortunately, they seem to have nasty blue things. The particle beams stop me in my tracks, so i reverse course and hit the afterburners to get my sorry golden behind out of that withering fire. As i return, i use a different tactic. I separate one from the group, and go head-to-head. One on one, the particle beam doesn't deal that much. Unfortunately, i'm down to my armor again (I think i was taking missile hits around here too). I back off to dodge the missiles and let my shields recharge.

Anyways, i eventually kill them all and land on epsilon. I'm informed that i have to go get an extremely unstable bomb from virgo. Taking off, i'm attacked by a pair of NPPK destroyers, or something similar. I quickly dispatch their stalkers, but am horrified when these white orbs come in and begin to smash me to pieces. When i launch from the moon, after loading my file again, i take the stalkers out and dodge the plasma balls. Spinning around the destroyers, i begin to take their shields down with my superior-ranged neutronic turrets. Eventually one is destroyed, and i try flybys again. Oops! I take off one last time, and just keep circling. I finally go to virgo, and get the bomb. On taking off, i brace myself for another desparate fight to the hyper point (the mission briefing told me that dogfights were, well 'inadvisable', to say the least, when i was carrying the bomb).

Much to my delight, i find that there are no hostiles. Maybe i wasn't supposed to kill the destroyers, and they were supposed to follow me around, i thought, but i sure didn't complain. Anyway, i return to Epsilon and plant the bomb. Once i return to clavius, i see all these nifty escort neutronic kestrels just waiting in the system for me, and that made it all worth while. Well, that and the money :).

I have no exciting stories i just lose some and win most of 'em. well one of the coolest fights i was in was with the artemis group when you have to destroy a whole fleet of kestrels. i wasted 'em all with my 'vette( and i only used my guns no secondaries)and of course the guys that are supposed to help you blew up in a few seconds. and once i got to competent in a shuttlecraft. and on evo i got to deadly in a shuttle(like a shuttlecraft but it looks a little cooler. 🙂

Well, I don't have any really memorable battles, but I do remember all of my tactics. I'll just insert them into a random battle I probably got into over a hundred times.

I've always liked corvettes. They have the best combo of speed, armor, maneuverability and firepower that you can find. Add on a few engine upgrades, a shield capacitor or two, some durasteel, take away the heavy rocket and javelin launchers (I never liked to use them anyway. Too clumsy) and replace the laser turrets with proton turrets. Then just add on a missile jammer and a full array of torpedoes and missiles. Now that's a ship!

So anyway, I always had a penchant for pissing off confeds. On my starmap, the whole center of the galaxy was a series of red dots. And what happened was that one day, in the spaceport bar, I was called over by some guy wanting me to run guns to the other side of the galaxy for an exceptionally large paycheck. The problem was the time limit. It was too small a gap for me to simply go around all the confed systems. So then I decided to go straight through, avoiding complications with the confeds by running. But, when I needed to stop for fuel (you'll notice that I forgot to add on ramjets or extra fuel tanks up there), there were two confederate frigates in system. So, I decided to take them. I don't remember where the system was, but there was a mild asteroid belt, for which I'm thankful. I fired off a full volley of torps at the lead frigate, while running away at full speed. About four of them hit the shields through the asteroids, and I was trying to dodge his torps by losing them in the asteroids. Then, I moved in with my turrets, taking down the shields on the first frigate by a significant amount. By the time he was disabled, I started to pay attention to the other guy. He just let off a whole string of torps, and I in turn took off damn quick. I went as fast as I could, but still the torps gained on me, so I started to angle my flight. Everytime the torps got too close, I turned a few degrees so that they'd have to turn as well. Their turning time wasn't as good as mine, so I was able to run them around until they detonated on their own. Then I came back within sight range of the other frigate. I let off a whole string of torpedoes and missiles, because i saw that there were no asteroids betweeen us. Then I fired off my turrets, strafing it's hull until it's shields were well below fifty. But, by then my shields weren't in the best shape either, and I took a quick hike out of there to recharge and regroup. Now, I don't know about everyone, but sometimes I can tell when the asteroids are open, even off the screen. Maybe I just see an opening when I go by, but this 'sense' usually works, and I use it as much as possible. So, after I let off another spread of torps and missiles, I moved in again with turrets. For the last couple of points it was pretty even, until I turned my ship around and started to pump missiles into its hull. Soon enough, it was dead, and I boarded it for fuel and anything else I could salvage. After plundering both ships, I had enough fuel to continue my journey to a more friendly system.

