The situation: In standard EV, I have a confed cruiser. I want to assemble a fleet of escorts consisting of 6 rebel and confed cruisers -- The Fleet of DOOM!.
I would like to do this with a reasonable amout of time and effort. I am not the kind of player to spend 6 hours trying to kill the alien cruiser with a clipper. I would rather spend 4 hours getting a corvette/kestrel and kill it in 10 minutes.
The capture odds for cruiser class ships is very low, so building The Fleet by capturing other cruisers is out (unless there is some cheat/hack to improve the odds).
The only other way I can see to build The Fleet is to capture a small ship such as an argosy, and use it as my ship. My cruiser becomes an escort. Then purchase another cruiser. This is horribly expensive, and money is scarce in standard EV. I would have to dominate half the galaxy to have enough cash for this. By the time I had The Fleet, I would not need it!
I've seen people on this board brag about their huge fleet dominating planets effortlessly. How did you build your fleet?
------------------
To Make Fleet of Doom: You will need: - One large egg - Two tablespoons of butter - Either Cheat II or EV edit.
Mix ingredients in one universe (fairly large) and pour into a medium sized oven. Leave for 40 minutes or when Fleet of Doom is golden brown and crunchy. (Serves 4)
Seriously though, you could use cheat II to give yourself a lot of cash to do the second option OR get a few kestrel escorts to give you extra taking over power, this will take ages and more cash though so your best bet is to use EV edit to change the cruisers crew to one, buy a kestrel and take over cruisers with the help of your former ship, the cruiser.
However, capturing the universe is boring and can be adverse to your health. Think of the monotony of standing over a planet blasting defenders again and again, or the dissapointment as you fail once again to capture earth.
My advice: Become a Pirate...

I used EVedit a few times, and ev´ry time my plug got damaged.I also heard some voices on these boards confirming the thesis that EVe is full of bugs.

True. But you can accomplish the same sort of cheat safely with ResEdit. However, I feel that it will seriously downgrade your enjoyment of EV to monkey around with the the game mechanics.

basicaly, yes, the best way is to capture a small ship and use it as your ship. getting enough cash to buy new cruisers isnt really as daunting as it seems -- there are a lot of independent planets that you can capture without a fleet, which will give you a steady income. then you can go capture a fleet of bulk freighters and trade for a while. you can become very rich very quickly with 3000 cargo space and a steady income from dominated planets.
note however that the 'fleet of doom' really wont help you that much in combat. even with bulk freighters, they are probably more effort to get than they are worth, so if your goal is to conquer the whole galaxy you might want to just start doing it and not take the time to gather a fleet of doom first. on the other hand if you just want the fleet for its own sake, go for it.
(Edit: hee hee i typed bulk cruisers instead of bulk freighters silly me hee hee ;))

With a confed cruiser, the way I might go about getting this "Fleet of DOOM" is to capture a bunch of destroyers/frigates, whose capture percentages are much higher. These escorts would add to my capture %, so once I got 5 of these lower ones, I'd go for a cruiser. Then, I'd release a frigate/destroyer, and repeat until I had 6 cruisers.
------------------ If I write a letter to be put in a time capsule to be opened when time travel is possible, and if in my letter I ask for some item to be sent back in time to the point I sealed my time capsule, wouldn't that item appear just as I seal the capsule? Just a thought...

So escorts add to capture %? Just how is capture % computed anyway?

That's exactly how I assembled my FLEET OF DOOM! I now have, as my ship, a Canfed Cruiser, along with 3 Confed Cruiser escorts, 2 Rebel cruiser Escorts, and 1 Rebel Destroyer escort.
And, y'know, a FLEET OF DOOM takes all the fun out of the game. Once you're invincible, you just get bored, bored, bored.

Yea, the fleet makes it dull...unless you attack MB. He is a tough cookie to break. I captured 6 Confed Cruisers with my Confed Cruiser. Took some time but it was worth it. Beating Earth is a future priority but pounding indeps is much funner.
Are you gonna tell him that's a boy cow? Naw, he'll figure it out.
i started capturing planets when i got a Krestel. once you captured about 15 planets (pretty easy) you could continuesly land and depart from the planet, a day passes every time you land. in no time you will have a pretty hefty amount of money. that solves the money issue. now with millions of credits you can buy, attack, steal any type of ship. i continued capturing planets and now in about 3 jumps i can get 1 million credits
