I made a plug with a ship that ISN'T a cheating ship - quite.
It can beat Matt Burch easily, though.
It has a beam weapon about the strength of 5 proton cannons, with a range higher than any other normal weapon in the game, and it doubles up as a tractor beam.
Add a few other bits and bobs, and it will, after about 8 years continous gameplay, beat Matt Burch.
The ship, by the way, is a fighter called the Eclipse - 20 tons weapon space free, 5 tons cargo space, and a weak fuel sucking launcher that fires these tiny super accurate pods that fire super fast. Cost is 10 million credits + extremely hard missions completed. Not cheating, is it?
(Although, the ship that carries it, the 30m credit Orion, is)

Run from your attacker, being sure to reach a speed that makes him "track" you (rather than a speed where he can circle you and still keep pace with your flight)
Decrease your speed a "touch" -- so the Bogie begins to overtake you
If you adjusted correctly, the Bogie will creep just into your range so you can
Spin your ship so you are flying backwards and ... blast away at him
"Most of the time" you will be out of his range, while he is flying right into your fire. Works great on Kestrels, Lightnings, Clippers, Gun Boats and Patrol Ships. Many times with Rapiers. I don't have the patience to try to "pace" the flight of Frigates and Cruisers. I use other tactics on them....
Good hunting!

Hey, that's actually my main strategy in the game! I guess great minds think alike.
Doesn't work all the time. Use a team up method to take down the alien cruiserand planetary defenses are a choice of your own. I use the monty unless they pack a lot of punches (ex-torps). Torps piss me off because there is no avoiding all of them. Expecially when trying to overtake Sirgil Starport. BTW, does anybody know how many destroyers defend that damnable station?