And there it is. Not much, I know, but hey, I take my pride where I can.

Okay, here I am in my highly modified Corvette (that I only gave up for a Rebel Destroyer). Anyway, I decided to take over a planet because I thought it would be fun. I also decided to go for Pegasus because a) it was independant and therefore easy, and 🆒 they hated me anyway. 😄

So, I demand tribute, and out pop 6 little defenders. I think to myself, "That's it?" and try the Monty Python (because that's what I always do). First I tried shooting them down with torpedoes because I knew that one hit from one of those will send it flying in a fury of flames! The problem was that they had to be directly behind me, or the torps wouldn't curve fast enough. But once I got rid of them (I wasted about half of my arsenel just trying to hit the fast little buggers), I realized that there were more!

So I figured I'd save what was left of my torps and go head to head with my proton torpedoes. Mistake. Those little guys can do some major damage in groups! Anyway, on the third or fourth try (I decided to take them down with a huge store of missles instead of torpedoes) I destroyed them! 😄 Then came the bounty hunters...

Hehe...I use to always go around and take over independent planets in my kestrel. Though the defenders are terrible wimps, they can cause damage in groups (like you said). But being able to take a planet in a corvette? That's rather impressive...

Whitehawk sat listening to the tales and mubles a few inaudible things. Taking a sip from his drink, he pulled a pad from one the crates and put it down on his table. Finishing off his drink, he picked it up again and said, “Very good stories, people. You’ve many experiences up your sleeves. Let me share with you a story of my own. This one comes from EVGE. It is one of my lesser ones but entertaining nonetheless. I call it ‘Encouter at Misha”

I’m one of daring risks, true. I’ve taken on some of the Confederation’s more challenging ships with many a Baseship fleet no more then debris and wreakage. I’ve done a good many things in my time, proving a major thorn in the Confeds’ side. I’ve had many a daydream about pounding torpedos into their ships’ hulls. But it soon grew to boring. I hunted pirates for a short while, raking in major cash. Yet that to soon grew to bothersome.

Then I came upon my next quest: bounty hunting. Not just hunting pirates or other rouges, but aliens. Sure I helped the alien race to retake their technology, I mearly did so to show off the Confederation. After my clash with the alien gateway years ago when I worked for the Polaris Alliance, I knew that there were many alien ships within human space that proved a major threat. About two years after helping the Aliens and reciveing as a reward uncharted jump holes, I decided to hunt these down these deadly beings and make a profit at all the while. I still remember my first encounter in the first months of my career.

I have flown in my Puma Destroyer Falcon for years, having modified it from its original confines. It was a deadly foe in combat, and it held onboard a few familes amongst the crew. It’s shield grids were fully upgraded, it held two armor layers, armaplast and durasteel and it held torpedos, missiles, and four deadly plasma turrets. Aside from being equipped with standard outfits, like an afterburner and such, it also held a fuel replicator, which proved far superior to a ramscoop. It also held many other gadgets as well.

It was agreed upon by myself and my senior officers that the Aliens should be hunted down. We needed to track down as many as possible and destroy them. Our first challenge was at Misha in which we had to fight to the very point of our lives.

I had recived a hot tip from a Leathean merchant a few systems before that an Alien ship had been plaguing the routes leading into the Proxmian Tip, which held Carigh Prime and Alpha Proxmia and was destroying everything in sight. I took upon this chance and decided to hunt it down. We had just though it would be an old battlecrusier. This thought had nearly cost me my ship and crew.

We jumped into the system on May 4th, 2258, ready to battle this threat. I had to make sure my ship was top notched and in working order. Little did we know what we were to encounter. At first, sensors picked up nothing beyond normal nosie, but as time passed, we sensed a massive hyperspace disortion. We thought it nothing more then perhaps a fleet; but we were dead wrong. It was the Alien ship, but it was no battlecrusier.

Now I’ve fought many cruisers and even an Annihilator before, but I’ve never encountered something as big as this ship. It was a Alien Command Crusier, the most powerful ship the Aliens had. I’ve encountered them before yes, but at a safe distance and I always jumped when they appeared. They carried a quad of battlecrusiers and a few fighters as well, and were heavily armed. It was to late to jump into hyperspace, for it was upon us. The ACC launched its crusiers and fighters and we were running on full afterburners. I’ve many battles under my belt, claiming a record of downing twelve fighters in a single pass, but alien fighters were to much a macth for me.

If hadn’t been for the mines aboard my ship, I don’t know what wouldv’e happened. I unloaded all the mines and sent them hurtling back towards the fighters and battlecrusiers. It took what seemed like hours to blow up the last one, when it was only twelve minutes. I then headed for the closest remaing battlecrusier, which had its weapons’ grid fully armed. Alein missles hit my ship, dropping my shields with each passing minute and its beam weapon seared my ship’s hull. Plasma fire pelted at the strong shields of the crusier as torpedos fired from their launchers. The Falcon is a strong ship, built by some of the best ship designers in the galaxy, but she cannot hold up against such puinishment for long. I ordered reverse thrust and fired weapons.

Then in a stroke of brillant luck, something amazing happened. I had gotten to close to the ACC in the battle with its crusier and it fired its most powerful weapon, its beam weapon. As sensors picked it powering up, I ordered my ship into a nose dive, barely avoiding the weapon. Unfourtanely for the crusier, it caught the brunt force of it and its core or whatever it used for hypertravel, exploding in a brillant blaze of fire. The force of the explosion threw the Falcon into a spin. When we finally managed to stop, the ACC was on top of us. Seeker drones pounded my ship’s hull and we were forced to lesser Alien energy weapons fire. Bursts of plasma and torpedo after torpedo followed as we strafted the ship, trying in vain to disable it; this went on for hours. We had one mine left, but we were to close to use it.

We had been battling for seven hours and my crew was weary and tired. I considered withdrawing when I saw my chance. At another barrage of plasma fire, the shields of the ACC dropped and I ordered the mine to be launched. We were still close enough to take damage and the Falcon’s hull was damaged while the shields were at 25%. It was our only chance though and we took it. The force shook the ship as the mine connected with the enemy, sending us flying back with great force. When we finally managed to stop, we saw the ACC disabled and badly damaged.

We had come this far, so we decided to finish it. I ordered us to dock, intending on taking any alien technology possible. We boarded and drilled a hole into the drone launchers, taking nearly two thousand seeker drones with us. We disengaged, not daring to board the rest of the ship, for it was rumored to hold thousands of aliens, who were deadlier then humans.

We intended to tractor it back with us, but we knew it would be too risky. We set small energy mines along the organic hull and fired a burst of plasma fire followed by a torpedo. The ship exploded, damaging the Falcon even further, but as it was our first success, it was a joyus sight. We had proven ourselves capable alien bounty hunters, and it would prove the most significant of them all.

Three days later we limped into Proxmia Defender’s docking bay, barely running on auxiliary power. We had to be tractored in the rest of the way to avoid a jam in system traffic. The Falcon was badly damaged and beyond repair. The hull was scorched and blasted and was buckling in some parts. The shield matrix was fried and couldn’t be salvaged. It was time to sell the ship, which I had called home for years now. I now had a difficult choice to make; let my crew go to live their lives or buy a new ship. But even if I could make it back to Alliance space, it would take at least a month by even shuttle. I had nearly three hundred people to think about. At what would be the last briefing onboard the Falcon, all senior officers discussed this.

There were no ship that could macth a Puma Destroyer in combat when it came to its category. I had to make the most difficult decsion in my life, one many captains rather not face; letting many of my crew go. In my earlier years, I had helped Proxmia track down a criminal who had stolen some of their technology and as a reward, I was given rights to buy their military ships. I raked in nearly thirty million from selling what was left of the Falcon. Within my reach was a Bird of Prey, one of the most technologically advanced ships of human design.

Sadly I bought it, but it could only fit a crew of one hundred fifty crew members. I let most of my crew go, with full pay for the month and watched as they left, going on with their lives. My senior officers stayed behind, whether out of guilt or loyalty I do not know. But in the years to come, we saw many battles and glory fighting our new enemy, even to be as bold as to raid Maia itself.

Whitehawk sat back and ordered another drink, adding to the growing empty glasses. “Now if any of you people got some tales, I’m all ears.”
